Local jazz pianist/virtuoso Mark Lowrey, who can get way more than just jazz out of the piano, informs us that on Dec. 11 (a Friday), he will orchestrate a tribute to Radiohead at the RecordBar. Lowrey was part of the band that re-created "The Wall" and he also organized his own Ben Folds tribute last year. Here are his early designs for Radiohead:
"It will be from "Pablo Honey" through "In Rainbows." Hopefully at least one selection from every major release. Unlike the Ben Folds tribute (which was an attempt to accurately re-do tunes), this will be an interpretive tribute. For example: I'm arranging "Idioteque" ("Kid A") as a Guaguancó (afro-cuban groove) with violin, cello, percussion and voice.
"Some confirmed, some unconfirmed musicians: Pat Conway, Brandon Draper, Barclay Martin, Shay Estes, Billy Smith, Laurel Morgan (and many others). It's probably going to be the most labor intensive project I've ever tried to put together. I'm excited and terrified."
Radiohead's material lends itself to new interpretations like this. Christopher O'Riley released "True Love Waits", a CD of Radiohead songs in classical piano style, which shows off the complexity of the music.
Should be an interesting project.

I like this, good job guys, keep posting stuff like this, finding out about the smaller shows is much more interesting than the bigger ones!

The (accidental or intentional) irony is that this show is happening on a Friday and Radiohead's original name was "On A Friday" because that was the day they practiced. I'm so excited! Musical Innovation is alive and well in this city.
