Friday's show out at Sandstone Amphitheater was a two-stage, all-day, 11-band holiday weekend blow-out -- the annual Buzz Beach Ball, sponsored by radio station 96.5 FM. The lineup included big-name local acts, like Mac Lethal and the Republic Tigers, and several support acts accustomed to headlining, like Taking Back Sunday and the Von Bondies.
The weather didn't keep many people away, though. The place was packed -- nearly 17,000. Sandstone hasn't been this full since that Jack Johnson show last summer. The difference, though: His crowd chills. This crowd was way more wound up and included way more two-fisted beer drinkers, some of whom looked like they weren't old enough to vote. The lawn was in its usual state of revery and chaos, but the general admission section was dangerously (illegally?) overcrowded and rowdy at the same time. Some of the aisles were packed to a standstill, which forced fans to climb over seats to get out. Apparently there's no check on how many people pour into that section. It looked like it was at least 1,000 over capacity. Not good.
But the other news this evening was about the headliners, the reunited Blink 182, who postponed several shows this week following the death of DJ AM (Adam Goldstein), a close friend of Travis Barker, Blink's drummer. Friday's was their first show back since the brief hiatus.
Blink is a pop-punk band with a horny-boy's psyche. They write catchy pop tunes, and then give them a twist that revolves around the one-two vocal dispatch of guitarist Tom DeLonge and bassist Mark Hoppus. Sometimes they sing over each other; sometimes they trade lines. It's a definitive feature.
Their songs address standard adolescent themes; their stage banter is all about butts, genitalia, f-bombs, masturbation,"I did your mom" rejoinders and a few pre-adolescent gags, some of which wouldn't pass muster on "Wayne's World" or "Beavis & Butthead." ("Hello, Boner Springs," one of them said.) When they sing "What's My Age Again?," the question is not rhetorical.
Those bits got old fast. Towards the end, it felt like the crowd had tuned that stuff out, especially the parents with young children.
Their music, however, never lost its punch or nostalgic appeal among the crowd, which appeared to be heavily in the 15- to 25 -year-old range, give or take a few years either way. During "All The Small Things" -- "it's about all your penises," DeLonge said -- the place shook and roared, and young men in their 20s bounced and sang-along like teen girls watching their favorite boy band.
They opened with "Dumpweed," then "Feeling This," one of several greatest-hits tracks they put in their 90-minute set. "Small Things" set off the biggest explosion, but other songs came close, like "Always," which sent a pack of young ladies into delerium, and "Josie," which prompted some fans on their way out of the place to pull a 180, run back and listen.
There's no finesse or subtlety to what they do. It's: wind up another song and let the melody and energy enflame the crowd. And it worked. Behind the band, six porthole screens showed video images, some of them directly from the MTV videos that helped make the band famous. It helps to have Barker, the Tommy Lee of his generation and genre, doing so much of the heavy lifting. He can sound like six machine guns going off at once.
Weezer preceded Blink, and 90 percent of the crowd was in place when it started its set not long after 7:30 p.m. Unlike Blink, there's little gimmick to what they do, unless the uniforms they wear or Rivers Cuomo's fashionable geekiness comes off as too pretentious for you.
The opened with a few bars of Black Sabbath's "Warpigs," then went directly into "Hash Pipe." Their stage setup was spartan: They played before a huge, gold curtain emblazoned with their logo in black. Occasionally, some rudimentary videos were projected onto the curtain.
The set was otherwise no-frills. The only lull came when Cuomo tried to set up a crowd sing-along during "Holiday" "Island in the Sun." Otherwise, he and the band wound up and threw softballs to a crowd that returned them with gusto. Most of their songs ingnited loud sing-alongs, but none was louder nor merrier than the one that broke out during "Buddy Holly." It was like watching Cheap Trick do "Surrender" back in the day.
Blink 182: Dumpweed, Feeling This, The Rock Show, What's My Age Again?, Obvious, I Miss You, Stay Together For the Kids, Down, Always, Stockholm Syndrome, First Date, Man Overboard, Going Away To College, Not Now, All The Small Things, Reckless Abandon, Josie, Anthem Part 2. Encore: Carousel, Dammit.
Weezer: Warpigs/Hash Pipe, Troublemaker, Undone (The Sweater Song), Surf Wax America, Perfect Situation, I Want You To, Say It Ain't So, My Name Is Jonas, Island in the Sun, Why Bother?, Pork and Beans, Beverly Hills, Buddy Holly, Should I Stay Or Should I Go?
"Blink is a pop-punk band with a horny-boy's psyche." haha, never heard them been put quite like that before.

