It was a school night. That's one explanation for the woeful attendance at the Beaumont Club Sunday.
Tickets for the four-band bill were a reasonable $18. And the headliners, the Plain White T's, had one of the biggest hits of 2007, "Hey There Delilah."

Yet only about 250 fans turned out. It's a shame. There's a lot more to the Plain White T's than one song. And the opening acts the Cab, Meg & Dia and the American Life also had plenty to offer.
While the majority of their fans may be under the age of majority, the Plain White T's' sound is much older. It's appropriate that band leader Tom Higgenson bears a resemblance to a young Ringo Starr. His band's best material effectively apes 1964-era Beatles. Paul McCartney would surely approve of the unapologetic pop confections "1, 2, 3, 4" and "Sing My Best."
"I'm guessing you know this song," Higgenson noted in his introduction to his big hit. "You probably heard it 50 billion times on the radio." Fans dutifully sang along with "Hey There Delilah" one more time.
The audience wasn't as kind to Meg & Dia. The Frampton sisters' band sounds like a squeaky-voiced version of the Pixies. A bracing cover of Tom Petty's "I Need To Know" further confused the teenagers clustered in front of the stage.
The delightful Utah band might find a more appropriate audience next year. New material from a forthcoming album was even stronger than Meg & Dia's internet hits "Monster" and "Roses."
The man in the suit is Tom Higgenson of the Plain White T's.
Las Vegas act the Cab fared much better. Their sound splits the difference between Maroon 5 and Fall Out Boy. And judging by the excited screams they elicited, the Cab were the night's big winners.
Local band The American Life opened the show with a brief set of unpolished but promising pop punk. One of the group's seven members mentioned New Found Glory. Based on their effort Sunday, the American Life seems capable of achieving a similar level of acclaim. And they provided just one more good excuse to stay out late on a school night.
