A former J-school buddy (Mizzou) turned lawyer and a big Pink Floyd fan went to the D.C. area last weekend to see Roger Waters revive the sounds of Pink Floyd. You can read Patrick J. Doran's comprehensive and succcint account, with full set list here: PINKFLOYD. Coincidentally, a grad-school buddy (KU) now working in D.C. went to the same show and gave it a thumbs up, too.
Byrd droppings
A writer for the Guardian weighs in on "There Is A Season," yet another box set from the Byrds. He is candid and dead on.
Year's best, so far
If you're looking for some kind of critical consensus on an CD before you buy or download it, visit Metacritic. It's not exactly scientific, but it gets across the basic idea of whether a record is good, awful mediocre or so off-kilter reviews are all over the place. The site keeps track of the albums with the highgest/best reviews. So far this year, here are the 10 best albums. Except for TV on the Radio, I don't see any of them making my top 10 for 2006:
1) Savane / Ali Farka Toure (2) Tropicalia: A Brazilian Revolution in Sound / various artists (3) Modern Times / Bob Dylan (4) Return to Cookie Mountain / TV on the Radio (5) Fishscale / Ghostface Killah (6) Destroyer / Destroyer (7) DFA Remixes: Chapter 1 / The DFA (8) Sno' Angel Like You / Howe Gelb (9) The Letting Go / Bonnie Prince Billy (10) I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass / Yo La Tengo
yeah truly a great site.I really enjoyed my visit.
