Go see the Pedaljets. They're good for your health.
If you’re tired of hearing and reading about the reform of health care and health insurance and want to hear and see people doing something about it, this weekend’s second annual Apocalypse Meow is for you. The event is a benefit/fundraiser sponsored by the Midwest Music Foundation for its Musicians Health Care Fund.
The first Apocalypse Meow was a two-day benefit for one of those musicians, Abigail Henderson of the Gaslights, who was being treated for breast cancer and whose insurance did not cover all of her astronomical medical bills. Henderson and her husband, Chris Meck, have since organized the music foundation, which, in addition to addressing the health-care issue, promotes the city’s bustling music scene.
This year’s Apocalypse Meow is also a two-day event. The First Friday pre-party starts at 7 p.m. Friday at Midwestern Music Co., 1830 Locust (a block south of Grinders). Howard Iceberg & the Titanics and the Gaslights will perform. Admission is free but donations will be accepted. You can buy $1 tickets to enter Saturday night’s raffle for a Les Paul guitar. (Tickets are also available at Guitar Source, 11554 W. 95th St. in Overland Park.)
Saturday night’s show starts at 6 p.m. at Crosstown Station, 1522 McGee, with an hour of music from DJ SlimmSpins. The rest of the bill: Tiny Horse (Henderson’s and Meck’s acoustic project) at 7 p.m.; Sara Swenson at 7:45 p.m.; Alacartoona at 8:45 p.m.; the Grisly Hand at 9:45 p.m.; the Columns at 10:45 p.m.; and the Pedaljets at 11:45 p.m.
Between performances there will be raffles (including one for that guitar) and at 9:45 p.m. there will be a live auction. Among the auction and raffle items: two pairs of VIP level tickets to the Leonard Cohen show Monday night at the Midland; a baseball autographed by Zack Greinke; Chiefs tickets; a one-year pass to the Riot Room; a $50 gift certificate to the Mercy Seat tattoo parlor; several restaurant gift certificates. For a complete list, visit the Apocalypse Meow site.
