The Church show at the VooDoo Lounge on Friday has been canceled. You know the routine: Get your refunds where you bought your tickets. Sounds like maybe ticket sales might be the cause. There's nothing on the band's Web site and the cancellation caught some of the band's "people" off-guard. This arrived in e-mail around 11 a.m.:
i (just heard) from the church's agent that the show has suddenly been canceled. we were excited about your piece and apologize for any inconvenience. this was the first everyone heard of it as far as i know. i don't think we had any advance warning.
This is very disappointing. I know a lot of people who were planning to go, but I doubt many of them had advance tickets.

I'm glad I checked Harrah's site today. I was going to go and pick up tickets tonight. I saw them many moons ago at the Uptown, great show.

The Church's Steve Kilbey posted an apology on his blog:

I can dig it. Disappointing, though. It's not like there's some other band you can go see that sounds quite like the Church.
I strongly recommend the latest Church disk, Untitled #23, as well as SK's latest solo disk, Painkiller, for those in need of a gold afternoon fix.

In the whole scheme of things, it's not the end of the world, but for fans of this band (I bought my tickets the day they went on sale), this is a true disappointment, as I lamented in an earlier post elsewhere on these pages. The Church are such a brilliant and underrated band and as complex and adventurous as their recorded work is, they were (and on good nights still ARE) a powerful live band.
I have been a fan since I bought their debut album via import in 1982. I've seen them here twice in KC, and once in Chicago. Like MBuck, I really like the new Church disc and have my share of Steve Kilbey's and Marty Willson-Piper's solo work. I also picked up a new and really good (and possibly the ONLY) biography of the band on Amazon.com called, "No Certainty Attached: Steve Kilbey and The Church." If you're a fan, this is essential reading. Bummer about the show, though..............
