The closer this evening was a Beatles song and not just any Beatles song. It was "A Day in the Life," the epic finale to the sea-changing "Sgt. Peppers" album.
Only Neil Young could bestow upon himself the authority to try such a gaudy stunt. How did it go? It sounded like a Neil Young jam, right down to the last screetch of feedback he scratched and scraped and clawed out of his guitar. And it fit right in with the best moments of a show that was punctuated with several sky-scraping peaks and deflated by a few tedious valleys.
Thursday's show was a make-up date. It was initially scheduled for Nov. 4, which was also election day in the United States. Young implied that the show was postponed solely for that reason, which is open for debate. Lukewarm ticket sales were another issue.
Whatever, he returned nearly six months later, and the change in dates might have slightly diminished the crowd size. About three-fourths of the arena was curtained- and fenced-off, and some seating discrepancies arose. For this show, apparently, the stage had been moved closer towards the center of the floor. That change in scheme consequently turned a few good lower-level seats into seats partly behind the stage. And some people weren't happy.
That problem appeared to have been fixed by the time Young took the stage around 9:15 p.m. He would play until a few moments past 11:30 p.m. -- a long show by nearly all standards. Within that time, he gave his fans plenty of what they came for -- like the spine-tingling solo/acoustic version of "Needle and the Damage Done" -- but indulged in several songs they didn't, like the five songs off his new record, "Fork in the Road."
It's hard to complain about a setlist that included so many treasures and major moments: "Needle," "Are You Ready For The Country," "Cinammon Girl," "Down By The River," "Pocahontas," "Heart of Gold," "Old Man" and "Tonight's the Night." Most were performed just the way everyone remembers them, and each prompted the usual: a big roar and a sing-along.
But the setlist wasn't built with momentum in mind, and none of those classics were stacked back-to-back-to-back. Consequently, the show had an up/down pulse to it that grew slightly frustrating.
The crowd was enthusiastic in varying degrees all night, but after the band had finished the proper set with "Just Singing a Song" -- the fifth "Fork" song and second in a row -- and was about to take a bow, someone in the band (Chad Cromwell, I think) mildly scolded the place for not being rowdy enough: "You need some caffeine?" he said, waving his arms to signal: More noise. No, how about ending with a song we've known longer than two weeks?
The sound started off rough but improved right away; and the video screens flanking the stage provided some nice close-ups of the action on stage. I suppose it's also worth mentioning there was a guy on stage behind Young, painting, but he became so superfluous, I didn't notice him after a while.
Overall, this show ought to be best known for its great songs and large moments and for all its quaint and dynamic embroideries: Young's woolly mammoth guitar leads and his performances on piano and organ; Ben Keith's pedal steel guitar; and the choruses of background vocals, led by Young's wife, Pegi.
Closing with a Beatles cover seems like a bit of a cop-out when you have a few dozen of your own great songs in storage. But Young managed to make that great song sound like one of his own, and when he does that, you can't really complain about it.
The Neville Brothers: They felt slightly out of their element in the arena, but they complemented Young's set nicely with their tradmark blend of New Orleans funk, soul and blues. One highlight: "Fever," featuring brother Aaron on lead vocals.

Setlist: Love and Only Love; When You Dance You Can Really Love; Fuel Line; Are You Ready For The Country; Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere; Pocahontas; Change Your Mind; Cinammon Girl; Mother Earth; Needle and the Damage Done; Light A Candle; Heart of Gold; Feel Your Love; Old Man; Hit The Road; Speakin' Out; Tonight's The Night; Down By The River; Get Behind The Wheel; Just Singing A Song. Encore: A Day In The Life.
I am amazed at Mr Young.
He is a legend to me now. He has proved over time to be one of the best no BS rock and rollers ever.
I was amazed at his show. I love hearing his real songs, heart soul and meaning and rock and roll.
The GA flooor was blast. I loved this show. He treated KC to a great night of Rock and Roll.

One of the greatest performers of all time! Neil Young is a living legend, and I enjoyed his new material. Closing with "A Day in the Life" made for a fabulous encore! Way to go, Neil! Keep on rockin' in the free world!

It was awesome hearing/seeing them playing extended jams, but I was sad when the mean security said NO VIDEO in KC, but it looks like someone grabbed some in Denver.
This is a taste of what we saw last night.

An incredible celebration of glorious noise by one of rock's true masters. "Change Your Mind" was a special treat.
Keep on Rockin', Neil!

Sorry to miss this but won't do this kind of show at Sprint-The show he did at Memorial Hall a few years ago is how I want to know/remember his performances. Left with my ears ringing!!!! Sing alongs? That is for the annoying DMB crowd!

