When he headlined at the Sprint Center in January, Lil Wayne was the music industry's premier artist of the moment. His show in Kansas City that night was appropriately spectacular. Lil Wayne went on to collect four Grammy Awards in February.
Although he's lost a bit of his luster, Lil Wayne's performance Monday at Starlight Theater proved that he's not about to fade away. An audience of about 6,500 witnessed an intriguing, if somewhat inconsistent, performance.
The night's definitive moment came midway through his 90-minute show. After Lil Wayne paid tribute to the Notorious B.I.G, Tupac Shakur and Jay-Z, a video screen proclaimed that Lil Wayne was "the best rapper alive."
Rather than backing up the claim by rapping, however, Lil Wayne grabbed a guitar as his band recreated a sloppy rendition of Aerosmith and Run-D.M.C.'s collaboration on "Walk This Way." The pop-punk "Prom Queen," the first single from his forthcoming rock album, followed. An unlikely Motley Crue-style foray into hair metal was next.
Arguments about whether or not Lil Wayne is the world's best rapper miss the point. His interesting choices Monday reveal that he's beyond rap. Lil Wayne is the most potent and intriguing force in all of popular music.
A monstrous bass boom occasionally overwhelmed it, but the mix usually leaned toward rock. Although relatively conventional versions of "Fireman," "Kush" and "Go DJ" were true to the originals, the night's best music came when Lil Wayne's four-piece band added interesting new rock-based textures to material like "Shoot Me Down". Set to video images of post-Katrina New Orleans, "Tie Me Down," was deeply moving. The fatalistic "My Life" was elevated by a gentle gospel groove.
While the show had many such powerful moments, it lost momentum when Lil Wayne showcased the roster of his Young Money record label. A few members of the collective are featured on the excruciatingly awful hit "Every Girl," which later served as the night's final song. Similarly, the appearance of Lil Wayne's mentor Birdman provided only a momentary thrill. It raises a difficult question: Is Lil Wayne's star power so bright that all other artists fade in comparison or is he simply a poor judge of talent?
When Lil Wayne proclaimed "I am an alien" during "Phone Home," few of his fans at Starlight probably disagreed. His boundless charisma, knowing smile, compact size, odd delivery and startling creativity set Lil Wayne far apart from most mere mortals.
Young Jeezy was all too human during his opening set. His music, for better or worse, represents the most popular glorification of urban thug culture. But he blew it. Young Jeezy never seemed to understand why he was booed and heckled. The street credibility he painstakingly established with chilling trap music hits like "Put On," "Go Crazy" and "My President" evaporated as the gravel-voiced star repeatedly referred to the deeply disappointed audience as "Kansas." (Lil Wayne made the same mistake.)
Soulja Boy knows better. He's more of a marketing genius than a musical mastermind. Accordingly, his hype man introduced the teenage star by citing the staggering numbers of ringtones he's sold, videos fans have watched at YouTube and followers he has at Twitter. Even though he was relegated to a lower slot on the bill, Soulja Boy's effort Monday was much more impressive than his turn as a headliner at Sandstone in June.
"I don't know about y'all, but I'm a star," Jeremih, the night's first act, proclaimed.
His unaccountably early start time- twenty minutes before the show was scheduled to begin- offered evidence to the contrary. He is, at least for now, a one-hit-wonder. His horrifically vulgar "Birthday Sex" is one of biggest songs of the summer.
Lil Wayne enjoyed his first hit in 1999. Consequently, it's easy to forget that he's just 26. He may not have dominated the charts this summer, but Lil Wayne is clearly going to play a leading role in popular music for a long time.

If Lil Wayne is "the most potent and intriguing force in all of popular music" then we're all fucked.

Question: does anyone (besides urban youth and gansta wannabees) really actually listen to rap music any more?
Posted by: Jeff | August 25, 2009 at 12:03 PM
I was there, my first hip hop show. He rocked. Even whiteboys got to shout.
Posted by: mothman | August 25, 2009 at 12:08 PM
Lil Wayne has absolutely no relationship to hip hop. Top 40 rap? Ok, sure. But hip hop? No.
Posted by: Jay Pee | August 25, 2009 at 12:49 PM
So is that why he performed at the hip hop awards?
Posted by: lookatme | August 25, 2009 at 01:04 PM
Personally, I wouldn't go across the street to see LIL WAYNE. Have better things to do with my time, money, effort... and life. Last week, I got people ganging up on me for not 'being' open minded ENOUGH to give rap and hip-hop a chance. Give me a break, no-lifers!!

