indie snob

the review is obviously well-informed and from a (early) metallica fan. Pitchfork covers (indie) heavy metal and heavy music - see the Show No Mercy Columns. Metal bands routinely make their "Best New Music" and "Recommended" lists, although they are usually indie metal bands like Mastodon, Opeth, etc. i understand that people like to diss Pfork for being snarky or unfair, but it seems to me they are spot-on a lot of the time. Rolling Stone lost its way in about 1983.

I haven't heard enough of the album to agree or disagree with the review. But you make a good point; so I should clarify: Metallica is also mainstream, which is the bigger sin in P'forkland.

Pitchfork gives anything that's on the radio a lackluster review. If it ain't "dance punk" or "freak/neo folk", then the elite hipsters at Pitchfork get butthurt and give it a completely random low review. A 4.9 review is like a 4/5 from Rolling Stone. Oh, wait a minute...
