Here's what Billboard said about My Morning Jacket's set at Bonnaroo this weekend. They'll be at the Uptown Theater on Aug. 18:
In one of the most anticipated performances of the weekend, Bonnaroo vets My Morning Jacket offered up a three-hour extravaganza featuring all but two songs from its brand new album, "Evil Urges." The first half of the show culminated with a rendition of "One Big Holiday" featuring Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett.
With Les Claypool, members of Gogol Bordello and Hammett conjuring the festival's annual "Super Jam" in one tent, and DJ Tiesto enducing thousands of drenched fans to pogo to remixes in another, MMJ returned with a horn section and a trio of classic soul covers for another set.
It began with James Brown's "Cold Sweat," which found singer Jim James wearing a cape and sliding across the stage, and was quickly followed by Kool and the Gang's "Get Down on It," and Bobby Womack's "Across 110th Street." The epic performance closed with a cover of Motley Crue's "Home Sweet Home," with comedian Zack Galifianakis adding an additional festive touch by appearing on stage dressed as Little Orphan Annie.
Has anyone picked up Evil Urges yet? I finally did the other night, and have made it all the way thru twice. While I'm relatively new to MMJ, it's not exactly what I was expecting (based on the title track and I'm Amazed). I'm probably headed to the show here in town this summer, but not sure I am too excited to hear "all but 2 songs from Evil Urges". Although the prospect of hearing Across 110th Street could be worth the price of the ticket alone.
One last question... when an artist (established or otherwise), decides to "explore a new direction", what makes it a success or even worse, a bust?

Hi, I was at the Bonnaroo show, and it was amazing. All 4 hours of it! Do not be afraid of the new album. YOU MUST go watch them live, then you will love the album. They are amazing, and if you have never seen them live, and you like music, to any degree, you owe it to yourself to see them. They put on an amazing show. Who else can play Sly and the Family stone, and kick it in the rain from midnight to 4 am? No one else but My Morning Jacket!
