Apparently Edison's recording of "Mary Had a Little Lamb" came about 20 years after a Frenchman recorded someone singing "Au Clair de la Lune," The New York Times reports. It was recorded in April 1860 on a phonautogram (above), a device that made sounds visible, not audible. But scientists recently converted the visual rendition to sound. You can hear the 10-second recording at The Times' site.
