The Hearts of Darkness will ascend Mulberry Mountain in Ozark, Ark., and entertain the masses at Wakarusa 2012.
Additions were announced yeserday to the four-day festival in Ozark, Ark., from May 31-June 3. Among them: Primus, Girl Talk, Umphrey's McGee, Fitz & the Tantrums, Blitzen Trapper, the Del McCoury Band, Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers, Heartless Bastards, Dirtfoot, the Delta Saints and Kansas City's own Hearts of Darkness. The final lineup announcement comes next week. For more info, go here.
All of us in HOD have had a difficult time keeping our lips zipped about this since we first got the call last October. We're super-excited for this great opportunity.

HOD rocked the house at Farm Aid. Too bad so many missed the op to hear HOD. Flippin' awesome on the big stage! I heart the HEARTS! Gonna try to make this show!

Wow. The initial announcement was weak and this one is even weaker. This lineup couldn't get me to go to Lawrence, much less Arkansas.
Posted by: live music fan | January 13, 2012 at 12:42 PM
Yeah, I agree, LMF. Also, I have seen Hearts Of Darkness live, and sorry, but I just don't care for 'em. Good to see KC represented, but all the praise these guys get baffles me. Add a musical charlatan like Girl Talk to the bill and I probably wouldn't even drive Downtown for this fest.

So happy for HOD! WOOOO!
Posted by: Lauren | January 13, 2012 at 01:00 PM
I find it so humorous to listen to people that obviously do not have the talent that these bands playing at Waka have. If you do, then why are you not competing in Battle of the Bands for Waka??? Oh yeh...It might require more than just bitchin' and moaning. Go ahead and stay home while the rest of us dance and party on the beautiful mountain top. :-)

Only thing I would say (if I'm a band) is to not take a check...

So unless you're in a successful band you can't comment on bands and musicians? I guess that you also believe that unless you're a politician you can't comment on politics, huh?
Posted by: live music fan | January 13, 2012 at 03:17 PM
Could I pop off and make derogatory comments about good local folks who are happy because they just snagged a good gig? Yeah. Sure I could.
Would it be cool? Nope.

Blitzen Trapper, Heartless Bastards, Dirtfoot and Girl Talk all sound good, never been to into Primus, a little to out there for me. Heartless Bastards rock, they are not to be missed!

It appears to be my worst nightmare come true...
OMG RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!!
IT IS THE MOTHER OF ALL MELLOW FESTS!!!
Life as we know will never be the same.... soon.... food wont stay down, skin will flake off, hair will fall out, runny stools, feeling sickly...
It is the end of the world as we know it... time to stock up on oven bags, elastic bands, tubing and helium tanks.
I prayed this day would never come, but it appears all wrning were ignored... and now..... now..... RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!!
Posted by: Worst case scenario | January 14, 2012 at 04:54 PM
Mellow Fest, did you even read the band names, these aren't mellow bands at all. Heartless Bastards, Dirtfoot and Girl Talk alone will get you moving.
Posted by: Green | January 15, 2012 at 11:56 AM
post a couple of youtube links showing how they are not mellow crappers.

YOU GOT IT PAL.

PRIMUS:

PRETTY LIGHTS:

And with an average attendance running around 20,000 I imagine shit will NOT be mellow. But if you're still not convinced we don't mind you staying home alone with you Disturbed records trying to de-mellow.
Posted by: Aaron | January 15, 2012 at 07:29 PM
Oh 20,000 people will be there?
SOooo IT MUST BE GOOD!!... yeah... ok.
fyi- electronica, BS noise(s) made on computers is... ah never mind.... fk this world.
Posted by: aron | January 15, 2012 at 10:39 PM
Well done Aaron. DT, you honestly consider Primus or Umphree's mellow? I think you maybe banged your head one too many times?
Posted by: NEW | January 16, 2012 at 09:24 AM
Heartless Bastards played the recordbar awhile back, maybe one of the loudest shows I have seen there, Local H takes the loudest band prize. Listen to the link below, not mellow at all.