FYI, the setlist is missing "Speaking Out" which I believe was just before "Tonights The Night".
Overall, I agree with Tim's review of the show. The last two songs before the encore were particularly lackluster and somewhat anticlimatic but it was nice to see last night's show deviate from other shows on the tour both in song selection and format (the acoustic set was way longer than other shows). What's interesting is that he is penalized for emphasizing new material. One of my first NY shows was the "Rust Never Sleeps" tour in 1978. Half the show consisted of material from that album that would not even be released until the following summer. At the time, many people griped about that as well. Now in hindsight, that tour stands out as one of the highlights of his long and distinguished career.

I went expecting to be disappointed, what with a re-scheduled show, promoting a suspect new album and the acoustics at sprint. I was blown away. Great band, great Neil and great sound. The new stuff sounds better live.

NEW,
Good point about the new songs. I didn't mind hearing them at all and I actually thought they were good songs and worthy of being in the setlist. Yes, anticlimatic is the right word. The show could have ended with a run of three or four of his classics that would have left me and most of the crowd breathless. Still, I really enjoyed the evening. Amazing how his voice has held up for so long.

First time seeing Neil.. he absolutley blew me away. He sounds as he always has. I didn't mind the new music myself. My lower level seats became a lot better because of them moving the stage!! I was afraid that because of the small size of the crowd he wouldn't stay on stage long. But.. wow he did!
I loved the Nevell Bros. also

Neil is what Rock n' Roll is all about. He puts his music out there if if people like it, great. If not, he goes on anyway.
I've seen him four times over the past 35 years and he sounded as great as ever last night in voice and on guitar. The band was much better than I anticipated.
You da Man, Neil! Keep on Rockin'!
Posted by: Buzz | May 01, 2009 at 11:21 AM
Funny you mentioned his voice holding up, Jose. I totally agree. What's funny the Tonight's the Night's version of "Speaking Out" is the epitome of late night wastedness. His voice cracks, he's slurring lyrics, you name it. You are almost expecting to hear the sound of a shot glass breaking in the background. I found last night's "clean" version refreshing although it loses something without the wasted 1970s SoCal undertones of the original.

Thanks for the fix on Speakin' Out. It is in my notes, right after "Hit the Road." Neil killed on piano., I just missed it. As for the new stuff: It may get better with age but I don't think it'll compare in any way with Rust Never Sleeps.
Posted by: Tim Finn | May 01, 2009 at 11:31 AM
I've seen many Neil Young concerts over the years in many venues. This was neither the best show I've seen, nor the worst, but I was disappointed by the set list. The playing was very good, even with newer and younger band members. Still I prefer Crazy Horse for a live Neil Young show. Clearly the latest CD, "Fork in the Road" is not his strongest effort. "Chrome Dreams II" was much more satisfying overall. Hearing several of the new tunes live didn't change my opinion much. I was pleased that he chose to polish off a few of his more obscure titles like "Feel Your Love" from the 1988 CSN&Y album "American Dream." It was great to hear "Pocahontas" from "Rust Never Sleeps." But I missed several old chestnut standards that he usually draws from in his shows like "Sedan Delivery" from the same album. Which brings up the disappointment so many in the audience seemed to have after the encore. They were expecting "Rockin' in Free World" and/or "Hey Hey, My My (into the Black)" which are anthems Neil usually plays. Personally, I was happy he traded off and played the lesser known songs but again the newer songs were only s0-so. I expected better from Neil since many of us really got cheated on this show. I even had problems with Music Today living up to sending my tickets I'd purchased for the show on the original presale. Then we ended up with seats way over to the side. But at least we didn't have to stand on the floor all night and jockey to see the stage. I am really getting annoyed at the way Sprint Center presents these concerts and the general sound quality. This show's sound was OK, the distortion was often intentional or deserved due to Neil's excesses with his Les Paul vs amp feedback forays. Finally, I'll just add that it was good to see him in good fighting form so to speak. He's one of the last of a fading breed and I treasure every time I see him play.

Fantastic show & full of surprises! Luckily, I already had a few favorites from the new CD, but I see your point about the momentum, Tim. With soooo many great songs,it would be really hard to put together a 2 hour list. His voice was mostly excellent, & that's amazing in itself. His lead solos were truly the work of a rock & roll wildman! The interplay between him and the drummer was amusing - Neil would walk around him while Chad watched carefully to see if Neil was really ending a song or going off on another tangent! As for ending with "A Day In The Life"... I really can't even come up with words to express how awesome it was! (P.S. - too bad, but the youtube clips don't get anywhere near what was actually being performed on stage.)
Posted by: kmoon | May 01, 2009 at 12:31 PM
Seems odd that even obvious lackluster shows (in terms of quality & quantity) at the Sprint Center will always get plenty of coverage on this blog, whereas the fantastic (such the Lamb of God, As I Lay Dying, etc at the Uptown Weds) occurring at other venues will get no coverage whatsoever. What a pity....
One must ask us it prejudice in terms of genre (which can be expected/understood), or prejudice for commercial/business-tie-in purposes (same ole' provincial KC)? Either way, with this approach the Star continues to sacrifice their music-interest viability with other groups/generations than those who blew up weed from 1965-1985.....
Come on, guys, broaden your horizons.

