For those latecomers to AMC's "Mad Men," frantically trying to catch up with the DVDs before the series starts up again on Sunday, here's the skinny on the theme song. It's an edited version of RJD2's "A Beautiful Mine." The song in its entirety is above; the credits over which it plays are below.
Volume 1 of "Mad Men: Music from The Television Series" came out in June, and it includes music by Ella, Vic Damone, Bobby Vinton. Like the show, it's swell, swanky stuff. It's available on iTunes.

Here's a bit of trivia for you. The opening string-orchestra-theme music from "Mad Men" (A Beautiful Mine) is actually stolen from the first six bars of the introduction to an arrangement by Enoch Light (of Enoch Light and the Light Brigade) of "Autumn Leaves" (Project3Records, PRD 5109, issued in 1992 on CD, probably recorded circa 1970, discontinued now, "The Most Beautiful Music in the World". RJD2 super-imposed the heavy Latin/Rock percussion track over the original string-orchestra arrangement by Enoch Light.
