It's probably just me, but it seems like the music scene in the KC/Lawrence area has dried up. I read that list and there were only two mildly interesting shows, and I probably won't go to either of them. In 2008 and '09 I was seeing at least a show a week and had to skip some toward the end of months when I was broke, but 2010 was terrible, '11 wasn't much better, and '12 is back to being terrible. Is it the economy? Is it the high gas prices? Are other cities taking the shows that KC and Lawrence used to get? What's the deal?
Posted by: LiveMusicFan | October 02, 2012 at 03:00 PM
I agree LMF, I'd also note that Lawrence seems to be getting the better of KC.
Posted by: gsp | October 02, 2012 at 03:04 PM
I also agree. October looks pretty damn weak from my POV. Will do the English Beat and perhaps Todd Snider. Also the Parktoberfest dealy and thinking about the Pedaljets/Cher UK show at Davey's, that's pretty much it of interest to me. Sadly, at $55 for the cheapest seats, ZZ Top is just out of my price range.
Oh yeah, the venue was left off but Nappy Roots are playing the Riot Room on 10/22.
Posted by: pellboy | October 02, 2012 at 03:12 PM
Todd Snider!
Posted by: Musicgal | October 02, 2012 at 03:20 PM
In fairness to the list, I really don't get out enough anymore to really keep up with or go to alot of these local and small indy-type shows so my comment about a weak month of music may have been too strong. Unfortunately, I have to pick and choose my shows by factoring in such things as my availability, ticket price/cover and start time/night of the week and that seriously cuts down on my options. It sucks getting old and being "responsible".
Posted by: pellboy | October 02, 2012 at 03:32 PM
At my last job, one of my co-workers said that KC doesn't support artists. Some of the major shows sell well and some do not so, he's somewhat right.
I don't know about the smaller venue shows and it seems like some sell out and some do not.
There's more options for acts now with most smaller markets getting new arenas now. I'm going to be ticked off if Rush skips KC and they've always toured KC before.
I've read somewhere that KC lost more payroll jobs then, any other metro except for Atlanta.

Red Hot Chili Peppers play at Sprint Center on Oct 27th.
Posted by: Demian | October 02, 2012 at 03:54 PM
I have 3 for sure shows on my October calendar:
10/19-Jason Elmore, Trouser Mouse
10/23-Todd Snider, Knuckleheads
10/25-Grace Potter, Uptown Theater
Would like to see Norah Jones and ZZ Top but a bit too pricey for me. Considering Joe Ely at Knuckleheads.
Still, that is a LOT of shows to choose from, so get out there and support live music!
Posted by: onthemark | October 02, 2012 at 03:54 PM
Looking forward to some hoppin' Roots Rock with JD McPherson this Thursday night at Knuckleheads. Should be a fun show. Also looking forward to Norah Jones. She's not going to set the Midland ablaze or anything, but she'll look good trying. Sigh.....
Posted by: Geordan | October 02, 2012 at 04:10 PM
Sorry you feel that way LMF but it is you.
I count 137 shows on that list, which doesn't include Madonna, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Kansas w/Kings X. Don't think I saw Corin Tucker on there either and her new CD is supposed to be pretty good.
Likely the best show for the entire month will be Off! (Keith Morris-former Circle Jerks, and Dimitri Coats former Burning Brides plus the bassist from Redd Kross and the drummer from Rocket From the Crypt) with one of the best punk rock bands going... the Spits. If it ain't sold out yet...it will.
And given my name...I am a sure bet for ZZ TOP.

