"He can sing" is an understatement. I just saw him at the ACL fest last fall and he was amazing. Can't wait to see him in KC! Now if we could just get him to get the Mavericks back together.

wadkc

Have seen him several times, latest being SXSW last year. A great time. Don't be fooled by the youtube clip. He also does a lot of upbeat stuff. C U there!
If anyone shows up from this group, we should have a designated time at the bar and meet.

must-see

musicfan

Agreed--absolutely a must-see!

Tim--has Raul EVER played Kansas City? Even with The Mavericks?

Tim Finn

i've never seen him here, but i could have missed it.

bob

Wow. I loved the Mavericks back in the day. However, Raoul has gotten fat. Take care of yourself.

kcmom

By the way, it's spelled RAUL (it's incorrect in the headline.)

wadkc

This might be a little deep here but my mother and I loved The Mavericks. It's always fun when you can connect musically with your parents. She had been battling cancer and on this warm Spring day in 1994, she and I listened to The Mavericks while I cleaned out my car in my parents driveway. She for the first time, taking off her wig and letting me see her free of artificial displays. She sat on the porch dancing and singing while I peered from my vehicle smiling with her. A couple of weeks later I bought us 2 tickets to see the band at Johnson Counties Community College's new theater. She never got to see the concert but I didn't want to take anyone else. So I sat there with an empty seat beside me, half crying, half smiling throughout the show. I'm sure the audience around me thought I was a bit off. The band was perfect, the situation confusing.

Needless to say I will always be connected to the voice in The Mavericks.

Thanks for letting me share, it feels good.

kcmom

That's a very touching story...thanks for sharing it. Looking forward to seeing you at the show.

Tim Finn

thanks, w. (and thanks for the fix, mom)

I like what I've heard (Los Super Seven mostly) from Malo/Mavericks but for whatever reason, have never really jumped onboard as a fan in the form of purchasing his/their recordings or seeimg him/them live. I must say, the exuberance of those in this thread (especially wadkc)has piqued my interest about catching this show and since it comes on a Friday @ Knuckleheads, I really can't rationalize a reason to miss this.

kcmom

Well, the opportunity to catch him live is pretty rare aound these parts, as you can gather from what you've read here. Heck, I have every solo CD he's done, all the Mavericks stuff, and I've NEVER seen him live! For me, April 2nd will be a "bucket list" night!

wadkc

Pell, pick up What a Crying Shame or Trampoline and you'll be a believer. Love to meet you.

Joe

The Mavericks opened for Mary Chapin Carpenter at Memorial Hall in 1994 or 1995. Chapin Carpenter was fine, but The Mavericks stole the show as the opener. Opened Oh What a Crying Shame. I was hooked from the first notes.

musicfan

Thanks for that memory, Joe...that would have been quite a show as Raul and MCC are two of my VERY favorite artists of ALL time. 1994? I think I was probably at home with a toddler and a preschooler with concert-going a distant hope...

Joe

Musicfan, My wife and I were also with a toddler and preschooler at the time. Our kids must be close in age! We didn't have much in discretional funds then (still don't now that they are in college!), but my wife loved MCC's record Come On Come On and we decided to go. The Mavericks simply stole the show and that wasn't easy to do because MCC was very good.

musicfan

Tell me about it! The oldest just graduated college and has the nerve to be engaged; the youngest will start college exactly one week after the wedding! Talk about no money...

Hope you can make it to the show.

I saw The Mavericks at Memorial Hall in the late '90s. Junior Brown opened up and was called back for a true encore, not one of those scripted "oh here they play the hit song" encores. The Mavericks were on fire and had me, my date and plenty of others dancing in the aisles.
Wadkc, your story was very touching!

pellboy

Thanks for the tip, wad. And I plan on picking up some tix this weekend.
