'Bout the only way that anybody from the late, great Oasis band was comin' to Kansas City (and hopefully, St. Louis).

Had to do a road trip to Atlanta, GA to see Oasis perform at the Midtown Music festival over ten years ago when the group was at its peak, and it was worth every gas/lodging/food penny spent.

Oasis actually played Memorial Hall on February 23, 1996. It sold out while I was deciding whether or not I wanted a ticket. A Brit music journalist from NME or one of those mags flew over did a piece on the show, as I recall reading it. They made mention of Oasis playing more than just the five or so cities many of those bands would play and call it an actual tour. That's why I never saw one of my favorite underrated Brit bands, The Wonder Stuff, back in the day. They would play about five cities on the coasts and maybe Chicago and would head back home. Anyway, Oasis did make a trip here, which I respect.

Not to digress, but I also read a story in some other British mag several years ago on The Strokes, when they played the Uptown here while touring their second album. I actually went to that show and The Strokes did not live up to the hype (for me, anyway). They weren't bad, but were also not going to save Rock Music either. But still, the lazy Brit hack wrote about all the Cowboy Hats and the hillbillies he saw at the show who couldn't possibly grasp the subtleties and grandeur of that overrated band of trust fund dilettantes. The article proved once again that many UK/European writers don't have a great opinion of any US city outside of New York, L.A., and during the Grunge era, Seattle.

Your piece on The Strokes' brief hype & glory run reminded me of something interesting about the Oasis concert in Atlanta back then.

We drove to Atlanta early enough to arrive the festival grounds and get a prime standing spot about ten feet from the stage.

The opening act was a up n' coming 'next big thing' band from Scotland called Travis (remember them? didn't think so), but we were so close to the stage that you could see Oasis lead singer Liam Gallagher sitting backstage, watching band perform and slightly bobbing his head to the music behind the ever-present granny glasses shades.

Travis' own lead singer/guitarist even gave a public shout-out thanks to Oasis after the last song for its support of his band throughout the tour.

As the late great Mel Allen would say, HOW 'BOUT THAT??!!
