For those latecomers to AMC's "Mad Men," frantically trying to catch up with the DVDs before the series starts up again on Sunday, here's the skinny on the theme song. It's an edited version of RJD2's "A Beautiful Mine." The song in its entirety is above; the credits over which it plays are below.
Volume 1 of "Mad Men: Music from The Television Series" came out in June, and it includes music by Ella, Vic Damone, Bobby Vinton. Like the show, it's swell, swanky stuff. It's available on iTunes.

One of the finest singers on Tuesday's "American Idol" was a kid named Sundance, who turned out to be the son of 1960s blue-eyed soul singer Roy Head.
In 1965, Roy had a big hit with "Treat Her Right," which was kept out of the top spot that particular week by the lads from Liverpool. Nonetheless, "Treat Her Right" has been covered by everyone from George Thorogood to Jesus Christ Superfly.

There are precious few rock songs in this world that are good no matter who sings them. Prince's "Raspberry Beret," for example, has been covered by everyone from the Derailers to Warren Zevon's Hindu Love Gods.

Faith Hill reacted poorly to getting beat by "American Idol" Carrie Underwood at the CMAs on Monday.
Or did she?The story from USA Today:
Hill, a nominee for female vocalist, was on camera along with fellow contenders Sara Evans, Martina McBride, Gretchen Wilson and Carrie Underwood. When Underwood was announced as the winner, the camera caught Hill with arms raised, as if poised to accept, then a split second later mouthing a surprised, "What?" Sandra Westerman of Borman Entertainment, Hill's management company, says Hill was just joking and didn't know she was on camera: "She would never disrespect one of the other artists."
An awards show broadcast to millions of households, and she didn't know she was on camera? Riiiiight.
Then we received this statement from Faith Hill at 10 a.m. this morning:
“The idea that I would act disrespectful towards a fellow musician is unimaginable to me. For this to become a focus of attention given the talent gathered is utterly ridiculous. Carrie is a talented and deserving Female Vocalist of The Year.”
Followed immediately by a statement from manager Gary Borman:
“I’ve worked with Faith for many years now and the idea that she would ever insult or undermine another artist, let alone another human being’s success is absolutely preposterous. Those who know her know that she’s incapable of such actions. She was being playful while the nominations were being read and playful after.”

The New York Times' David Carr on Monday questioned John Mellencamp's selling out to Chevy.
"Our Country," the latest single from the artist formerly known as Cougar, is the theme to the company's latest ad, being played ubiquitously during commercial breaks of recent televised sporting events. It's off JM's forthcoming album, "Freedom's Road," due in February (it's his first in five years).
On the one hand, the ad is more than a little creepy, especially when it tries to connect the troubles of an SUV-dealing American automaker to the 1960s struggle for Civil Rights.
On the other, if you can't get airplay on the radio or "Veronica Mars," what's a middle-aged recording artist to do?