What's the difference between rap and hip hop? Can someone tell me that?

Big ups to Bill Brownlee for braving both Swope Park AND Lil Wayne fans. Hope you had the Kevlar vest handy. Lil Wayne....ugh! I'd rather listen to the Hannah Montana Box set (not meant in a dirty way). What has happened to music fans circa 2009?? Between the talentless Jezzys and wannabe Souljas, please tell me that there are some young people left who need more substance than what these jokers and the whole genre of Pop-Punk (which fails on BOTH counts) has to offer. I know, or at least HOPE you're out there........
Posted by: Kids these days | August 25, 2009 at 03:30 PM
Hannah Montana has two (a set of) boxes? is that the secret to her suckcess? err success?
The real answer to your question is;
the death of independent radio which occured when Colin Powell's kid, at the FCC, convinced congress to drop the good old rules limiting ownership to 7AM 7FM and 7TV stations.
Look it up, it is true. aThis BS happened just before the turn of the century.
Actaully this occured right after congrees approved dropping the another good rule which banned interstate banking.
AND...all of the banks merged nationwide, and see what we got?
Following the elimiantion of limits of ownership rules all the banks and radio and TV staions were owned by one company, Brawndo.
When one person owns everything from radio to producing music to selling tickets to the concert venues, then viola...you have packaged product from top to bottom ala "The Jonas Bros. Now if you are a shareholder you dont care, BUT
but if you are a music lover, then you are left hoping that "that there are some young people left who need more substance than what these jokers and the whole genre of Pop-Punk (which fails on BOTH counts) has to offer"
a sad state of affairs.
btw - Branwdo is not really the company name that owns everything, it is really called Bank Of America, and clear channel communications.
We would be better off with the old rules in place....but as it is some day BRAWNDO WILL OWN EVERYTHNG, HERE IS PROOF.

According to this website Clear Channel Communication owns 1,018 radio stations, as of 2005.
It is really pretty scary, and quiet.
http://www2.hawaii.edu/~bgaston/mediaownership.htm
this website discusses the history
http://books.google.com/books?id=1T8LX1lG-t0C&pg=PA256&lpg=PA256&dq=FCC,+ownership+to+7AM+7FM+and+7+TV+stations.&source=bl&ots=eR0Gq760-y&sig=ftrx1Mh5hh-TVODT7KXL8PX0EGU&hl=en&ei=blOUStbdFY2cMbuMsPoH&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1#v=onepage&q=&f=false
and that is how we came to be, where we are today, scratching our heads, asking what in the fk happened?

Hip hop is when white people make the music and/or it is played on 96.5 the buzz.
Rap is when black people make it and it isnt played on 96.5 the buzz.

Posted by: Steve | August 26, 2009 at 09:33 AM
You blacks are saying very racist comments, yet you are the first to cry racism e.g. the trumped up Jazzy Jeff incident.
How did it get to the point where blacks feel it is OK to be racist against whites, while the opposite is frowned upon?

Perhaps Sprint Center, Starlight, Sandstone, and the other local concert venues should hang large signs next to the stage entrance that state, "You are in MISSOURI", or "You are in KANSAS." (depending on the venue, of course).
Seems like all these musicians just can't get it right.
Posted by: Granimal | August 26, 2009 at 04:45 PM
So, I went to the show in KC...I drove all the way from Wausau,WI (about 10 hours) and I have to say it was well worth it. I thought all together the show was very entertaining. There were people of all kinds in the audience, young to old, black to white and everything in between. Just because it doesn't entertain everyone doesn't mean it's not entertaining to a huge population. Music is an art, a way of expression. To each his own....You can't judge a person by what they listen to or the concerts they attend. I'm a professional white woman and I just happen to be very intrigued by lil wayne.....Just my opinion, everyone is entitled to one right?? I loved the show, all the performances & I would definatly do it again! Greatest rapper alive is NOT an understatement!

