Geordan

I know I'm jumping to September, but I just saw on Knuckleheads calendar that Nick Lowe (!) will be there on Thursday, 9/27! Holy #@$%!! Have always been a fan, but only saw him once when he opened for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers back in the early 80's with a band that included Paul Carrack. Anyway, that's a must-see show. As for July, not a bad lineup. I am kinda bummed about getting a ticket to The Bodeans show at Knuckleheads in a couple of weeks before knowing that longtime member (and singer of my favorite songs by the band) Sam Llanas quit the group last year.

Hey Geordan, Nick Lowe put on a fine opening solo set for Wilco at The Uptown!

Greg

Sam Bush and Kelly Hunt are playing a free show on Friday night in Olathe. It'll be hot, but I predict a good time.

kcmom

July 18th @ Knuckleheads...John McEuen (of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and the guy who taught Steve Martin how to play guitar) and his sons. I saw John's previous show at KH's...very entertaining guy! It's a CD release party for their new album.

July 19th, also @ Knuckleheads...Mike McClure and Micky and the Motorcars.

Geordan

Yeah, OTM, I heard about that show. Seeing live performances of Nick in the past few years on TV and Youtube almost got me to that show, but as I've stated a few times 'round here, I am not really that into Wilco. Like Radiohead (another band I'm not knocked out by), I like some of their material, but a new album by either band doesn't excite me all that much these days. Just my own personal taste, but Nick Lowe is still making great music and an acoustic show with him playing some great songs and telling some good stories between them, is really going to be cool. Unsure if he is touring with a band this time around, but he does a bunch of solo shows, so we'll see. Lookin' forward to it.

corky

Nick Lowe at Knucks!

Did that just now show up on the calender?

I'm a big fan as well

Geordan

It's on the websites' calendar, Corky, but not yet on the upcoming show section. I always check the calendar instead of the upcoming shows, as it is much more a complete listing. No ticket info yet, but it should be on there soon.

Geordan, It would have been worth the bucks to just see Nick Lowe open for Wilco. I was REALLY impressed with how well he did with just an acoustic guitar. Wasn't sure how that would play out and it was fantastic. Only disappointment with his acoustic set was that he didn't play Cruel to be Kind only to be blown away by the final Wilco Encore seeing Nick come out and realizing that they were going to play it full band. One of the best Encores I've ever seen.

As it is, I saw one - maybe two shows on this list that I might be interested in. Regrettably, this may be the first July that I didn't attend any concert(s) in years. This miserable humidity is part of the reason that I passed up on DREAM THEATER last week at Starlight. I haven't seen them in years. Plus, the opener CRIMSON PROJEKT would have been okay to check out (I'm sure).

Kien ikun jiswa l-bucks għal ftit tara Nick Lowe miftuħa għall Wilco. I kien verament impressjonat bil kemm kien mal biss kitarra akustika. Ma kienx ċert kif dan se jilagħbu barra u kien fantastic.Unsure jekk huwa touring bi strixxa din id-darba, imma hu ma mazz ta 'juri solo, hekk aħna ser tara. Lookin "jgħaddulha.

My only time seeing Nick live was w/ band way back in the day at The Lone Star and it was great. I will definitely attempt to hit this one.

Sorry to hear that Llanas won't be a part of that BoDeans show as I was strongly considering going to that and reliving my old Parody Hall days. Is he part of the new album that was released a couple of weeks ago? Maybe I'll give that a listen before deciding whether to go or not.

Also make note that I believe Split Lip Rayfield will be playing for free as part of that Crossroads Block Party tomorrow night.

Geordan

From what I've read, Llanas is not involved with the new BoDeans record, Pellboy. I still may enjoy the show. You mention Parody Hall and I wonder today how many shows we were probably at on the same night. I saw the BoDeans at Parody Hall twice and then once at The Uptown with The Smithereens opening. Great show! As for Nick Lowe, I saw on Knuckleheads site this morning that tickets are $29.00 in advance and go on sale on 7/15. It will be a solo acoustic show.

As for Knuckleheads, saw that Leon Russell will be back on Saturday, September the 1st, so I may try to catch him this time around. I did pick up a ticket for Paul Thorn with Samantha Fish in November, and a ticket for the great Dread Zeppelin, who will be there the night before my birthday in September. Always a fun band to see live. Kinda wanna catch Fitz & The Tantrums at the Crossroads tonight, but with 104 degree heat today, that just ain't gonna happen. I envy the brave souls who make it down there tonight.

pellboy

Porbably did cross paths then as I saw them twice at Parody as well. Any word then on that new album, "American Made"? Almost picked it up the other day at Best Buy as they were selling it on the cheap ($7?). Still could be a good show, I guess.

Funny you mention Fitz as I scored a couple of freebies so I'm going to brave the Dump and the heat and go down there tonight. Like their retro sound and am kind of hot for Noelle Scaggs so what the hell.

Not a bad price for Nick, I'm probably in for that. Usually not much of a solo acoustic concert guy, but a classic artist like Nick works for me.

onthemark

Geordan and PB, if you ever saw The Morells at Parody Hall, then we crossed paths back then!

pellboy

Oh yes, definitely did some Morells.

Gosh, I miss Parody Hall and the Morells!

onthemark

Musicgal, last time I saw them Donny, Lou and Rongo were playing as 'The True Liars' backing up Brian Capps. They have not played the KC area for a while.

I had some really good times at old Parody Hall!

Geordan

My first show at Knuckleheads in 2005 was the only time The Morells ever played there, as far as I know. A tour called "It Came From Springfield" which included Brian Capps, The Domino Kings, The Morells, and The Belairs (who come from Columbia, MO, but had just recorded an album produced by Lou Whitney at the time). The bands still played on the stage that was on the caboose, which changed that next year. That show began my love affair with Knuckleheads and the place just gets better every year.

Anyway, that was a good show, but I recall that it started at 7 PM and I when got there at 6:45 and The Morells (2005 version) were already playing. I caught about 45 minutes of them and was surprised that they played first. I did pick up the CD they released that year, called "Think About it" and it's really good. It wasn't "Shake And Push" but still fun stuff. Anyway, like those here who were there, Parody Hall provided KC music fans with many, many great shows, both on 39th street and down in the City Market area.

I used to go to Parody Hall every Tuesday night (I think) to see the fabulous 4Sknns. Dang, I can't believe I used to go out on a regular basis during the week. I was such a whippersnapper. Plus Fools Face would swing through Parody every month or two. However one of my favorite bands at the "new" Parody Hall in City Market was The Phones out of Minneapolis. They covered several tunes by the great 60's band the Sonics like Have Love Will Travel and Psycho. Great tunes, great vibe.

Geordan - I too saw Nick Lowe open for Tom Petty in the early 80's at Municipal Auditorium. One of my first concerts was seeing Nick Lowe in Rockpile at the Uptown. The lineup was Rockpile, Mink DeVille and Elvis Costello & the Attractions.
