The first evidence appared on the Leo Project's MySpace page, where they announced that Saturday's show at the Hurricane, 4048 Broadway, had been canceled. Then the band Sidewise announced at it MySpace page that tonight's show at the Hurricane had been moved to Danny's South.
So we called Jon Lunkwicz over at the Beaumont Club and he said the Hurricane closed early this week because the person who owned much of the sound equipment in the place took it back, for reasons that need confirmation and elaboration. We're trying to get a hold of the club's owners. Stay tuned...
right...the guy went and opened
a swingers club and stiffed the
other owners for big bucks.
Hurricane was an institution..
but downtown is killing westport
and could spell the end to that
district.
what a shame...we all remember
the hurricane in its glory days
with great times and saturday
afternoons with the bonton band...
the one owner who stole the
equipment is a cheeseball and
can be found down at his
exclusive swingers club...
what a mess and a shame.

Plus: The Grand Emporium isn't doing any kind of live music anymore, at all, period. When a Starbucks goes south (literally and figuratively), you know the future is ominous.

honestly, though, when was Westport relevant to anyone other than UMKC and Rockhurst undergrads looking for a cheap drink?
Regardless of a Starbucks, Westport will always be around. I could care less if the Hurricane goes down. Even in its heyday, it was never a place I enjoyed going; it's not a great music room at all. If someone with any sense of promotion and organization (and not just a desire to spend all of their budget on flat screen TV's) would manage it, it could do really well.
Also, where is this swinger's club? The wife is feeling frisky.

ya Westport isn't dying because of downtown and shows in Westport will only be cool as long as the Record Bar maintains. If a venue would book good music, meaning less metal/hardcore crap people would come to the shows. I'd like to see an update from someone using their real name too.

Supposedly it is now open as the Riot Room.
Hurricane has for some time welcomed all genres of music. Off the top of my head I recall seeing Guided by Voices, Widespread Panic cover band, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, and Reach at this venue.
I hope the new venue keeps this eclectic tradition.
Also, why can't KC support Downtown, Midtown, and Westport?