I have lived in KC my whole life. I grew on Main street , moved to KCKS, then back to PVKS, TO THE PLAZA, TO midtown, not in JO.
I have been to over 1500 concerts in this area, while I have lived all over on both sides of the border, and I never understood this BS concern.
WHY DOES ANYONE GIVE A SH!T ABOUT this kcmo, Ks, Mo, thing?
WHO CARES?? would you mind explaining why you do?
I now live in JO, but I am 2 minutes from the plaza, 2 minutes to WYCO, 5 minutes to N.KC.
IT HAS ALWAYS SEEMED LIKE THE SAME FREEKIN CITY TO ME, SO WHY IS THIS AN ISSUE to you Hatfields and Mcoys?
Do you really not have enough things to care about in this world, besides worrying about what some music artist, who is merely blurting out a "hello to you?
It is canned they do it every night, they dont care. Are you so insecure that if they say the wrong location, that you imagine they are not to you?
I go to shows all over MO and WYCO and N.KC, AND I DONT CARE WHAT THEY SAY,,,why do you care? would you please enlighten me?
I am more pissed off at people being pissed off about this, than being concerened about what some dumbass hippie music playing donkey hello to.
HELLO KANSAS
HELLO KANSAS CITY
HELLO MISSOURI
it is all the same to me, it always has been, I dont understand why you peole care about this, AND IT DRIVES ME CRAZY. please explain.
WHO CARES????

Best thing I've ever read in the comments on this site. Spot on and I'm glad someone said it. As someone who has lived on both sides of the state line, who gives a shit whether they say Kansas, Kansas City or Missouri.
Can you think of any other mid-sized to major city that is named after a different state (obviously I'm talking KCMO here) that is only minutes away? That's gotta be a bit confusing to many artists who haven't spent much time in the mid-west.
Posted by: Matt | August 27, 2009 at 08:46 AM
I've never cared about the geographic faux pas either. I'm there for the music and don't pretend to think that these artists know the difference between KC, Akron or whatever burg they might be playing that particular night. It's just another case of the area inferiority complex rearing its ugly head when the audience gets bent about this very minor misstep. Actually, it seems to me that reviewers are the only ones that feel the constant need to even mention this as most of the fans I've been around, couldn't care less when it happens.
Posted by: pellboy | August 27, 2009 at 09:40 AM
That state line has always been a bad thing about this city. There is no other city in America that is subdivided by stateline not to mention three counties and too many political divsions. I wont even disuss all the Maybarry like small towns in JOCO, with all the different cop shops, and all the BS that entails.
Look at the how morons in Mission Ks have ruined that lil burb with thier BS big building plans, it is now a weed infested field.
If this area in which we all live was one big city, this crap would not happen.
The divisions ruin the collective tax base, destroy any hopes of a cohesive government, lay waste to the KCMO school district and cause this Hatfield McCoy issues about names.
There is nothing short of moving the state line 50 miles one way or the other that will ever solve this, and that wont happen.
So maybe the artists should just say "Hello you mhrfkrs", and keep everyone happy.
I will hang up now, and wait for anyone to explain why they care what lil artistypes say, when they say HELLO.
HELLO YOU MTHRFKRS!!!!

Hey Spike,
Life and most things are cyclical. The black on white racism is a direct reaction to the years of abuse systematically handed down by your white forefathers. Now most of the white on black racism is a direct reaction to the black on white racism that currently happens. I for one find it all very interesting, and dont feel it will ever end. Plus its always been the American way that the have-nots can riducule the haves. Case in point, its alright for a fat person to make fun of a skinny person, but not vice versa. Or the poor to make fun of the rich. Always has, always will.
Even more interesting is this. Think 60 years ago a black guy would have been scared to death to eyeball a car full of white people for fear of violence. Fast forward to now-a white guy is scared to death to eyeball a car full of black guys, for that same fear of violence.
Most people think its tragic and sad, I just view it as a part of life, and a consequence of the diversity in our country. Get over it, accept it or move to a different country.
Posted by: Ronnie | August 27, 2009 at 09:51 AM
You're WRONG, Pellboy. As a Missourian, I hate it when bands/artists refer to me as "Kansas" when they play a venue in a state replete with many places for touring acts to play, be it an enormo-dome like the Sprint Center, a musical oasis like Knuckleheads, or a squalid landfill like The Crossroads. Hearing the boos that follow such a geographical $@#% up by bands that tour the country for a living and should just plain KNOW BETTER, well, I sense I'm not alone in my outrage.
People from Johnson County look down on and rag on about our city and state every chance they get (What business does ANYONE in Johnson County have in criticizing KCMO in the Star's letter's section on a daily basis??), but oddly, they have to come across State lines for much of their entertainment, as staid and lily-white Kansas doesn't seem to want fans of Rock and Hip Hop, you know, 'subversive' elements, invading their conservative little Shangra-la.
So being referred to as "Kansas" over here isn't just something to dismiss lightly. It's an egregious insult to my state with it's actual cities with Urban culture (there might be a small patch of KCK that has this), culture galore, Major League Sport's franchises (Hey, I'll take a crappy team over NO team), and education systems that, flawed as they are, are open enough that they don't dismiss concepts like Evolution. Oh, and say hi to Fred Phelps and ask him to stay over there for chrissake!!

