'Billboard' Hot 100: 50 years of hits, misses
And we loved them: The boys from Liverpool have penthouse suites in the Billboard "Hot 100" lists.
Billboard is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its weekly Hot 100, which was born the same year as Madonna and Michael Jackson, who are familiar with its rankings. At the magazine's Web site, you can find a bunch of lists that rank artists by most appearances and other standards.
According to the magazine, "The Hot 100 was the first list to measure popularity by incorporating both radio play and sales. Scoring the chart's inaugural No. 1 was Ricky Nelson with 'Poor Little Fool.' " I'm not sure what it means today in the great scheme of things, but for a long time it reflected what was popular in our mainstream music culture. Check out the differences in these categories. Prince turned 50 this year, too, but he's nowhere to be found (but Usher, Whitney Houston and Boyz II Men are) :
- Most appearances: Elvis (108), James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, the Beatles, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, the Rolling Stones, Marvin Gaye, Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons and Dionne Warwick.
- Most No. 1s: The Beatles (20), Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, Madonna, the Supremes, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Stevie Wonder, the Bee Gees, Elton John, Paul McCartney/Wings, the Rolling Stones, Usher.
- Most weeks at No. 1: Mariah Carey (79), the Beatles, Boyz II Men, Usher, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Janet Jackson, Beyonce, Madonna, Whitney Houston, Paul McCartney/Wings.
