Sorry but I got my Kiss fix before last Sunday's Chiefs game. Nice anthem rendition by the real Spaceman.

Geordan

I have seen KISS three times in KC, including my first ever concert, which had Judas Priest opening for them (the last tour with the original members before they reformed again a decade or so ago) at Municipal in 1979. They were never my favorite band, but they do give fans more bang for the buck and I think that the new CD, SONIC BOOM, which I picked up yesterday, is a brilliant piece of marketing on their part.

For the price of a single CD, you also get a bonus disc of 15 rerecorded Kiss "Klassics," plus a six song live DVD from Beunos Aires, which are all old-school Kiss songs. I could be greedy and have complained about not getting the full show on disc, but again, for the price of the CD, it's definitely worth it even if you only remotely like the band.

Sure, this band whores themselves and their image out like none other before them, and I have taken flack from friends when I opine that without the theatrics, they are an merely AVERAGE Hard Rock band, but more power to 'em. Although, these band's deals with Walmart (and what is with Pearl Jam's deal with TARGET??) concern me a little, but it appears to be a win-win for both the band and the retailer. If tickets aren't into the stratosphere, I may go check this show out.

Thanks for clearing up my confusion on that, Geordan. I was wondering about this "new" CD since they played a version of 'Shout It Out Loud' during some sports telecast I was watching and the graphic in the corner showed that it was pulled from the 'Sonic Boom' album as opposed to 'Destroyer'.

Not really a Kiss fan (saw them twice as a kid...way back in '75 at an outdoor show in Mount Vernon,NY and a few years later at MSG during the 'Love Gun' tour) but agreed, they market themselves well and continually give their loyal fanbase what it craves. Can't see anybody over 15 wanting to see them but I've never really had any kind of problem with their type of entertainment.

Granimal

Sonic Boom is the best Kiss album of the past 20 years. The re-recorded hits CD included is like a fresh coat of paint (or makeup) on the old classics.

I saw Kiss twice on the 96/97 reunion tour with the original four, and both shows still rank as my #1 and #2 best concerts ever. The shear spectacle of a Kiss concert is something everyone should experience.

This lineup may not have the original four, but it still has Gene and Paul, and that's good enough for me.

Steve

At least when you you deal with Target you can have a Parental Guidance sticker on the cover. I will never understand how you can sell R rated movies, but if you curse on a CD it has to be edited.

Geordan

Saying SONIC BOOM is the best KISS album in 20 years is accurate-it is a pretty good effort and rocks from start to finish, but the last 20 years have been pretty lean from the band as far as recording is concerning. PSYCHO CIRCUS was probably the worst thing the band ever released and that was about a decade or more ago.

The production by Paul Stanley on the new album cranks the new songs up and oddly, my favorite new song upon first listen is Lead guitarist Tommy Thayer's vocal contribution, "When Lightning Strikes." Sure, he's no Ace Frehley, but I saw Ace on FOX New's late night show, RED EYE (which is the ONLY thing I will watch on that channel) a week or two ago, and he looked and sounded pretty inebriated. Will he ever get it together??

.......as for why anyone over 15 would want to KISS in concert, well, even the hardest cynic will sometimes get a pang of nostalgia. I was feeling a bit nostalgic when AC/DC tickets went on sale for their last show here, until I saw the outlandish price for the show and thought I'd just keep my the memories of the show I saw on the "Flick Of The Switch" tour back in the 80's. So we'll see how much KISS wants to charge for a trip down memory lane. Oh, and the bonus disc of rerecorded songs included on the new CD is not as bad as you'd think, by the way.............

Geordan

Meant want to "See" Kiss in concert....Freudian slip.

Danny

Did some research at Ticketmonster with their shows in Little Rock and Nashville and they will have tix as low as 17-37 bucks which I figure is in the upper reaches then around 75 bucks after that which I imagine is what it will take to get downstairs.

You can get a meet and greet session for $1,000, definitely just for fanatics.

Granimal

Gene and Paul are pushing 60, so you can't think they'll be doing this much longer. $17 - $37 is a heck of a deal.

Speaking of deals, Sonic Boom, the re-recorded hits, and a 6-song concert DVD run only $12!

Bubba

Saw KISS on David Letterman the other night - did like the new (?) song they played. Saw them at Verizon in 2004. Some old fans SAY they're not actually KISS anymore - without ACE FREHLEY, it's Half-KISS. I disagree. KISS is KISS! Get a life.

I do remember at the 2004 show, first and second row 'meet and greet' seats cost $1,000. Whew!

footloose

can I bring a chair?

mankvill

I'll think about going to this if tickets aren't insanely expensive (yeah right.)

MetalHEAD

Yeah, seriously......can I bring a chair?

MetalHEAD

Added thought:
I've been a metal/rock fan since Machine Head/MIJ...NEVER saw Kiss as anything other than a bad glam 70s commercial.

(Go Speed Racer......)

Lick it up? REALLY?

ByeBye

The issue is THIS- These idiots did a farewell tour, they said goodbye....and so did I. period...

In my eyes they are gone..and that is that.

