Several lists are out there. Not much of a consensus, but Bon Iver gets several mentions. Here's a link to a few:
- Stereogum
- Spin
- NPR
- Pitchfork
- NME
- Paste
- Metacritic, which quantifies reviews and gives albums a number score
- Stereogum also compiled a list of the best metal albums of the year, so far.

Touche Amore - Parting The Sea Between Brightness And Me
Amazing emotional hardcore/(real) screamo. Far and away my fave thus year so far.

Good lists though Spin started with the Foo Fighters and lost me right away. I didn't read any farther. I am liking the Danger Mouse release and even more the new Low Anthem album "Smart Flesh". The one that I just downloaded a couple of nights ago that I keep playing over and over is the new (KC's) The Wilders album. There are 2 or 3 throw aways but for the most part I really like it.

Wire, "Red Barked Tree"
Raphael Saadiq, "Stone Rollin"

That's funny Mike Snell because I thought the same thing when I saw your byline... I didn't want to read any longer.
Top 7.
Foo Fighters - "Wasting Light"
Gardens & Villa - self titled
Black Country Communion - "2"
Tedeschi Trucks Band - "Revelator"
Adele - "21"
Rick Trevino - "Whole Town Blue"
Gregg Allman - "Low Country Blues"

LOW - "C'Mon"
My favorite album of the year so far. The song "Witches" is as dark and gorgeous as much of the band's best work.
Also, a few others stand out for me, so far this year:
Ron Sexsmith - "Long Player Late Bloomer"
Jessica Lee Mayfield - "Tell Me"
Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion - "Bright Examples"
And being a fan of the bands from back in the day, it's great to see new discs from The Flestones, The Cars, Gang Of Four, Social Distortion, and Wire hit stores this year.

Mine...
Dave Alvin - Eleven Eleven
The Smithereens - 2011
Tedeschi Trucks Band - Revelator
Booker T. Jones - The Road From Memphis
Gregg Allman - Low Country Blues
TUF - Wrong Side Of The Blues
And although not really new music, but still a new release...
Neil Young & the International Harvesters - A Treasure

Oh and forgot perhaps my favorite of the bunch...
Jason Isbell & 400 Unit - Here We Rest
Posted by: pellboy | June 30, 2011 at 08:45 AM
Bon Iver is OK, but they are a little to hard. What you need is a short lady playing violin backed up by a couple of gay guys playing accoustic guitars while humming softly along with a childrens choir singing songs about world peace.

Pellboy is right, that Neil Young live album is great, shame his new releases bore me. I also like Loudon Wainwright III's "40 Odd Years" boxed set. If I had the new BBC Richard Thompson boxed set for sure it would be included.
I feel compelled to add these
The Unthanks - Last
PJ Harvey - Let England Shake
The Civil Wars - Barton Hollow(even if it sounds like a new Nickel Creek album)
Marianne Faithfull - Horses and High Heels (the cover of Greg Dulli and Mark Lanegan's "The Stations" is perfect for her voice)
Explosions in the Sky - Take Care, Take Care
Michael Chapman - Fully Qualified Survivor (Light in the Attic reissue)
Twilight Singers - Dynamite Steps
Posted by: Bewlay | June 30, 2011 at 08:57 AM
Warren Haynes - Man in Motion
Paul Simon - So Beautiful So What
Tedeschi/Trucks Band - Revelator
Dave Alvin - Eleven Eleven
Social Distortion - Nursery Rhymes
I need to check out that Jason Isbell cd!

My favorites (ie, best of what I've heard) of the year so far:
Rainmakers - 25 On
Tommy Shaw - The Great Divide
and an honorable mention (I don't own the album yet, but it's supposed to be great, and I know how good the band is)
TUF - Wrong Side Of The Blues

Haven't picked it up yet, but am looking forward to the latest Smithereens disc, Pellboy. Those early albums (Hell, pretty much every album they released) still sound good blasting out of my car stereo.

A couple of repreats on my list which is to be expected:
Warren Haynes - Man In Motion
T/TB - Revelator
The Decemberists - The King Is Dead
Robbie Robertson - How to Become Clairvoyent
Foo Fighters - Wasted Light
I didn't know about the Smithereens disc, PB. Thanks for clueing me in. Another band out of Hoboken, the Feelies have a new record out as well (Here Before) on Bar/None that is worth checking out.

@Geordan/NEW, yeah, actually purchased the new Smithereens album as a download which was a first for me (whole album speaking) and it's actually very good and a nice return to form after all the Beatles remakes. Fits right in with all their earlier stuff, with the title being a play on their biggest selling record '11'. Baffles me that a band that once (and apparently still does) made such radio-friendly tunes, can't find a bigger audience for their stuff. Check it out, they still sound great and their playing is as good as ever...just wish they would play a gig out this way again. Are you listening, Frank? ;)
