Per Afentra this morning. Vedera cancelled. They rolled their van coming into KC last night. Sounds like a few of the band members are a little bruised and shaken up.

Would like to see Gaslight Anthem of that bunch but do they really need as much down time between sets as the actual sets themselves? Seems like they could have shortened those set changes up some and had those early acts play more than 20-30 minutes. I hate these types of radio-promo shows but for $20 I guess it's still a decent enough value.

I don't know who to contact, but pollstar has the Eagles down as playing another concert at the Sprint Center in March. So, someone working this website should look into that.

Hope Vedera is OK. They're really the only band I wanted to see. Hopefully they reschedule soon.

Yeah, I heard the radio ad for the EAGLES concert at the Sprint Center - on the Blvd (KY's lame-o replacement) - the one that plays WAY too much STEELY DAN, just this morning. EAGLES I think are supposed to return on Saturday, March 28. That dang Boulevard - a few nights ago, they played a full CD by DAN member DONALD FAGEN - A-U-G-H!! Hope the 'Buzz Stole Christmas' gig was good. The newly remodeled Midland is nice.

If it was "The Nightfly", you've got nothing to complain about.
Posted by: Bryan | December 10, 2008 at 11:21 PM
Bryan, so it was DONALD FAGEN'S 'Nightfly' album. I have others that'll back me up on this but STEELY DAN is WAY-over played and way over-rated. Saw it noted in an early '80's Creem magazine that they've always mostly been NOTED for what they've been ABLE to get by with. Guess it's all in the beholder. The Boulevard is okay, sometimes I guess but it's almost as if STEELY DAN pays them extra to play their $ong$.

First off, Steely Dan was always a more 'literate' Rock band and if they are not your thing, that's cool. I always liked them as I think Fagen is a better lyricist than 90% of anything to come from the Classic Rock era....and "The Nightfly" is brilliant from start to finish, but to each his own. As for the BOULEVARD being KY's "lame" replacement, I like them MUCH better now that they actually have a broader playlist and don't play the same 6 songs all day long. KY was a dinosaur that stuck around long after it's usefulness.
As for the Midland's "remodeling," the only thing I saw different (I was there for Willie Nelson and Billy Bob Thornton on Thanksgiving eve) is the silly standing-room-only bar at the top of the theater, which has got to be the absolute worst place to view a show. I love the Midland and went there when it was still a movie theater, but I don't see much difference from when I saw INXS there a couple of years ago before the changes were made.....now when they will finally open the Empire theater back up for movies (construction is WAY behind), I'll be first in line.

It's funny because I hated Steely Dan for the longest time growing up. I worked at the Milgrams in Brookside and heard some of those songs incessantly and immediately associated them with Adult Contemporary soft rock. It was only as I got older that I appreciated both their lyrical abilities and the strength of their arrangements. I'm still sick of some of their songs but "Reelin in the Years" and "Brooklyn"...give them a spin on the turntable with some big old headphones.
Steely Dan are certainly a band that is celebrated by musicians and people who, self-describingly, "get" music. I can see how they can get on people's nerves. Arguing about music is so frustrating yet it's all I like to do.
Posted by: Bryan | December 11, 2008 at 10:30 AM
sad that people in this town are still debating the merits of steely dan. No wonder we have no music scene to speak of.
Posted by: pete | December 11, 2008 at 01:54 PM
Nope, Pete. The reason we have no real music scene in KC is that inferior bands like the god-awful BEAUTIFUL BODIES and the fey REPUBLIC TIGERS get more press than bands that are actually good...too bad there aren't all that many of those in this town these days (and I've seen my share of local shows). Steely Dan has nothing to do with THAT!
Posted by: Say wha?? | December 11, 2008 at 02:22 PM
would you rather us talk about Jack's Mannequin?
I'll tell you who I am excited about: The Gaslight Anthem...they seem like the real deal.
What would you like to talk about Pete?
Posted by: Bryan | December 11, 2008 at 02:29 PM
fey? Hardly. Their show at the Voodoo Lounge last May was one of the top 5 of the year.

From what I saw and couldn't hear during Wednesday night's Buzz show, my impression is the 'renovation' of The Midland was a colossal waste of $$. Does removing permament-seating and replacing it with portable conference-style chairs really count as a renovation?
And please introduce me to the genius who dreamed up the idea for The Chandalier Bar and standing-room-only area at the top of the theater for a venue that - because of the 'renovation' - is now supposed to be a regular concert venue. The acoustics in that portion of the theater were absolutely horrible Wednesday night - you couldn't make out any of the dialogue that the stage performers were trying to carry on with the audience - and receiving any of the vocals in that part of the building was a complete nullity. The vocals in the part of the building sounded like the school teacher's voice from the old "Peanuts' holiday cartoons. The next time I call the box office for concert tickets at the Midland and am told the only remaining tickets are in the Chadalier Bar area, I'm going to take a pass on the show.
On a more positive note, the music and vocals were crystal-clear when, out of frustration, we ventured up to the very front edge of the main balcony level and stood there for the rest of the show.
Since I could see them but couldn't hear much, can anyone who was that the Buzz show tell me how good (or bad) the performaces were by Gaslight Anthem and Eagles of Death Metal?