This show was better than memorial hall to the reader above. With the stage moved to half court, I actually felt the Sprint Center was "intimate". I know, don't flog me, but I really think the place warmed up w/ that tighter floor plan. Plus, my corner court seats($50 face) became awesome! Musically, Neils new material may not live up to the monster catalog he has. However, I think the material is as relevant as anything. Here's an aging boomer coming from a culture of freedom of the road, get in your car independence that is warning us of the calamity that we face as a nation dependent on cars. Many of you that I heard grumbling don't want to change or even hear someone speak of change. However, the writing is on the wall. Sage Neil is just putting it out there for you to chew on. Many of you will spit it out, but don't cry when the "I told ya' so's" begin. Godfather of Grunge, add Noise Rock to that as well. I can't help but look at Neil and see all the bands that have run w/ his style. He's timeless. Don't forget that noisy close to Day in the Life included Neil taking his shredded guitar stings and whipping them against the pickup on his guitar like some kind of mad scientist. Priceless! I'm just sad that I waited 12 years to see him again. Give me Neil over Dylan any day of the year.

Metalhead try not to get your black t shirt in a wad. But, we're talkin' Neil Young here, not Britney, Pusscat Whores, Clay Aiken, David Cook, blah blah blah. Besides, KC star can't sell press on metal, hell they can't even sell police blotter press. What makes you think they're going to get over to the sausage fest you call a metal concert.

We are so blessed to have Neil Young in our generation. There may have been good and bad elements to the night at the Sprint Center, but what does it matter?? Nothing can ever touch the Memorial Hall show from a few years back, but any Neil Young show is memorable for us Ordinary People. Please NY come back to KC anytime and often.

Can't disagree with this review, I pretty much thought the same thing. Been listening since "Everybody Knows this is Nowhere" came out and thought he did a great job on it. But I have 2 questions: 1) JUst who/what the heck was with the guy painting behind the band? I saw he was working on 2 canvases but that's all I could tell. and 2) the red telephone attached to the front of the drums. Is it there just for the heck of it so people like me will ask, or was someone expecting a call?

I thought the show last night was great! Yes I wanted to hear some songs he left out...Cowgirl in the Sand, Cortez the Killer, Like a Hurricane, Southern Man, Sugar Mountain, Helpless, Powderfinger, A Man needs a Maid...but he would have had to play all night to hear them all! All in all, I thought the venue was perfect scaled down as it was.

Chill Pickle:
Good point re: Star current issues, sad they may be...my comments were re: coverage choices rather than NY. One point of correction though, my T-shirt today is sort of a taupe color with tan accents rather than a ubiquitous black. One must always be careful not to fall into the lazy habit of stereotyping....
I certainly intended no 'dis to Mr. Young...seen him 3 times; last time was Ragged Glory. The guy can do things with a Bisby Paul that are truly unique and LOUD AS HELL. I bow at his feet.....
Keep on Rockin' in the Free World....
Posted by: MetalHEAD | May 01, 2009 at 02:42 PM
Agree with most the above comments, but this was my wife's first NY show and our 6 row off the floor seats were downgraded to 20 rows up, 2 sections back, with the people right behind us paying $50 less per ticket.

I've been waiting 35 years to see Neil. Ever since I took my joker out, opened the album up, cleaned what I had, and imbibed, while listening to Tonight's the Night, I was waiting for this. I was surprised at what I thought was a small turnout, for such an accomplished performer, but remembered that Neil is an acquired taste. As far as the setlist goes, he could play for hours on end and still not cover every memory. Fork in the Road is exactly that, just another venue, just another place in time that you remember, to be listened to. I just want to say, thanks Neil, but also, where's Carl? Well, he shot 4 men in a cocaine deal.....