"Hey Mr "Glad I'm on THIS side of the river"",
uh, please note that it is not a river, it is a state line. Do you actaully live here?
AND if you do, I would have bet if this was such an issue you would change the name from "Kansas City" to "Missouri City".
Why is it called KANSAS city anyway?
Does New YorkCity call itself "NewJersey city"?
how about, just dont have an issue with it? How about. just say hello back to the band, and move on.
here, allow me to write your reponse;
have no problem???
HELL NO!!, THEMS FIGHTN WORDS, AND US HATFIELDS AND MCCOYS LOVE US A GOOD FIGHTN...YEE HAW!!

WTF???
You might be thunkin too much hillbillyboy.
Try to imagine that you are in a band, and that you are on the road traveling the country and you are here in our fine metropolis.
Now imagine that you come on stage and you have played a couple of great songs, you are feeling good ( I know it is hard, but try to imagine)anyway....
imagine that the crowd is happy, and the you are happy and you merely say HELLO KANSAS (just trying to be polite) and all of sudden the crowd starts booing, and get snarky?
what would you think?
This might explain why some bands play short set here ,and no wonder Jacob Dylan did not want to talk too much.
There no telling what innocent comment might piss you off.

Thanks for proving my point about an inferiority complex, THIS side.
Maybe it's because I'm a transplant to this area and have also lived for extended stretches on both sides of the line (KU grad but current KCMO resident)but I (and no matter how vehemently you disagree)and alot of others at least as far as I've noticed don't really give a shit about the mistake. Do you think a musician from for instance, Birmingham, England should know the difference between the two divided states when alot of Americans don't? But hey, if you want to get all indignant about an IMAGINARY stateline, be my guest.
I think Jackson Browne said it best..."these towns all look the same".
Posted by: pellboy | August 27, 2009 at 01:54 PM
Wow. Are you all serious? You just got done reading a review on a concert and you are talking about which area code you live in? C'mon now people. Does it really matter. Does it? You should be there for the music. Your going to a show of a band or artist. Thats really all you should be there for. Not to make sure they say the right town or city or even state. Most artist are either drunk, high, exhausted, or just dont give a shit to say the right town. Face it, they dont care about YOU! They care about how many tickets and shirts are sold. The Rolling Stones get all the money from the parking to beer sales when they come into town. Think they give a shit about Joe Shmo who just spent 500 bucks for front row seats. Nope they care about his money. Money is why artist go on the road. They dont make much off of album sales, they make tons of money touring. They tour for two months to 2 years straight. They dont know where they are at, they are in the back of a tour bus. I am off topic here now. But does it ruin your night that bad that you have to come onto the stars webpage and cry about how Lil Wayne said Kansas. Boo fucking who. You like Lil wayne thats why you went to see him live. other then his performance who cares if he would of said Hello Alaska. He is working and you just got worked for 40 bucks It all equals out. if you love the artist or the music then who cares. and who gives a fuck about where anyone lives in kansas or Mo. Everyone uses both states, so shut the fuck up bitch.
Posted by: Brandon | August 27, 2009 at 05:53 PM
I was only looking for a rational understanding of WHY?
Why would ANYONE care if/when the artist doesnt say the EXACT correct location?
Why is it a big deal?
I may not come to feel the same, but I am curious.
Like when I was curious about that outbreak of unprovoked drive by shooting/ murders in the 90s. I wondered "what the heck?" "Why would anyone do that?
Then I learned about the "blood in/blood out" gang concept. Some less-than-humans believed that when you join a gang, you must kill someone. This way, the gang dreamEed, that the new member could not testify against them, for fear of them accusing the memeber murder too.
Of course in the long run it did not work out so well, and the whole drive by shooting gimmick slowed down, thank goodness.
Although it was crazy logic, at least I understood why less than humans were killing others, for no reason.
anyway....
I would like to understand why people care if the artist does not say the EXACT COORRECT location, when really they only saying hello. They are being friendly, and then the crowd gete mad and boos and yells ruining it.
:( why?
It is not like rodeo sex you know.
uh, Do you know what rodeo sex is?
OK, I will share.
Rodeo sex is when you are in the doogy style position, and you are riding you partner hard, and then ON PURPOSE you say their wrong name ....... and then you try to stay on for 8 seconds.
SO, does anyone have a rational reason WHY they care when an artist does not say the EXACT right location?
why is it a big deal?
Posted by: RodeoRiderRideher | August 27, 2009 at 08:06 PM
Does it matter?? Yeah, it does Brandon, and you are wrong about me using Kansas for ANYTHING (and watch your language, you lowlife). I have everything I need in Missouri, so why suffer the flat state (and attitudes) of Kansas?? It's also really hard to take such a expletive-laden statement seriously from someone named 'Brandon." How's your sister, BUFFY? Well, I'll tell you, as she is currently underneath me (Say HI to your brother!)
Anyhoo.....
MissouriDity, ya just don't get it, do ya?? Again, AGAIN, many of these artists tour the country relentlessly, so they should know where the $%@# they are. Period. Unless their brains are rendered senseless from too many Tour bus bong hits, they should at least have rudimentary Geography skills.
I can almost understand European artists %&#*ing this up, but if you actually LIVE in the U.S. and have been to this city several times, as Lil Wayne has, then you shouldn't offend a whole state (I notice mostly folks from Kansas say it's no big deal). But then most Rappers aren't known for their intellectual prowess...nor are their fans (Hi, Brandon!).
Posted by: Still glad I'm on THIS side of the river | August 27, 2009 at 09:39 PM

