Eminem, A Perfect Circle, Muse all are playing Lollapalooza the same weekend as Kanrocksas.
But Coldplay, Foo Fighters, My Morning Jacket and others will be at Lolla but not Kanrocksas.
From the Chicago Tribune:
CHICAGO — Coldplay, My Morning Jacket, Deadmau5 and A Perfect Circle will join previously reported headliners Eminem, Foo Fighters and Muse at Lollapalooza on Aug. 5-7 in Grant Park, the festival will announce Tuesday.
Also among the artists to be announced by Texas-based promoters C3 Presents are Cee Lo Green, Damian Marley with Nas, the Cars, Ween, Bright Eyes, Big Audio Dynamite, Girl Talk, Titus Andronicus, Deftones, Kid Cudi, Sleigh Bells and Arctic Monkeys.
The seventh annual festival will again feature more than 130 performers on eight stages.
As usual, the festival has only a smattering of hip-hop and world-music artists, though a handful of Chilean bands — Chico Trujillo, Los Bunkers and Ana Tijoux — have been booked as part of a cultural exchange with Lollapalooza Chile, which debuted April 2-3 in Santiago.
But Lollapalooza 2011 will once again raise the profile of electronic artists, as affirmed by the headlining status of Deadmau5 (Toronto progressive-house star Joel Zimmerman) and a significantly larger presence for the Perry's Lounge DJ stage, which will now be able to accommodate more than 15,000 fans in its new location west of Columbus Avenue on Hutchinson Field. The stage's namesake, Lollapalooza cofounder Perry Farrell, will be among the artists, performing under the name PerryEtty vs. Chris Cox.
Three-day tickets ($215) are available at lollapalooza.com. Single-day tickets will go on sale June 7. Dates and times of the performances will be announced at a later date.
Here's the complete lineup that will be announced Tuesday (with a few later additions expected for the Kidsapalooza stage, which will bring the total number of acts to 136, according to C3 Presents executive Charles Attal):
Headliners: Eminem, Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Muse, My Morning Jacket, Deadmau5, A Perfect Circle, Cee Lo Green, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley & Nas, the Cars, Ween.
Also (listed alphabetically): An Horse, Arctic Monkeys, Atmosphere, Beats Antique, Beirut, Best Coast, Big Audio Dynamite, Black Cards, Black Lips, Boy & Bear, Bright Eyes, Cage the Elephant, Chico Trujillo, Christina Perri, City and Colour, Cold War Kids, Crystal Castles, Cults, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., Death From Above 1979, Deftones, Delta Spirit, Disappears, DJ Mel, Dom.
Electric Touch, Ellie Goulding, Explosions in the Sky, Fences, Fitz & the Tantrums, Flogging Molly, Foster the People, Friendly Fires, Gold Motel, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, Grouplove.
Imelda May, Iration, J. Roddy Walston and the Business, Julia Easterlin, Kerli, Kids These Days, Lia Ices, Lissie, Local Natives, Lord Huron, Los Bunkers, Lykke Li, Manchester Orchestra, Maps & Atlases, Mayer Hawthorne & the County, Noah & The Whale.
OK Go, Patrick Stump, Phantogram, Portugal the Man, Ratatat, Reptar, Rival Schools, Ruby Jane, Ryan Bingham & The Dead Horses, Ryan Leslie, Sam Adams, Skylar Grey, Sleigh Bells, Smith Westerns.
TAB the Band, Tennis, the Chain Gang of 1974, the Drums, the Joy Formidable, the Kills, the Kingston Springs, the Mountain Goats, the Naked and Famous, the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, the Pretty Reckless, the Vaccines, Tinie Tempah, Titus Andronicus, Two Door Cinema Club, Typhoon, White Lies, Wye Oak, Ximena Saritana, Young Man, Young the Giant.
Perry's Lounge electronic/DJ stage: Girl Talk, Pretty Lights, Kid Cudi, the Bloody Beetroots Death Crew, Afrojack, Modeselektor, Skrillex, PerryEtty vs Chris Cox, Chuckie, the Glitch Mob, Busy P, Joachim Garraud, Super Mash Bros., Jay Electronica, 12th Planet, Daedulus, Feed Me, Jackmaster, Collie Buddz, Savoy, Kyle Lucas & Captain Midnite, Ana Tijoux, Midnight Conspiracy, L1ght, Lady D.
That's a lineup. Don't know where they'll park or camp or stay, but $215 three-day tickets make Kanrocksas' $179 two-day tickets look a little steep.

