Since these ticket-sale alerts are kinda like open threads, have any of you ever gone to see a band at the Kansas City Museum's summer concert series? Are they on the museum grounds or on the big field to the west? And what's the parking situation? Big crowds or small? Local band Run Little Rabbit is playing there this Friday at 7, so I was wondering what to expect.

I've always been curious about that myself, LMF. Was thinking about hitting next month's Grisly Hand show. Let us know what you find out.

KC Jones

I live just down the street from the KC Museum. They have a "stage" set up behind the museum (concrete pad with lighting truss over it). There is parking all along the street on the east, north and west sides of the museum. It's generally a pretty small crowd. Some of these higher profile bands might draw a bigger crowd, though. I have not been this year, but I think it's still as I described. Let me know if I'm right or wrong. :)

Thanks for the info, KC Jones!

Well, I actually went out to the Run Little Rabbit show on Friday. Apparently it was the biggest crowd ever for the Free Concert Series at the museum. My one-year-old daughter was putting on a dance clinic and introducing herself to about everyone there. I thought at one point that she was going to get up on stage and dance. There were a LOT of little kids there. The weather was perfect and overall it was a fun time. The music was good too! Of course, I'm a sucker for Americana songs on acoustic instruments.

Picked up my Nick Lowe ticket online this morning and noticed on Knuckleheads Calendar that Joe Ely is returning on 10/21, which is a Sunday. Saw him last time he hit Knuckleheads and he put on a good show. I mentioned to him that night that I saw him open for The Clash in KC years ago and he said he remembered it being at an outdoor venue with a zoo nearby. Bingo! It was at Starlight Theater in '85 or '86. Mick Jones had flown the coop by then, but to see Joe Strummer on any stage in this town was pretty cool, and although Ely wasn't what some of the punks at that Clash show were hoping for, I thought he did a fine job that night.

Went to that Ely/Clash show as well. Even sans Jones, a very enjoyable experience for me as it was my only time seeing Joe Strummer and/or The Clash live. I'm grateful that I saw it.

When I talked to Frank about Nick Lowe, he still wasn't sure on the Lounge or the main (inside?) stage. I guess it may depend on # of tix sold. I plan on going if available that evening.

The Lowe show is in September, so they could have it outdoors, if they wanted to. It would be better indoors, of course, as Nick and his acoustic guitar wouldn't have to compete with the trains. But to see Nick Lowe AND Marshall Crenshaw in the Gospel Lounge in the same year would be absolutely wonderful. I went ahead and also got a ticket for Uncle Lucius who are playing a separate show later that same night in September. I saw them in early 2011 or so and remember liking them. That's gonna be a cool night of music. Until then, I am looking forward to The BoDeans this coming Sunday with Miles Neilsen & The Rusted Hearts (Miles is the son of Cheap Trick's Rick Nielsen) opening. The BoDeans won't be the same without Sam Llanas, who isn't even on the new BoDeans disc, but they may just surprise me anyway.

I had a great time at the KC Museum on Friday. Great music by some lovely ladies at a beautiful little venue, and the little kids had me laughing all night long. There were some wild and crazy little boys running around but there were a lot of little girls who were listening to the music and dancing. It's too bad that Run Little Rabbit will be breaking up soon, since the fiddle player is moving to Wisconsin. Fortunately they had an EP for sale, and it sounds amazing! I wish that all recordings could sound this good.

I saw Blackberry Smoke at Knuckleheads last night. Yes, it WAS warm! Had a fairly large turnout, especially for a Sunday night. They put on a really good show, played from 9:15-11:15. I am not overly familiar with the band, but they played southern rock and I dig that sound. Not as much of a jam band as I had expected. They did do one jam song that managed to evoke both the Allman Brothers (including a stanza from Midnight Rider) and Little Feat. Tasty stuff, and the crowd was really into it!

Yeah, Geordan, even if moved to a bigger stage and with the weather still nice at that time, I got the impression that Nick's show might take place indoors for the reasons you indicated, less extraneous distractions.

Geordan

Glad you got to see Blackberry Smoke, OTM. I saw them a couple of years ago at Knuckleheads and only about 30 people were there. They are definitely a Southern Rock band playing in the old-school tradition. Almost made it up there myself last night to see them again.

Corky

Kicking myself for missing their show.

But, glad to hear there was a bigger crowd this time!

Frank just keeps packing the calender.

John McKeown & sons on Weds, Making Movies doing Santana on Friday, the BoDeans on Sunday(!)

And he is doing a killer street party for Los Lobos. Get there....
