On Wednesday, Sept. 7, nine local movie theaters, including four IMAX theaters, will present "Wynton Marsalis and Eric Clapton Play the Blues," a replay of the duo's April 8 concert at Rose Hall in New York. Several things needed to be said right off the bat about the Low Anthem show at the Record Bar on Monday.
First, to be in this band, apparently, you need to play at least four instruments, even if one is the zither or the saw or a flugelhorn or a contraption of small cymbals called the crotales. And you must be prepared to play anything with a bow, including a banjo. Or the crotales. And if the setlist calls for it, you should be ready to jump quickly from the drums to the pump organ and then onto the standup bass.

Def Leppard may be the ultimate Saturday night party band.
The only ambition of its marvelously melodic and unrepentantly escapist music is to make the listener feel good. Intentionally devoid of significance, Def Leppard's highly processed approach strategically fuses the catchiest elements of pop and heavy metal. The band offered ninety minutes of perfectly executed arena rock Saturday at the Sprint Center.

Steely Dan was in town, and more than a celebration of the vaunted music catalog of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, the two-hour concert before a crowd of more than 6,500 showcased the musical precision and dexterity of the duo and its backing band.