I'd take the Black Keys and the Flaming Lips over any of the Lolla bands not coming here. Can we at least see how this all plays out until we declare it the worst thing in the history of the world.
Posted by: Chris | April 26, 2011 at 10:46 AM
I dont think there is camping available, but packages including hotels are running about $1200 per person. On a side note I would love to see that tent which holds 15,000, wow, that is a lot of tarp.
Posted by: BA | April 26, 2011 at 10:48 AM
I think you're reading something that's not here, Chris. It's certainly not "the worst thing in the history of the world." It's a good thing. Now, is it perfect? No. It will be August and there is no shade at the Speedway. None. And camping is miserable enough without it being hot as hell. The incomplete lineup feels like it's half a festival at the moment -- at the moment -- but I think Eminem is a good get. Nonetheless, the festival runners need to know criticisms before the festival happens.
But I think we can all agree that Kanrocksas is a shit name.

Wow, confirmed lineup looks pretty strong. Going to be in Chicago that weekend so depending on the lineup Sat.night and the price of single days ($85?), I might be there.
Posted by: pellboy | April 26, 2011 at 11:39 AM
Ha, no arguement on the name. It's terrible. Zod21, my comment was not really directed at you but and the amount of negative comments I've read since this was announced yesterday. You're right, it's not perfect. Price might be a little high but at least this could be a really cool yearly event in KC. I hope it gets enough support.
Posted by: Chris | April 26, 2011 at 12:37 PM
it's hot at the speedway when there are races, too. i was at an IRL race in early july 2006. 90-degrees plus. But 82K showed up and stayed all day. people go to royals games when it's oppressively hot, too.
Posted by: tim finn | April 26, 2011 at 01:00 PM
Chicago lineup looks far better to me. Much more for the price as well. If it's a typical August day, the Speedway track will be 120 degrees! Walking from the camp site/parking areas to the stage area is not fun. I learned that fact at Nascar event with scorching temps. Better have lots of EMT's on site. Not too mention the KS police will have a field day with fines/dui checkpoints etc. I guess it's cool that KS/KC is doing this but it feels very unoriginal/uninspired. At least Rockfest is more accessible. (also uninspired lately) This should have been called it Lollapalooza Light or Lolly Jr. I'd like to be excited but I'll pass vs pass out.

The Lolla under card blows away Kanrocksas. Also, the FLips and Black Keys were here last year at Sandstone and the Crossroads, respectively. Lolla's headliners blow besides MMJ, but DFA1979 and some others will make it pretty exclusive for the midwest.
Posted by: Vince | April 26, 2011 at 01:40 PM
Just generally speaking, Tim, the diff between a Royals game or a Race and this festival is people spend four/eight hours at a sporting event and then they go home.
People will be camping in the heat with no food and water to speak of (guess that's what the assembled muckity mucks meant by each person spending $180 a day while they're there -- five $18 bottles of water a day).
I mean, the conditions won't rise to the level of, say, Haiti, but folks are going to be fighting for shade.
Fighting for Shade: New band name -- I've called it.
Some will just call camping out in those conditions natural selection at work and kids being idiots, but, still. It's kind of irresponsible. It's not unlikely that someone will die.
Wakarusa was in, what?, June?, and that was brutal. And it was by a lake. With trees.
And weed.
Posted by: Zod21 | April 26, 2011 at 01:46 PM
I meant 10 $18 bottles of water a day.
Posted by: Zod21 | April 26, 2011 at 01:48 PM
Just curious to any one who's been to all three days of Lolla, how many bands did you actually get to see? After you saw a band on one stage, how long does it take to get the the band on the other stages?
Posted by: Steve J | April 26, 2011 at 01:55 PM
you can bring anything (within reason) into the camp grounds. and there will be vendors.
Posted by: tim finn | April 26, 2011 at 02:03 PM
people are gonna spend all day at arrowhead for that kenney chesney show in late july.
Posted by: tim finn | April 26, 2011 at 02:04 PM
Anybody comparing Lolla's lineup to the KC event, um ok I guess you're right. The 20-year-old event (7 years in Chicago) is drawing better bands than the first time one in KC. Shocker! And now we're claiming someone is going to die? Wow. I know it can get hot here in July & August but I'm pretty sure the metro does not shut down. What a bunch of whiners.