Dysrhythmia @ the Replay Lounge 10.22.12. Incredible, incredible instrumental band.
Posted by: Ronnie | October 02, 2012 at 10:41 PM
If you're a Springsteen fan, I highly suggest the Hudson Falcons show on the 17th at The Riot Room. They're like if Springsteen fronted a punk band. Solid, solid rock n' roll.
Posted by: -phil. | October 03, 2012 at 08:09 AM
Thanks for that tip, -phil, that might actually be doable for me. Funny you made that analogy as that was something I had always hoped Springsteen would do at some point in his career (probably way past that now)...put out a bare bones, garage-rock quartet record as it seemed like something right in his wheelhouse during his younger days.
Posted by: pellboy | October 03, 2012 at 09:49 AM
Yeah the Vegas era Springsteen schtick is getting really old.... "Oh look at us, we play boring songs for 3 1/2 hours" Y A W N !
Bwucey would be a lot better if he stripped it all down and actually kicked some ass for 2 hours versus these marathon Vegas act mellow fest he does.
Posted by: Spock | October 03, 2012 at 10:00 AM
Heaven help this retard-Spock/DT.
Posted by: Diagnosis | October 03, 2012 at 10:39 AM
Heaven help me as I have nothing to add but personal insults about people I do not know, I am a retard.
Posted by: Diagnosis | October 03, 2012 at 11:16 AM
I actually tend to agree with Spock on this point and I am as big of a Springsteen fan that there is. But a two hour kick ass/ Green Day type of vibe would be cool from Bruce. I think he could still do it. Stevie Van Zandt would be all over it... Bruce, Max, Stevie, Roy on keys and Garry on Bass. They would tear it up even today.
Posted by: Joe | October 03, 2012 at 11:37 AM
But I will add, Spock, that while there are parts of the 3 1/2 hour show that might fall into your mellow category, he does still rip it up pretty well for a significant portion of the show.
Posted by: Joe | October 03, 2012 at 11:39 AM
Well, we all know that Spock/DT is just trying to stir things up. I have to agree with Joe, a lineup of Bruce, Garry, Max and Roy would be very cool!
Would also like to see the ESB do an album of cover songs that you would hear on 'Underground Garage'!

the lindsey buckingham show in November has my interest
Posted by: scott | October 03, 2012 at 12:52 PM
BUSTED- I knew it was otm pulling that crap, but held back blahing at him, until he returned to the scene, acting all innocent.
If you have a point then post it, but dont just make personal insults and dismiss opinions/posts only to come waddling in later to debate it, that is beneath you.
Right on Joe. Thumbs up.
Posted by: Spock | October 03, 2012 at 01:39 PM
I am looking forard to First Aid Kit at the Granada on 10/9 which will be a very stellar, underrated, under-the-radar kind of show. I wish I could go to Crystal Castles on 10/16, but we already have ticket for the Men's Soccer WC Qualifying match at LSP that night.
Posted by: Jeff | October 03, 2012 at 01:48 PM
Actually, in response to Springsteen "stripping down" his band, I was thinking more along the lines of non-E Street players and more of a "rental" situation, a guitar/bass/drums trio made up of guys from bands/sessions that specialize in a harder/faster/sparser sound. More like a Crazy Horse concept only with perhaps more of a simplistic punk/garage rock mentality as far as song structure/performance goes.
Posted by: pellboy | October 03, 2012 at 02:00 PM
Sure thing 'Spock', whatever you say. You crack me up dude!
Scott, definitely go see Lindsey Buckingham. I saw him at the Uptown a couple of years ago on the 'Gift of Screws' tour and he was phenomenal!
Posted by: onthemark | October 03, 2012 at 02:07 PM
Really looking forward Will Whitmore's show in Lawrence on Friday. Crossroads cancelled his show in August due to a storm that never materialized...great to see him back in town.
Posted by: db | October 03, 2012 at 02:27 PM
Yeah, otm is right, I saw Buckingham on the Under The Skin Tour just a couple of years prior and it was excellent. This one is w/o band, but should still be very good. Here's a Rolling Stone review/setlist from a recent performance in Austin...