Say Wha?? and Bryan:
There have been plenty of great Kansas City bands over the last 15 years to go out and enjoy live...but Kansas City just hasn't been able to get off it's collective ass and go out and support local music.
Sadly, this lack of interest by Kansas Citians (who I can only assume must be staying at home discussing the merits of 70s-era bands like Toto and Steely Dan and listening to 101 the Fox) has meant these bands have had to must go elsewhere to gain any kind of exposure. Thus, the lack of any lasting local music scene.
Unfortunately, KC's lameness has also meant that many current mid-level touring acts skip us, because they know they can't draw a large enough crowd to make it worth their time.
I can't comment on the Beautiful Bodies because I haven't heard their music yet. They seem to rely on their singer's mediocre looks to garner attention, so I'm guessing the music itself probably sucks mad horse dong.
Love 'em or hate 'em, the Republic Tigers are great at what they do. And it seems as though they might even be making a living off their music (gasp)...thanks in no part to support in their home town, I'm sure.
Just my 2 cents

STEELY DAN is definitely ONE of the '70's bands I thought we escaped from in the early '90's, I assumed. WRONG! Reason that Kansas City's music scene is so lame (for the most part) is that there are simply too many under-attended shows here. Verizon apparently got tired of 5,000 (or less) people showing up at most of their shows, the Sprint Center should (for a little while) pull in some major acts and the Uptown was okay in 2008, but no must-see concerts - not for me, anyway. Too bad, I've always liked the Uptown. What about Lawrence? Concert-wise, to MOST of us, they've been practically wiped OFF the map. Listened to the Boulevard today and THANKFULLY, I didn't hear too much SD - thank GOODNESS! PLEASE give us a break....!

Steely Dan's music is gay! So is the other dinosaur out-dated so called classic rock artists Foreigner, Reo Speedwagon and Boz Skaggs. They're all worthless and gay! Get over yourselves, people.

Steely Dan is gay (lame-*ss)!
Posted by: One Very Disgrunted Fan | December 13, 2008 at 05:24 PM
Wow, a Homophobe with no sense of musical history....How "lame" YOU are..........
Posted by: Tsk, tsk | December 13, 2008 at 06:18 PM
The Blvd has rescued us from the same dozen or so songs played ad infinitum by Classic Rock Stations. I finally have a station where I can get local news and some music to go with it. Steely Dan is Gay? Do you know where the Band got it's name. A Steely Dan is a brand of English Condom known for it's no break through qualities. By the Way There is a button somewhere on your radio that allows you to change channels. Imagine that.

Foreigner, Reo Speedwagon ????
Now your insulting me, These bands have LASTED 30 plus years
WHY ? Because the ROCK !
You probably listen to The BUZZ
and like artist who sing songs like "I kissed a Girl"

Hang in there Bubba.
We're inside the "12 Days of Christmas", right? I'm sure (lame bands and radio stations aside) we all have lots to be thankful for - right again? Let's go with that for awhile and save the flaming for later - what say?
Personally, I'm really thankful for my kids who are getting old enough to have music opinions of their own and enjoy a show or two a year with old Dad.
This is a tough time of year for lots of people - go find one of them and make it a little better - really doesn't take much effort or cost a thing.
Posted by: greenman | December 15, 2008 at 12:15 PM
Guys, I'm only expressing my opinions. I do, sincerely hope all of you have a nice and enjoyable holiday season. I'll get back up here later with specifics. Sure hope Obama can improve this country in 2009. Never thought I'd live to see ga$ at $1.35. Maybe there IS hope. Bubba said it.
Posted by: Bubba | December 15, 2008 at 04:45 PM
Gary Dean - didn't mean to insult you - when I said FOREIGNER and those other two were gay, I of course MEANT lame. Have a female friend that is 60 and saw FOREIGNER this summer at the Missouri State Fair - KEEP in mind this was her very FIRST ever concert. Said she left during the encore BECAUSE they simply din't sound anything like the FOREIGNER that she remembers - I had to inform her they only have ONE original member. If they got LOU GRAMM back, they might rock like they once did. Personally, I didn't care for their new STEVEN TYLER wanna-be vocalist. As for REO SPITWAGON, of course they're STILL around after thirty years - the classic / artists-that-matter stations CONTINUE to play them. Maybe it's me, but KEVIN CRONIN just LOOKS and acts like a ....femm. THERE! I said it. They should get GARY RICHRATH back. Oh, and Tom - Dont Buy From Scalpers - yeah, I do have a dial on my entertainment system, but it's OFTEN tough to find anything good on Kansas City radios anymore. Everyone tells me I need to get XM Radio. Heard they have all ZEPPELIN and all-AC/DC stations. Wouldn't that get OLD after awhile?
