A group of touring musicians will be in town this weekend for three events that will include the screening of a music documentary about New Orleans.
It all starts at 10 p.m. Friday at the Brick, 1727 McGee, with a performance by Mark Southerland, Ashley Miller and Shawn Hansen of Kansas City and Chris Combs, Southerland's bandmate in the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey.
Berz is an improvisational drummer and sound alchemist from Switzerland. Hubner is an experimental sound artist/designer from Berlin.
At midnight, all seven musicians will collaborate for a set. Southerland said, “Friday’s show should cover a great amount of creative music ground, from songs that open up into improvisation to free jazz to noise improvisation, all done with great skill and craft by amazing musicians.”
Saturday in Lawrence is the first of two performances involving “Liquid Land,” a documentary about the music scene in New Orleans post-Hurricane Katrina. It was filmed in 2010 by Berz and Swiss filmmaker Michelle Ettlin. Berz was in New Orleans for a music project and to conduct concerts.
“Liquid Land” will be screened Saturday in Lawrence and Sunday in Kansas City. Each screening will also include live performances of music from the film. The schedules:
