Classic rock radio station KYYS (99.7) fired a bunch of on-air people this morning, according to someone who was there. Apparently a format overhaul is pending. We'll post more when we get it.
Please say it isn't so. I lived through the demise of KY102 but just barely and was elated when 99.7 reappeared. There is no other spot on the radio dial that compares. It's either too mellow or too hard. I'm a 58 year old lady who needs her daily fix of KY

Radio is dying a slow death.

Switch to satellite radio immediately! Kansas City terrestrial radio is the worst in the nation. All of the stations just keep shoving the 70s down your throats. Save yourselves, go satellite! Expand your horizons!

This is great! Hopefully, it will be a good format change instead of country or sports.

I gave up on 99.7 last year. The Dick Dale Show on 96.5 is much better.

Haven't listened to commercial radio in 6 months. Satelite Radio is everything it's cracked up to be. Did the trial period and will nexer look back!

I have not been listening to the station recently except for the Alice Cooper show in the evenings. I have switched to listen to 90.9 "The Bridge" as they play some very good local and national folk and rock music now. Maybe they will try to fill in more now if KY is lost.

Sorry, but one 'Classic' Rock station on the dial is more than enough. I loved KY in the mid-Late 70's, but they stopped evolving around that point. There is still great music being made in the Rock Genre (and I'm not talking about Emo bands or pseudo-Metal like Puddle of Mudd, or Nickelback), but you'd never know it because these dinosaur stations feel we need to hear the likes of Styx, Bob Seger, Boston, Pink Floyd, Foreigner, etc. etc. for the 22,000th time.
RIP Max & Tanna........you should have stepped down many years ago as you and KY are the reason for the repetitive stasis that is KC Rock Radio circa 2008. 101 the Fox at least played a better variety of Classic Rock and if I'm feeling Nostalgic, I'll tune in once or twice a year. But even in my Mid-40's, I still love Rock Music and don't believe it stopped being good in 1978. This is truly a step in the right direction for KC. 'bout time........

This is what media consolidation gets you. Too bad no one has been paying attention :(
Don't hope for a classic rock format if they decide to change things. You're going to get more kiddie rock and Britney.

Maybe they will put a good Mexican music station on FM . Go Sambia!!!!

Funny you say that because they barely beat out Regional Mexican on AM... less than a point I know.

Your right, nothing would be better than music that sounds like the chicken dance 24 hours a day.
Posted by: Big D | January 10, 2008 at 04:49 PM
Puh-Leeze, no Tejano or Mexican Music! It's Polka with a Latin twist and NOBODY really wants to hear that up here in EL NORTE. No matter how loud you crank them up, Accordians will NEVER be cool! I'd rather listen to a 24-hour station dedicated to the collected musical contributions of Yoko Ono than Mexican Music, which is like reggae in it's repetitive nature. If it's playing over the loud speakers at Ponak's or Manny's, well that's OK......but only then.
But at least KY is History...Thank God!!

Geordan,
Are you really that passionate about losing a 34 year old radio station when you have so many other choices? iPods, Sirius, CD's, etc...? Sounds like some pent up frustration about something. "KY is History...Thank God" a little dramatic I'd say. Something tells me Van Halen, Stones, U2 music is still out selling and out touring all your "evolving" new bands.
Posted by: Wadkc | January 10, 2008 at 08:04 PM
So what if Van Halen outsells a band like Wilco? That's not the point. People wanting to relive their youths instead of growing up will ALWAYS make money, Wadkc. It just that it actually HAS been frustrating to not have a station on the dial that will play bands like Wilco (and many other bands that are keeping Rock alive) unless you tune in way left of the dial at say, 11:30 PM on a Sunday night.
I actually enjoyed KY back in the mid-late 70's, but around that time, they refused to play ANYTHING after 1980 or so, unless it was a song released by one of it's core 70's artists. I just feel that one Classic Rock station is far more than enough for any town. For those who want to live in the past, have at it. I still listen to 101 the Fox once or twice a year, but as a Rock fan, I moved on years ago.

I'm 34 years old. Give me Pink Floyd, Led Zsppelin, Moody Blues, and Eagles over the crap rock currently played. The talent in those bands outshone idiots like the Dave Matthewes Band, 98 Degrees, Pearl Jam, or almost anything the 90's had to offer (one of the few exceptions being No Doubt). It's idiots like program directors that alienate the loyal listener.

KatherineS,
You make the common mistake of referring to artists like 98 Degrees and Dave Matthews (with the correct spelling on the last name, thank you) as all that Rock Stations are playing these days. I also cannot stand Dave Matthews and 98 degrees was a crappy Pop band from the early 90's that was NEVER played on a Rock station in this town.
If you like still enjoy music like Pink Floyd, Moody Blues (YUCK!), and The Eagles (Double YUCK!!), well, I'm sure 101 the Fox will give you all that you need. They played a wider variety of Classic Rock than KY, anyway. But I don't believe they "outshone" (is that even a word, darlin'??) bands in the 90's, or many of today's underground Rock bands.
Sure, they were good bands if you were a stoner in the 70's, as their music is aimed at that audience and I liked much of that music at the time (and I never took the brown acid), but after hearing the same songs over and over for the past 30 years, I can't honestly believe people still enjoy, say 'FREEBIRD', after the 17,000th time.
Unless you're a true reactionary like WADKC, who posts here, or many others moaning about KY's departure, you will discover that good music is still being released in the Rock Genre. A band like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, for example, is as relevant today, as Van Halen was in 1978, but you'd never know it, because Radio programmers feel it is safer to rehash the same old sh*t, instead of giving new bands a chance and actually expanding the listener's "palate". KY's demise is a step forward for many......sorry, but that's just a fact. Let's move forward, people.
Posted by: Geordan | January 12, 2008 at 09:03 PM
The Black Keys, 1990's, Whitestarr, Under the Influence of Giants, Stereophonics and BRMC... all good in 2007. As stated earlier. Don't kill a legacy station because of incompetent suits. You never get history back. (sorry, not so profound...)

Agreed.......
