I recently saw the CMAs and country isn't country anymore. It was hosted by Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood again. It was so slick and more like a rock award show now. Taylor Swift was performing with a Paris background scene. Carrie Underwood did Blown Away and she's like a second Shania Twain and is more of a rock act. Garth Brooks models his shows in tribute to Kiss and Brad Paisley models his shows in tribute to Van Halen.
It seems that most of the new country is from a modeling agency and gym now.

Although I really prefer Alt-Country/Americana, which is more or less Rock bands playing in a Country-style (Jason & The Scorchers, Old 97's, Rank & File, Drive-By Truckers, etc.), I still like some traditional Country, in addition to even liking a few songs by today's Pop/Country hybrid. But Kurt is correct in this assessment. To be a successful female artist in Country, you have to be attractive enough to do Cover Girl ads, although the popular male artists (Jason Aldean, Eric Church, and Toby Keith) still look like guys that would pick a fight with you at the local Waffle House. It's even sadder that Country artists that were popular 15 to 20 years ago, are now swept under the carpet and are now playing clubs instead of arenas.
Travis Tritt, Patty Loveless (her 2001 album, "Mountain Soul" and it's 2009 sequel, "Mountain Soul II" are both beautiful albums), Ricky Skaggs, Joe Diffie, Terri Clark, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Randy Travis, and Suzy Boggus (who was actually quite good when I saw her at Knuckleheads a year or two ago), to name a few, are now nearly forgotten. Even Faith Hill, Martina McBride, and Garth Brooks seem to be playing in Country's 'senior-league.' Come on, now. Taylor Swift is now the queen of country? Sugarland and Rascal Flatts are packing arenas? Oh, and what is up with the guy's hair in The Band Perry? Also, take that stupid cap off, Zac Brown! You're BALD, deal with it! Sheesh, somewhere Johnny Cash is surely spinning in his grave, while Willie Nelson tries to smoke the pain away.....

"Country" is nothing more than pop music with a (often fake) twang. It is no less manufactured than Beiber or One Direction or whatever the ilk of the moment being shoved down the collective throats of America's mainstream music listeners.

I've posted this formula before but this seems like a good opportunity to repost:
How to Mold a Pop Country Star by NEW:
Ingredients:
1 Sleeveless T- Shirt
1 Black cowboy hat
1 Sort of decent looking dude whose voice isn't really great but doesn't suck
1 30 day trial membership at 24 Hour Fitness.
6 killer Nashville session guys who really need the work.
1 Nashville songwriting team out of downtown songwriting factory
Directions:
Throw dude into gym for 30 days.
Have schmaltzy songwriting team crank out 12 generic songs.
Get 6 killer studio musicians to record back up tracks generic songs by offering them big bucks
Put sleaveless shirt and black hat on dude after he comes out of the gym after 30 days and have him do mediocre vocal tracks. Make sure he only shaves once a week.
Release record.
Have dude with killer band back up Kenny Chesney on upcoming tour.

While that formula may work for some people, Eric Church and Eli Young Band have been at this for a while. I don't think any country fan can argue that most of what comes out of Nashville isn't really that "country" anymore...but part of the problem is what is in the rock and pop world is so far away from actual music with a guitar and instruments, they end up in the country genre. Will be a fun show...
