Get Up Kids reunion: Sunday night
The band wanted this embargoed until late Thursday, but the rumors are all over the place and some are wrong. Here's the deal: The show is Sunday night -- this one, Nov. 16 -- at Record Bar, 1020 Westport Road. Chris Tolle will open at 8 p.m. It's an 18-and-older show. Cover is $10. Matt Pryor gives us some insight into the reunion:
Above: The Kids eschew the brick-wall portrait for something agri-urban casual: powerlines, chain-link fence and cirrus clouds.
"Next year is the 10th anniversary of our second record, 'Something to Write Home About,' which was our most popular record. We talked to Vagrant about doing a 10-year anniversary edition with a DVD and a photo book and all that stuff. Then we thought, 'Hey, we should play some shows.' This summer we got everybody on-board. Then we basically told a bunch of people about it and then denied it, just to be contrary.
"We weren't going to do it until next year, but we decided it'd be funny if we just showed up and played a show. We thought about doing it Thanksgiving, like, 'Hey, we all happen to be home for Thanksgiving ...,' but that didn't work out."
It'll be their first show since July 2005. There have been rumors of a reunion for months; we first heard about it this summer (Jim Suptic mentioned something vague and speculative when I ran into him at the Tom Petty show in July; Ryan Pope confirmed a little more at the Springsteen show in August). Anyway, the music Web site Strangeglue is reading T-shirts like tea leaves and forseeing something more than one show.

:D

They're FIRST show since July, 2005? That's been OVER three years now .....oh, THE HUMANITY OF IT ALL!!

Hey, Bubba: Give us a clue. Tell us what you like so we can ridicule your favorite bands.

Sounds like a fun warm up show albeit a tight squeeze. Any plans for them to play a tad larger venue like the Beaumont or Uptown again?

Wow. Tiny venue. Good stuff. I'm a bit older and don't know much about their music, but their fans are everywhere around this town.
Speaking of... Tim, what happened to the Fall Paw shows? I knew this was sketchy to begin with, but after Waka it seemed like something was really coming together.

Tim, I never said anything negative about the GET UP KIDS - I was merely pointing out that three years isn't very long to have to await a reunion. Forgot about the fact they're a local band. Artists I like, too many to mention but here are a few: POLICE, VAN HALEN, DEF LEPPARD, ZEPPELIN, BLACK SABBATH, THE CULT and NIRVANA. Ridicule away!

See you at the Cult, then.

Bubba, dude, there's been some really good music made the past 20 years or so. Local, national, worldwide or galactic - popularity does not really say all that much about a band's talent.

Here, in KC, they're local boys.

I went to the GET UP KIDS My Space last night and I thought their music was okay - but it DID note however they're from Kansas City. Was it possibly a fan assembled site? No, Tim Finn - doubt I'll be at THE CULT this Saturday - don't personally care for the Ameristar- the staff there act TOO dog gone corporate for me. Either way, only way I'd go is if I got a free ticket. Might show up at the Uptown this Friday for RISE AGAINST. Never saw them before. EVERYONE: thanks for the feed back. You all have a great evening.

Get Up Kids are from Kansas City, I believe a couple of them went to my old high school, Olathe South.

Hey, Mankvill - just wanted to say that I really like your site + the way you usually get a review and a gig's set list up within 24 hours from the time the show takes place. Only thing you could maybe use is photos from the concerts you review - IF they allow them. Most shows at the Beaumont or Uptown allow them. Lately, most shows at the Sprint Center ban EVEN disposables. What's up with that? Anyone make COLDPLAY tonight? I saw them three years ago at Verizon - their show was awesome! First song had a giant digital clock-like backdrop! Whoa!

Bubba -
I just got back from the Coldplay show and it was very impressive. They love to use lasers in their show, and seeing as I love lasers, the die-hard rave kid in me was excited. There were rotating globes above the stage and at the opposite end. The cameras that were recording the band for the jumbo screens were also projecting the images onto the globes. That was a pretty neat piece of work, I thought.
I had never gone to the Sprint Center before this show. Chairs in the floor area - dumb idea! I have never been to a concert that has chairs on the floor directly in front of the band. It has been standing only and I much prefer that way. One of the servers told me that Sprint Center uses those folding chairs for most of their shows. I would seriously consider not going to a show at that venue for that reason, among others. I haven't been to shows at other arenas in KC yet, but having those chairs down there just does not make sense to me.
As for cameras at the Sprint Center - I saw many there. I don't know if the people snuck their cameras in their coats. I wish I'd had that idea. Instead all I have for memories are crappy cell phone pictures!

Hello, Karisa - thanks for the after show feedback on COLDPLAY. As for sneaking in cameras, you CAN likely get away with it - but at the recent METALLICA concert, I decided simply NOT to even mess with it BECAUSE of the band's ban. NOTHING to do with request for Lars and the guys. I just didn't THINK I could likely get THAT close to the stage - I simply didn't PUSH it. Obviously, if you're a decent looking female with a beer, people may ALLOW to to 'scrunch' into their rows on the lower lever CLOSE to the floor (so I heard). If a fan pay$ a hefty ticket price, they SHOULD be openly permitted to take pics with small digitals or disposables. Some bands have 'sort of' given up on banning small cameras - some venues have as well - NOT officially but some DO relax a bit on jumping every patron they catch taking pics. As for the Sprint Center, I like having a seat on the floor.

yeaah, saravanan is right..
The Get Up Kids are known in a lot of places. I dunno If in the hole world. But here in Mexico we love them.. And I'd love to see them on stage. That would be so cool!

Shoot, can't believe I missed it, didn't hear about it until tonight, and I've had my ear to the ground over the past month, even emailed Ryan who emailed me back "keep an eye out for an announcement over the next month or so." If anyone went, please post the set list or email me directly at Dan9317@yahoo.com. Thx.

I know this thread is kinda old now but I just wanted to say I'm from Manchester (UK) and TGUK are one of my favourite bands. Unfortunately I got into em just after their last UK show so heres hoping they tour here too.
Did see Matt Pryor with the New Ams not long ago though n he play a few songs off Something to Write Home About
