I just saw that Robbie Fulks is going to be at the Record Bar this Saturday. Sweet. I've never seen him and I think I should.

I saw that about Robbie Fulks, as well. Always liked his music. Considering going to Old Crow Medicine Show Saturday night and maybe catching Robbie afterwards. But of course, if it's going to be another 100+ degree day, I may skip the Crossroads show. Also, the calendar here shows The 44's returning to Knuckleheads on 9/20. They are an L.A. Blues band and are damn good. Sadly, only about 8 people turned up when they played the lounge at Knuckleheads a couple of months back. Hopefully more folks will make this show.

How about Zombie/Manson and throw in J Devil in Topeka October 4th!

Saw Rush in November 1991 at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka,KS. It was their Roll the Bones tour and it ended up coming to Kansas City in May 1992 at Kemper. I wished I had waited because, it was freezing rain and snow and had a difficult time getting to Topeka that night.

So Zombie/Manson are skipping Kansas City and what's going on in Kansas City?

Thought about going to Robbie Fulks last night, but saw on his website that there was a misunderstanding about letting the public in, as the show was part of a wedding reception. Unlike Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, I didn't want to crash someone's wedding party. Maybe that's why his appearance in KC didn't get a lot of press......

Wow, weird about Fulks as I had thought about going as well. I did see the show listed in The Star's Preview section though, so it seems to me that it was sort of represented as a public show.

The Bodeans pulled a pretty good crowd of 200+ last night at Knuckleheads. The show was outdoors and thankfully the temperature dropped after the sun went away, because the first 30 minutes outside was a bit stifling. Miles Nielson and the Rusted Hearts opened with a cool 45 minute set of Beatlesque Pop. I liked their stuff and unfortunately, one drunk guy near me upstairs (I sat in that section on the roof of the place, looking down on the stage) yelled out, "You SUCK!" loudly after a song. Miles handled it graciously, stating, "Well, we have four more songs to try and suck less. But that's OK, we'll probably hug it out before this is over." What a cool guy, and again, a fine young band that hopefully will get some future accolades.
The Bodeans, were also really good last night. There are seven guys in the band now and the violin player, the keyboard/accordion player, and the percussionist added an fresh dynamic to their sound. They played for 90 minutes, including the encore, and "Angels," from their debut record, was probably the best thing I heard all night. Many of the new songs sounded good as well. "Flyaway" from the new disc stood out. During one song, a train rolled by and blasted it's horn as loud and as long as I've ever heard at a show there. It lasted for most of a song and afterward, singer Kurt commented, "Nice train solo! How are we supposed to compete with THAT??"
If there was any complaint, it would be that the vocal harmonies and interplay between singer Kurt Neumann and former member Sam Llanas was definitely missed. Those duties were shared by a few members of the band and none of them have Sam's unique voice. I also didn't like that The BoDeans play another favorite song, "Fadeaway," in a reggae style these days, although it still sounded OK live and got the dance floor hopping. They encored with "Still The Night" and "Closer To Free" and overall, The Bodeans are still a damn good live band. Nothing can touch those awesome early shows at Parody Hall, but Kurt Neumann has kept The BoDeans brand alive and well. It was a good show and the lively Sunday Night crowd should get an assist for that.

There's hope for a Bruce Springsteen show in Kansas City. I saw on Pollstar that he's scheduled a show in University Park, PA on November 1st. This new show looks like a start or end of a possible new tour leg.