Posted by: chris | April 26, 2011 at 02:06 PM
Steve - I've been to Lollapalooza and it's hard because most of the bands play at the same time and there is a 15 minute or so turnover to get from one stage to the other, but depending on the location of the stage, it can take up to 30 minutes with all the people walking around. I think for the economy, the price and the bands, the Kanrocksas ticket price is spot on...and local!! I'm sure water won't be that expensive and the people running it will most likely make an effort to have local vendors (if they can) and fairly priced beer, water, etc.
Posted by: cmoore | April 26, 2011 at 02:14 PM
Yeah, since the Kansas Speedway allows one 6-pack sized soft cooler per person into their racing events, shouldn't they at least allow that for this?
Posted by: pellboy | April 26, 2011 at 02:17 PM
What really kills your time is if you want to see someone on stage 1 and your at stage 3, first off, you have to leave early, so you miss the last couple songs at one location to get to the next location, this was the case when I was at memphis in may, of course that was 3 main stages and kanrock will only have 2 main stages so it might not be that bad but you are sure to have overlaps and coin flips as to who you will see. Wonder if they will let people return to the camping area once you have entered the concert grounds. Nice way to save a little money by eating lunch or dinner back at camp, of course thats more missed music too. Starting to wonder if festies are all that great, someone find out if we can bring flags like they do in europe, ever see those flag poles in the crowd, gotta have them at the show!
Posted by: Green | April 26, 2011 at 02:51 PM
Where are all the supporters of (the unpleasant conditons at) the dump?? Why not defend the conditons at KanROCKsas too?
After all, it is the permanent condition at the dump, but only for 3 days at this fest, yet you all are up in arms? How funny.
I thought all you hillbillys loved these type of "rugged" conditons.... porta potties.... dirt floors/wood chips.... outside..... under the sky.... out in the weather.... camping... etc etc, arent these the very things you love about the dump??
Come on, it sound EXACTLY like the type of thing you backwards ass hillbillies would love.
Posted by: BA | April 26, 2011 at 02:54 PM
Green, I guess the festival/camping setup will be attractive to those coming in from out of town, but how many of the older fans (like myself) from the KC area will want to utilize those services? I'm down with camping and all, but my experiences are usually in a wooded setting near a lake. If I were going to this and with my house just 20 minutes away, I'm sorry, but I'm sleeping in my own bed at night. Who am I going to miss at 3am anyway, some local band that I can catch in a bar most nights for $5? I'd probably opt for showing up in the late afternoon/early evening when I suspect the top acts will start playing and with the free parking available, I'd just do it all over again the next day, but that's just me.
Posted by: pellboy | April 26, 2011 at 03:55 PM
Yea, I was thinking the same thing, maybe one night of camping at the most depending on who is playing Saturday morning. If its a cool night camping shouldnt be to bad but come 8am the lack of shade will heat those tents up in no time, maybe it will be cool and rainy, one could hope. I am still not sold on the festie myself, need to see more bands to justify the cost. Promoters should try and cater to the crowd a little too, maybe something like a free water initiative, it would help a lot if its super hot, maybe get someone local to back it with there advertising on the bottles.
Posted by: Green | April 26, 2011 at 04:10 PM
LOL, two of the most vocal defenders of the dump, whining about possible outdoor weather conditions.
That is too freekin funny.
Posted by: BA | April 26, 2011 at 04:25 PM
"If I were going to this and with my house just 20 minutes away, I'm sorry, but I'm sleeping in my own bed at night."
That is exactly what I did with Wakarusa, PB.
I think it's good that someone is taking the initiative on this. It's a pretty strong line up considering. Why August vs. Sept or June is beyond me. The weather was always pleasant for the three years of Wakarusa that I attended, but a parking lot/infield situation in early August? I'm envisioning a repeat of Woodstock '99. Where are people going to camp anyway? In the outdoors section of Dicks or Target?
Posted by: NEW | April 26, 2011 at 04:25 PM
""Why August vs. Sept or June is beyond me.""
make it a trifecta......
I thought weather at concerts was never an issue with you dump lovers.
Posted by: BA | April 26, 2011 at 04:34 PM
I remember reading somewhere that the weekend in August was chosen specifically to book artists already planning on going to Chicago for Lolla.
I'll have to search around to see if I can find that quote.
Posted by: Matt | April 26, 2011 at 04:44 PM
The heat is what I was getting at, crossroad shows are at night, night shows dont have to deal with the heat. I said I was all for some rain, rain doesnt bother me, heat just sucks though, but if there is water around for people to stay cool and maybe some of the mist tents all should be well, maybe leave a few nascars out so we can drive them around with the windows down and cool off.