Where/when is Lindsay Buckingham?
Posted by: Joe | October 03, 2012 at 04:54 PM
One of my favorite WTF moments at a concert was when I went to see Tina Turner at Sandstone back in the early 90's. Got tickets from work. Lindsay Buckingham opened and he played a fierce 50 minute set with plenty of Fleetwood Mac numbers. At one point, these young gals in front of me turned to each other and said, "This guy is really good, but why is he playing all these Fleetwood Mac songs?" I leaned in to properly educate them... Tina was great, but Lindsay was awesome.
Posted by: Joe | October 03, 2012 at 05:01 PM
"Trust me DT, err I mean Spock, I understand, I surely do."
So no more complaining about people changing names while you are doing it yourself? And... you will behave? and start being on time? Keep your voice down? stop farting so much? Sit up straight, stop biting your fingernails and wash behind you ears?
Then OK, you can have another chance.
Posted by: Spock | October 03, 2012 at 06:54 PM
GREAT Lindsay story Joe... that is awesome man.
Posted by: Spock | October 03, 2012 at 06:58 PM
That Lindsey Buckingham show is on a Sunday night, 11/4 at JoCo Community...
He's an incredible artist. Seen two of his Uptown shows as well as a date some years back at Sandstone.
As much as I too am not that fond of solo dates, this is one I'll be more than happy to see...
This tune is on the current setlist:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDbQGQAmXWg
He played it during his last tour, and it alone is well worth the price of admission.
Posted by: Corky | October 03, 2012 at 08:33 PM
Yeah, I caught that Sandstone Tina opening show as well and although way more knowledgeable about him than those young chicks, I must admit that he impressed as a solo act that night and was a big reason why I decided to see that first Uptown show in 2006. While I'd like to catch this one, the $50 "cheap" ticket will probably keep me out. On the plus side, I believe at JCCC shows, the posted prices are the full cost as they advertise no extra on-line service charges.
Posted by: pellboy | October 04, 2012 at 08:08 AM
But when are they going to post the nominees to the tourist attraction Cleveland so we can cut and paste our bitching comments from last year?
Actually, Factually I am impressed they did not, hope they do not, mention that tourist trap. It is not worthy on being mentioned on the Holy Ground that is BTR.

JD McPherson threw a sweaty, old-school Rock & Roll party at Knuckleheads last night. I wasn't sure what to expect for a turnout, as JD just has the one album out, but apparently the buzz is on, as he filled the place playing the indoor stage. The joint was filled with local music lovers, drunken groups of eight (or more), several Knuckleheads regulars, and more than a few members of KC's Rockabilly intelligentsia. There was a Rumblejett here, and a Hepcat there, and I even saw Erin McGrane, AKA Ruby Falls from AlaCartoona. I know it was her, as my heart skipped a couple of beats when she walked past me and no Red Bulls or industrial-strength doses of Monster Energy Drink were involved.
It was a fun show and many massive cans of PBR were sacrificed by the thirsty crowd in the name of good old-school Rock & Roll. A last minute addition, The Domino Kings, from Springfield, Missouri, opened the show with a fine 45 minute set of textbook Roots Rock. I hadn't seen the band in several years and they did a good job, although not as energetic as in their younger years, but I can also say that about myself, so...Also, in the packed crowd, about 75% of the revelers paid little or no attention to these guys and talked loudly throughout their set. In fact, one table of four girls and two guys near the Merch stand, also talked and texted all through JD's set and never looked towards the stage once. Just makes me wonder why some people even show up for live shows.
After a short break, JD McPherson hit the stage at a gig that almost didn't happen. JD explained that three days before this show, the band's drummer broke his collarbone (after wiping out on a three-wheeler, which JD told me after the show) and this caused a problem, as he was to supply the van for the tour and couldn't drive and was in Rochester, New York. McPherson found a replacement drummer in Texas, who took over the gig on two days notice and zero rehearsals. Things worked out, as JD's 80 minute set (including encores) showed KC a star in the making. There was surprisingly little going on out on the dance floor until about halfway through the show and then once the dancers stepped up, the floor was mostly packed from them on.
KC showed JD much love as he plowed through his wonderful debut record, " Signs And Signifiers." The title track sounded good with it's Bo Diddley guitar sound, which reminded me of the guitar intro from The Smiths' "How Soon Is Now." He played a couple of fast, danceable tunes that stood out, which were "Firebug" and "North Side Gal." I also loved the slow groove of "A Gentle Awakening" which JD pointed out was important, as it is his mother's favorite song on his album. She apparently has awesome taste. JD ended the night with an inspired version of Chuck Berry's, "Carol." Overall, the crowd showed a lot of love to JD and his swingin' band, but once the dance floor started to rock, it reminded me of the shows I loved at Parody Hall eons ago. If McPherson puts out a second album as good as his first and continues to build his live reputation, he may be destined for a bigger venue when he next hits town. Crowd jabbering aside, I had a lot of fun last night and that's what going to see live music should be all about.