I lump StageDJs/ sht music/ computer generated electronica and mellow crap... all in the same barrel... and that is what this line up looks like, a barrel of crap.
Have fun in arkansas NEW, this sounds like your type of show.
Posted by: roar | January 16, 2012 at 07:23 PM
Actually, it is, DT. I certainly take no shame in admitting that just as you take no shame in drawing conclusions about bands that you know nothing about or never bothered to listen to.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess you never even listened to the Primus or Umphree's links that Aaron was so kind to provide since you still lump them into the mellow fest genre. It's not DJs, its not computer generated and it's about as mellow as Cream was when they played live.
Posted by: NEW | January 17, 2012 at 09:11 AM
Yeah, I don't know a whole lot about Primus nor am I really much of a fan of their music, but I will say they made a pretty positive impression on me as a live act when I saw them play the old HORDE Fest at Sandstone. Claypool tore it up and the band more than held their own along side the likes of other traditionally "mellow" acts like Crazy Horse and Big Head Todd & Monsters.
Posted by: pellboy | January 17, 2012 at 09:43 AM
Np doubt, PB. Claypool is one of the greatest bassists alive.
Posted by: NEW | January 17, 2012 at 10:55 AM
Who would you like to see at Waka, who would fit the bill as not being a mellow fest band, toss a lineup together, mainly the main acts, curious who you would book.
Posted by: Green | January 17, 2012 at 05:12 PM
My lineup: JJ Grey & Mofro, Dave Alvin and The Guilty Women, Chuck Prophet, Alejandro Escovido, Carrie Rodriguez, Band of Heathens, Tom Russell, Sarah Lee Guthrie with Johnny Irion, Paul Thorn, Gov't Mule, Todd Snider, The Blasters, Derek Trucks, Imelda May with Jeff Beck.
I would enjoy that...

Sweet. I want to be the first to preorder a ticket to the OTM Have You Ever Been Mellow? Festival
Posted by: pellboy | January 18, 2012 at 08:31 AM
Nice lineup, OTM. However, we could probably see most of those acts separately at Knuckleheads/Daveys/RB/Grinders separately and it would still less than a 3 day pass for Wakarusa
Posted by: NEW | January 18, 2012 at 09:19 AM
Good point, NEW. Lower cost AND much longer/better sets as well.
Posted by: pellboy | January 18, 2012 at 09:23 AM
Hey, don't rain on my festival line up! I am just the idea guy, I will leave the nuts and bolts stuff to the bean counters...
But that WOULD be a pretty cool festival wouldn't it? Say on some early summer Friday night and all day Saturday at the Crossroads. I can't think of any objections!
Posted by: onthemark | January 18, 2012 at 10:46 AM
The line up is awesome, OTM. No issues there. And way to stir that pot! But it's only January. Isn't it a bit early for a Grinders incident? Shouldn't we at least wait for a Grinders concert announcement before crossing into dark territory?
Posted by: NEW | January 18, 2012 at 11:24 AM
You would not be inferring that I am chumming the water with troll bait now would you???
HA! No, I just threw that out there for consideration. Maybe a festival at the Liberty Memorial or some other wide open space. Just blue skying the scenario at this point, I am no concert promoter, just a live music fan.
Posted by: onthemark | January 18, 2012 at 11:52 AM
With that line up you might even get Dave Alvin to play with brother Phil! I'd just add one more to the list, Richard Thompson. I'm really jonesing to see him play electric soon...
Posted by: joe | January 18, 2012 at 01:04 PM
If I had the money to travel for a fest, I think this one is much much better....

Speaking of Further, how come they NEVER play Kansas City?
Posted by: pellboy | January 18, 2012 at 01:32 PM
As evidenced on this blog PB, KC is not a Dead/jam friendly town. As I have noted before, bands like WSP who have sold out the 9,000 capacity Red Rocks 32 consecutive times (usually 4 night stands)can not even sell out a single show at the Midland. It's also no coincidence that Phish does not play here either. That last Dead related show, which was Phil and Friends at the Uptown in October of 2007 did not even sell out. The guy sells out 3 nights at 1st Bank Center (capacity 7,000) can not even sell out the Uptown.
I am not saying there are not Dead/jam fans in the KC area. I think I know all 17 of them.
Posted by: NEW | January 18, 2012 at 02:26 PM
Oh and by the way PB/OTM, y'all should come by Mike Kelly's Westsider on Sat if you're not busy. There's a great band playing there that is right up your alley. I forget their name but great alt country/mellowfest stuff. The fiddle player alone is worth the trek.
Posted by: NEW | January 18, 2012 at 02:30 PM
Yeah, KC area was okay as far as jam bands go when that scene was en vogue 10-15 years ago, but it does seem that interest dropped dramatically over the years since. Kind of hate it that I'm always forced to drive up to Lawrence to see one of my faves...moe. Feb.12 @ Liberty Hall btw right after, you guessed it, two SOLD OUT shows in Boulder.
Posted by: pellboy | January 18, 2012 at 03:48 PM
Apparently, when the jambands look at a map of the US, they play Denver and call it good for all places between the Rockies and the Mississippi River. Gotta give Panic credit though. Even though they don't sell out The Midland, at least they come to town.
Posted by: Big Joe | January 18, 2012 at 04:08 PM
Agreed, Big Joe. I have Denver friends who love those shows strictly because of the intimacy of the venue.
But for the most part, I think it's a matter of economics for most bands. Why make a KC stop where they may sell 1,500 tix when they can use that date to add a show to an already sold out Denver or Chicago run and sell 15,000?