Paul Fairchild - WHY would Sprint Center 'downgrade' you and your wife's NEIL YOUNG seats? Heard of upgrading but this was the FIRST time I've heard of seats being downgraded.
Posted by: Bubba | May 01, 2009 at 05:19 PM
OH, come on, you set list whiners. I wanted him to do the setlist which started with Mr Soul ( as he did in Omaha ) but facts be known, after ANY song got chugging along, and they start jamming, DOES IT EVEN MATTER WHAT SONG IT REALLY IS?
new>>>shcmew>>> who cares. I dont know the new album at all, but it all sounded great to me. NEIL ROCKS. I am amazed, and trust me, I will layu a band to waste if they suck,,but MR Young gave us a treat FKN-A!!
All the songs turned into rocking Neil Young jam ... I LOVE THAT SOUND .. I feel warm and fuzzy today:) ( could be the "too" much fun "wandering the GA floor ...WOOO HOOO!! ).
Neil felt the crowd, and turned it on, and we turned it up ...AND IT WAS AWESOMO!!!
Neil gave us more in KC cuz he love us, and we love him, YEEAAAHHH!
MR Young PLEASE come back soon,.
PS
I need to see this show again, did anyone get video .. PLEASE .. I HOPE!!
Oh btw ....my souvenier??
Neil Rolling papers ... LMAO!!! 4 books, and trust me they wont be used, I just thought it was so damn funny...

Niel & and the Band were never Tedious, Frustrating, and didn't Cop-out. Fork in the Road has been out for at least 4 or 5 weeks. As a paid professional journalist get your definitions & your time schedule right. As for Niel Young and whomever his Bandmates are. Long May You Run!!!!!!!!! Peace.

"No, how about ending with a song we've known longer than two weeks?"
I remember a time not too terribly long ago when an artist as reputedly "anachronistic" as Neil Young was almost expected to perform a good portion of new (and perhaps unheard) material in a show. Think "Time Fades Away". It seems that the shared expectation of many audiences these days is to simply be entertained with recitations of the familiar, as opposed to perhaps listening to and maybe being challenged by new music.
I didn't attend this show, but have seen Neil several times over the years, as a solo artist and with CSNY. The guy is a pro, and I believe he still delivers whatever kind of show his muse leads him to, expectations or not. Put him in another venue and I'll be back with my ticket money again.

to the people remembering the Memorial Hall show above, that was frickin 1989 people, not just a few years ago. Try a few decades ago. If you have not seen NY since then, you have simply deprived yourself of 20 years of awesome live Shakey performances, including the loudest most blistering tour he ever did, which was 1991 with Crazy Horse (as well as 95 and 96 which also were loud shredfests).
And the setlist for this show was outstanding. A 16 minute Change Your Mind? A 12 minute or so awesome Down by the River? Cinammon Girl--both Heart of Gold and Old Man? Opens with a 10 minute Love and Only Love? Tonights the Night? An electric Pocahontas? My God, what the hell do you want? It was frickin awesome.

I too passed on this one mainly because of the insane seating arrangement. They were "out" of fifty dollars seats but had plenty of nineties until the day of the show when the fifties came back to life. If you bought a ticket on wednesday it was 90 dollars, if you bought it on thursday it was 50. How strange. Also, Fork in the Road became of one of the few albums that has peoples opinion of it set in stone before it was released. A lot of people had heard most of the material at the end of the 2008 tour and word of mouth was it wasn't very good. Now most people had only heard it one or two times and mostly on audience tapes. That plus the rumor it was delaying the Archives set put it in disfavor quickly. Myself, material wise, it reminds me of Living With War which was put out with about the same circumstances. Quickly, about one subject and raw. He did a CSNY tour and dvd with that record. Rarely will someone challange you or just plain plays what he wants instead of the old favorites like he did with Greendale. Neil is just one of those.
Posted by: scott | May 04, 2009 at 08:35 AM
I saw him on Shocking Pinks, and wanted to kick someones ass I was so pissed. Then he paid us back IN FULL on the next tour, then he comes back with that Blue Notes stuff, but by the time he played Memorial Hall, he dropped the Blues notes stuff and it was ALL CRAZY HORSE claasics. He opend for himself with accoustics, and cames back electric and it was the best I have ever seen, he paid us even more. SInce Then I dont miss him.
GreenDale was a masterpiece, but no one listened to the warning, and now we are fkd....anyway...Thursday was one of the best concerts I have ever seen. If you misssed it, you made a mistake.
We bought GA tickets, day of the show, from "whomever", and had a blast.
I worry that I may never see a show as good as this one ever again. It was awesome.

Anyone catch The Last Waltz on VH1 classic monday? Neil and Joni Mitchell doing Helpless w/ The Band. Neil's aged a bit since, but he still sounds great. Those of you that missed because of Sprint venue, missed out. I'd attend more shows there if they continue to bump up the stage and tighten the seating. However, I'm sure that was just a function of ticket sales......

We watched this thing on HDTV called Hard Rock calling, I cant believe it has been a year already.
Freekin Neil Young. I wish he would come back and do the same show again, but alas, no way, it is gone. Hedoes not duplicate. I am hoping his new movie maybe captured a bit of the essence of what happened in KC that night, too bad they did not allow me to grab so video, cuz it all evaporated as it played
: ( it makes me sad.