Geordan you really need to start your own blog. Not that I mind reading your comments here but I'd definitely subscribe to your blog too.

The nominations for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's Class of 2013 are in. This year's hopefuls are Albert King, Chic, Deep Purple, Donna Summer, Heart, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Kraftwerk, the Marvelettes, the Meters, N.W.A., Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Procol Harum, Public Enemy, Randy Newman and Rush.
Let the discussion begin!
Posted by: onthemark | October 05, 2012 at 10:29 AM
There no need for that crap on this holowed ground... The Star did us a favor by NOT mentioning that crap when it came out YESTERDAY... but OF COURSE, otm has to bring it up.
Everyone can feel free to just copy and paste their comments from last year.
Posted by: Not Needed | October 05, 2012 at 10:35 AM
Albert, DP, Butterfield, the Meters, Rush, Procol Harum...looks like some decent nominees this year. Not only that, but it will be decided via a public vote so I'm surprised you have an issue with this, DT. Or is it just our disdain for the RR HoF in general that prompted the response?
Posted by: NEW | October 05, 2012 at 10:41 AM
Thanks for the kind words, Endtro (and a hearty virtual fist-bump to my friend, OTM!). I've thought about a blog, but I'm a working Joe like most folks here and come here to give my impression of what I witness at the shows I see, just for the fun of it (and I do love to write). But I usually plow through what I'm writing and only give a quick proof-read before entering, so there's always a line, or a misspelled or missed word that makes me cringe after the fact. For example, I meant "then on" at the end of the third paragraph on this review. Anyway, I just hope my love of live music is apparent and that I can leave some kind of impression of what I experienced at a show or about an album I'm currently loving. Also, if I ever run into you at a show, I'll always buy you a beer or a shot, despite the fact that I never drink at shows, which is probably how I can remember so much. But thanks again, Endtro!
Posted by: Geordan | October 05, 2012 at 10:51 AM
NEW, it is actually DT's disdain for ME that prompted that response...
Got to admit, his claim of B2R being 'holowed(sic) ground' made me smile!
Posted by: onthemark | October 05, 2012 at 10:57 AM
I don't think it's a public vote per se, the public input will be one part of the selection though.

Nah, he hates you AND the HOF. Me, I'm indifferent about the Hall, just don't have strong feelings either way, but do hope that DP and Rush finally again as they deserve that "honor". Having said that, it seems as though at some point, darn near every act with a fairly lengthy will eventually get in. I mean, I have nothing but love for early Heart and Joan Jett and I don't doubt their influence on female rockers that came after, but were they ever really that great? Some of the other choices I'm even more baffled by. Seems more like the Hall of Decent to me.

Excellent job, Geordan. Thank you. I'm sorry I missed this show.

I know this is a local blog but I have to share this incredible lineup with you all (and it is an October event) This festival is also free and you can bring in your own food and drink (even alcohol). That pretty much covers the cost of airfare alone.

Oh Goody, next can we talk about The Branson music Hall OF Fame? and then The Hard Rock Cafe Hall of Fame? and then we can talk about all of other tourist attraction halls of fame because all of these tourist attraction deserve the same amount of attention as that thing in Cleveland.