Posted by: Green | April 26, 2011 at 05:12 PM
"maybe leave a few nascars out so we can drive them around with the windows down and cool off" LOL, Hahaha, that is funny, really :)
anyway.....
I agree, heat sucks, and that is why concerts (IF POSSIBLE) should be held inside a REAL venue with HV/AC (Air Conditioning) NOT at an open air dump.
H O T is just one of many problems with the dump (just in case I have not mentioned it before).
Posted by: BA | April 26, 2011 at 05:47 PM
Is there a map posted anywhere yet, showing how KanROCKsas will be setup? Like where is parking/ camping/ stages etc etc? Anyone have a link?
Posted by: BA | April 26, 2011 at 05:56 PM
Getting older, I am not a big fan of outside shows, especially without a seat. You have to factor in these things, along with the ticket price, when going to shows.
Posted by: Steve J | April 26, 2011 at 06:03 PM
I could be wrong... but maybe anyone really into the kanROCKsas show should buy the VIP tickets versus regualr ticket compared to Lolla.....
Lollapalooza regular tickst are $225 and VIP tickets are $850.00 an extra $625.00
http://www.lollapalooza.com/tickets/vip-tickets/
kanROCKsas reular tickets are 179 and VIP are $359 only an extra $180.
http://kanrocksas.com/tickets
i could be wrong becasue I dont know what VIP gives you exactly, but up close and out of the MEGAcrowd is usually worth a lil extra. It is all expensive, but compared to Lolla VIP, it is a deal...... maybe...

I've done Lolla 3 times, It's a classy event. They have a suprisingly good variety of $5 food options because they let local restaurants represent various cuisine. They have numerous water fountains and all water bottles to be brought in. It takes about 20 - 30 minutes to walk from end to end but they (from my experience) cater similar sounding music on each side for the day (I remember Deerhunter > National > Arcade Fire vs Slightly Social Distoriton > AFI > Green Day as an example on main stages).
Does anyone know how late music will run? Lolla days go from Noon - 10:30 sharp. I wouldn't guarantee Kanrocksas will go late night until I see it. Cities can call curfews.

Got tix on pre-sale.
Primus/A Perfect Circle/Muse/Black Keys all locally are worth the price.
Love to camp, rock and roll.....
Posted by: MetalHEAD | April 26, 2011 at 08:42 PM
It cracks me up reading where Speedway reps said, "patrons can visit the legends shopping/restaurants" etc. And how far exactly is it to walk from the stage or camping area to say Cheeseburger in Paradise? Many, shall we say less than in shape patrons that attend these festivals, would need to take an Fn cab that far! Too pricey as well IMO especially if you only really like a few bands. I'll wait til my faves tour on their own and not pay to see the abbreviated greatest hits sets most will perform. KS is just going for the money grab here w/Lollapolooza performers. The Rivermarket shows and even Starlight have been the best shows in town for National acts.
Posted by: Muse Man | April 26, 2011 at 08:43 PM
One aspect that may allow the shows to go late late late is the noise level. The design of the track limits noise leaving the track.
The track was built in a "pit". That means they dug way down before paving out the track. One reason they did that was to allow fans in the stands to see cars no matter where they were on the track. I think another reason may have been to keep noise inside the pit.
I have been surprised, as I walked up to active racing, at how little noise was coming from the track, until you got inside. Limiting noise like that may allow them to rock all night, but I dont know for sure.
I tried to find a map, but all I found was words describing it. It said they will have 3 stages inside the tri-oval, and the party/festival area is the infield. I wonder if that means they will not even have people in the stands?
I am sure it will all work out fine, Chris Fritz knows what he is doing.

You know how I know you guys are old? Seriously, way too much whining. I bet those of you that don't go because it is too expensive will probably find some other excuse when the bands you like come around by themselves. See them while you can, you never know when you will get another chance. And are you guys that unimaginative that you can't think of a single way to stay cool when camping or should the promoters provide that for you too?
Posted by: Sam | April 26, 2011 at 10:49 PM
yeah green, that kid is calling you old, you better watch out..... you used to be the youngster here ;)
Posted by: Jazz | April 27, 2011 at 12:15 AM
oh and sammyboy..... as far as me?
let me know when you 1/4 the way to my 1500+(andstillfkncounting) lifetime concerts..... and then maybe we can talk about what, is what, about what.
I'll still be going when you start whining about the heat.