I despise farewell tours, hell freezs over BS!! Bowie blabbing " last time I will play these songs live"...FK THAT BS!!! FK all that fkn marketing BS!! ....

FU!!

I dont watch thier crap on TV, I dont buy their products, it is over...bye bye...

ps
but with all that said, if they let me bring a chair, I might reconsider the whole thing....

PPS
but not really ,,,

PPPS
fk anyone who says bye bye...BYE BYE!!

btw
I love the Stones, they leave all the "demise talk", "its over talk" to others, and they just keep rolling : )

Bubba's retarded half-brother

Can I bring a chair too? Tix are like $25 to $125. Which means even if they do have seats for $25, they are so high up in the back of the Sprint Center, you just might actually get a nose bleed.

donkey shane

you can't bring a lawn chair, but gene simmons will sell you one for $500

Scott

I heard you could bring a chair if its an official Kiss merchandise chair, I think they want proof of purchase too, they retail for about 29.99 at most major retail stores, I think its well worth it, the chair comes with face paint too!!!

Granimal

Sometimes when bands get back together with the intent to do a farewell tour, they discover that they still have a little more in the tank.

I look at the Kiss farewell tour as a farewell to the original lineup. I'm glad they stuck around, because this new album is really, really good.

Zod

I saw them on Letterman this week, too, and I remembered how much I loved them as a kid in the 70s/80s. Had every album. Knew every song. Dressed up as Peter Criss for Halloween. Had two(!) Ace Frehley t-shirts and a jacket with the Destroyer album cover art on the back.

And in thinking of all this, I got to wondering if Kiss was our generation's Jonas Brothers and I just didn't know it.

MetalHEAD

OK GUYS....I'm gonna climb out on a limb here and suggest to those of you who have a firm grasp on the realities of the "pay attention, I'm trying to sell you something here and IT'S REALLY COOL" commercial side of the music industry versus the actual-talent side of the same (52 word sentence with a contraction AND hyphen):

Kiss sucks.

Kiss sucked at the height of their lunchbox-fuggly-toy figurine success.

Kiss still sucks.

Scott

Kiss is a little to rooted in the theatrics and the merch for me, that aside, I dont think anyone does it better but I have a hard time taking the music seriously. I guess you could argue your not suppose to take it seriously, but i do and its not for me, although, if they played some where small I might go see them, but my guess is it will be a the sprint center and seeing a couple ants with face paint scream sounds kinda boring.

snarky

so, what you are saying is, I can bring a chair, as long it is a KISS chair?

PS
and yeah, that is about where this place is at, as far a cutting anything.

The friggin NERVE

It's hard to take musical advice from someone who goes by 'Metalhead.' You probably like some third-rate Slash Metal band more than KISS, who in fact, probably wouldn't have picked up a guitar if it hadn't been for KISS. Sure, KISS is kind of a joke, but they KNOW it. You are still listening to Metal in 2009, and if you haven't evolved at least a little musically in the past 20 years, you know, when Metal was on it's way OUT, then you really need to look in a mirror before you point to ANYTHING and say it sucks........

chairNazi

OK!! THATS IT ! ! ! !

NO SOUP....errrrr...I mean,

NO CHAIR FOR YOU !!

MetalHEAD

Nervey BABY....pull up a chair and let's talk awhile....

Please note you failed to correctly cap-key the nom de guerre (that's French....) MetalHEAD in your cite; please note for proper sourcing/use.

Actually David Gilmour was my primary (term used to mean "First" as opposed to "Main") inspiration to steal my first guitar and pen (see: "Any Colour You Like: Dark Side of the Moon", Pink Floyd; 1973).

Metal actually has evolved significantly & BROTHER you are missing some truly fantastic, current music if you have turned your back on the Faith.

Kiss...well, that was simply an opinion...but they have always been less-than-stupendously-fantastic (suck).

"Lick it up...lick it up....ah, ah, ah.."

H

I've seen KISS three times. The first time was in '86 at Municipal with W.A.S.P. (no make-up and no ACE) The next two times were on the '96 reunion tour. The show at Kemper with Alice in Chains is in my top ten, but later in the tour I saw them in Wichita and it was like seeing Spinal Tap. I never really considered KISS a metal band, just a party rock band that put out two really good albums: Alive and Destroyer.

Steve

Even a good joke gets tired after a while. This one is beyond dead.

4 legs

yeah jokes do get old,
and then they are not funny ,,,,

but then they come back and they are funny again.

hey pull my chair ....
err ... I mean pull my finger.

CH

Saw them in '89 in Little Rock without makeup, and then on the Reunion Tour in Topeka. Have to say the '89 show was much, much better. In fact the tribute band Deuce I saw in Iowa in 2005 put on a better show than the reunion version.

Think I'll save my money for merch at the Marduk show the next night. Will take corpsepaint on Black Metallers over the aging Kiss with their "fake" members.

Scott

Metal dead in 2009, hmm, I dunno, a good friend of mine is pushing me to go see Metalocalypse at the Uptown with Dethklok & Mastodon. I trust his word, he rarely steers me in the wrong direction. Sure metal might not be as popular as it once was but you can say that about a lot music genres and many of those still have some cutting edge records coming out today, be it jam music, folk, ect.