"ALL those words, and not one single reason WHY you think it is a big deal eh?"
Man, you must have extremely LOW comprehension, friend. The salient reason I have with artists in Missouri referring to us as KANSAS, that I will repeat, AGAIN, for the slower folks here, is that it's simply insulting. So take you "no nuthin" Hillbilly insults and choke on them, bee-yotch.
Put yourselves in our shoes, oh, high and mighty people of Stepford, ooops, I mean, Kansas. You wouldn't like it if a band called you "Missouri," which is exactly what Pearl Jam did at a show in Sandstone that ended up on their live disc series. You can hear loud booing, same as when "Go Mizzou" was flashed on the Sprint Center screen during the Green Day show. You booed us in our own state!
They don't want to be equated with people who can live in diversity and actually enjoy living around urban culture and may have progressive ideas. WE don't want to be equated with a state were many (not all) people are conservative crackpots who will do anything that fools like Glenn Beck tells them to, are uppity for no apparent reason, and who not only suffer fools like Fred Phelps and school boards who scoff at the concept of Evolution, but REVERE them! If you don't GET that, then I can't help ya, friend. But each time we are called "Kansas," I will be the one booing loudest and throwing %#@* at the stage.
Oh, and I would rather be called POSSUM City (KC's originally slated name-true story), than KANSAS City. I would like to exhume the moron who named this city and slowly torture their dust. But I gotta go to work, so I'll put that on my to do list for the weekend............

Dear RodeoRiderRideher (if you are out there)
Haha...First, I apologize from the bottom of my heart about not using paragraphs. I guess I should be more cautious when it comes to writing when I am on a newspapers website.
Why can't someone take me serious from my name? That I don't understand. Confused on that one. However, how do you get the nerve to call me a "low-life" for using "foul" language when you just said you had my sister "Buffy?" under you. Weird. Just weird. That was rude if I had a sister.
All, I was trying to get across was the artist do not care about where they are performing at. Simple as that. They do not care. Sure they may like performing in Vegas cause they can go party it up afterwards. Noonecares about Kansas or Mo. Noone but people who come on KC Stars' website to complain about it. Sorry one wrong state name ruined your evening or week. But it happened.
Why do people in MO hate people in KS? Not everyone in Kansas is Rich, and Not everyone in Mo is poor. You all need to move out of the midwest. Experience something other then this amish paradise.
Feel free to e-mail me at [email protected] if you would like to argue with me more instead of taking up space on here with all this bullshit. Let's all just take a deep breathe and get back to reality. Or have we all forgotten what that is?
Alright, have a god evening and I look forward to reading your next radical blog(s) and personal hatred!!
AS THE COOL KIDS IN MO SAY....PEACE!