Posted by: Jazz | April 27, 2011 at 12:21 AM
I see a lot shows Sam and I promise I will be at the smaller gigs, no excuses there, just not crazy about the festies, I feel like they are a lot of work just to enjoy some music. Add in large crowds, super high temps, over priced food and drink and it just sounds like less and less fun. Not trying to sound old or whiny, still pretty young, but I enjoy these gigs one at a time. For me, each show is a lot to take in if its good and hitting 10 to 15 acts can be overload, you start to push more for bragging rights than just enjoying a band or two on their own.
I might go, still on the fence, Eminem and Muse are not selling points at all for me. Already seen Perfect Circle a couple times, one show being front and center with Maynard damn near screaming to me, eye contact and everything, pretty intense, seen flaming lips five times, saw girl talk last year along with the black keys ... so with that its hard to justify 200 plus for a concert. Kid Cudi, Arctic Monkeys and Primus would be fun but I will need more than that to push me overboard.
Posted by: Green | April 27, 2011 at 12:47 AM
You tell em Green, besides you have free tickets coming, cuz you were first to correctly guess which venue it would be at. fk yeah!!!
Posted by: Jazz | April 27, 2011 at 10:13 AM
I wasn't trying to tell anyone off, hope it didnt come off like that. As for the free tiks, hmm, and who is gonna give me these free tickets, haha, I wish, but kinda doubtful.
Posted by: Green | April 27, 2011 at 11:35 AM
"I thought weather at concerts was never an issue with you dump lovers."
I don't see anyone here in love with the dump BA. We just don't have an obsessive hatred for the place.
And I bring up Woodstock '99 for a reason. Perhaps you are too young or perhaps anything that ever happened musically outside of KS and MO is off your radar but if you do happen to recall, it was held on the tarmack of an abandoned airforce base on a hot August weekend in Upstate NY and a bottle of water was $4. The result was less than desirable (lots of fights and fans setting concession stands on fire). I'm hoping the promoters here take a cue from those events.
Posted by: NEW | April 27, 2011 at 01:42 PM
I was thinking about that the other day NEW, it worked on paper, an old airbase with all the needs for a festival but everything went wrong, of course it didnt help with limp bizkit starting a roit by pushing the crowd to go crazy.
Posted by: Green | April 27, 2011 at 02:17 PM
Flea playing naked was funny as fuck.
Posted by: BA | April 27, 2011 at 02:43 PM
Yea, I wanna say they (chili peps) played Fire by Hendrix when the freaks started the merch on fire way in the back, then there was looting and property damage, fights, etc ... what a mess.
Posted by: Green | April 27, 2011 at 04:47 PM
No kidding Green. I used to jest how it should have been dubbed "Altamont '99" vs. "Woodstock '99". That was funny though BA. Wasn't the whole band naked at one point?
Posted by: NEW | April 27, 2011 at 05:39 PM
I think they may have had socks on!
Posted by: Joe | April 27, 2011 at 08:39 PM
Yup, I heard a direct interview with whats-his name-leadsinger of the Chili peppers saying they played in a smaller strip joint, years ago, and the club strippers "talked them into" into playing naked, except for thier "sock puppets"
; ).
As far as woodstock99....
I always wondered if some of that ending mess was choreographed, with the Peppers playing FIRE and it was the end of the fest and maybe insurance was involved..... I dont know, but we watched all 3 days on pay per view, and it all seemd to run pretty smooth until the end.
The only thing that bothered me about that situation was the reports/stories about some women being raped in their tents at the end, and the local police not doing much investigating..... somewhat alluding that the woman either made it up, wanted it or deserved it. That part bothers me more than the fires ,but you know, really anything that ever happened musically outside of KS and MO is off my radar ;)
anyway...... as far as the speedway doing a repeat of that, probably not.
They have so many modern, high tech, zooming security cameras located throughout the area that they could zoom in on smallest freckle, above the left nipple, of that cute drunk girl baring her titties at 5:37:23 PM on Friday evening
So I doubt any chance of Woodstock type of problems happening at the end.......
Posted by: BA | April 28, 2011 at 12:36 AM
Did I hear this correct? That a patron CANNOT purchase a one-day ticket ONLY to this two-day fedtival? If so, this lets me out - UNLESS those two days are UNSEASONABLY cool (75-84 degrees) the August heat for two days will be a bit much for me to even consider. I sort of THINK this event may 'financially bomb' anyway - with the way the economy is. SURE hope I'm wrong. Bubba said it.