no byline??, but an interesting read/review ; ),
it took us there, so we didnt have to go, thx.
The kids may rail on you, but not sure the attendees can read, so no worries.
would say something about "oh the future of america" but it has been being said for about 60 years now; )
have fun, cuz fun is a good thing to have.

Weezer played "Island in the Sun," not "Holiday"
Posted by: Weezer Fan | September 05, 2009 at 03:32 PM
right. 'island.' my bad. (like that song)

This was a fun show. Fortunately we were up in the reserved but the pit was active from TBS on through Blink 182. Sound was great. 1st time I've heard Republic Tigers but was very impressed. Overall a great Labor Day party. Not impressed with the "upgrades" since the rename...

It was an awesome day! I have a mini-review (plus some partial setlists) of each band on my blog, just click my name. Favorite band of the night for me was Weezer. The crowd drowned out the band on most of the songs! Only one bad band for the day (Chester French), but it was an awesome day. :D

By the way: Tim, I think we were standing next to eachother by the second stage while stellastarr* was playing. You were wearing sandals?!
Posted by: mankvill | September 05, 2009 at 05:18 PM
No. That's one of my favors to society. I cover my feet. I got there at 7.
Posted by: tim finn | September 05, 2009 at 05:35 PM
I think you have a doppleganger, then.
Posted by: mankvill | September 05, 2009 at 08:02 PM
Mankvill, I don't know much of the Republic Tigers, but as far as best local band you really ought to check out the Appleseed Cast.
Posted by: pbt1977 | September 05, 2009 at 11:55 PM
That's just what I've heard from people. I have heard lots of good stuff about the Appleseed Cast as well. They're playing here in Lawrence soon...maybe I'll check them out!
Posted by: mankvill | September 06, 2009 at 12:16 AM
Yeah, I would've preferred they played "Holiday." Excellent set though, just could've used more Pinkerton.

I was disappointed that this thing was on a Friday afternoon. I really wanted to see Company of Thieves but couldn't get off work. A one-day music "festival" in the middle of a Friday afternoon, just does not make any sense to me.
Posted by: kizzle | September 06, 2009 at 01:21 AM
Best local band is Audiovox. Hands down. They're playing with Passion Pit and Owl City on October 1st in KC.

I've seen Blink numerous times over the years, but while musically they sounded ok, the vocals were absolutely shite. I realize they've never been great singers and what not, but it was horrendous from where I stood in the pit on the right side of the stage. Unlistenable.
I was never a great fan of Weezer, but they impressed me a lot. I like Von Bondies, too, but they didn't turn on one bank of speakers by us until they had two songs left in the set, so their sound was muddled for the most part. I liked Stellastarr on the side stage, too.
The pit was packed, probably overly so, but it was a blast down there, anyway!!
Posted by: TK | September 06, 2009 at 09:19 AM
I liked Weezer,I'd not seen them or Blink 182 before. I was very familiar with the content of Blink 182's songs. I knew what I was getting into when I bought my tickets. Due to traffic I dind't see any other band, except Taking Back Sunday, and I don't care. I don't listen to them anyway.
Weezer did amazing. Hash Pipe is on of my favorite songs. Then Blink 182 took the stage, and you could feel the power of Travis Barker and the boys. The skits are part of their act. The poor vocals, are part of it, too. Blink 182 were amazing, and I still don't understand why they had to be at Buzz Beach ball, and why it was at Sandstone, in the first place. Buzz Beachball is not a Rockfest, never will be. Blink 182, and Weezer can stand up on their own. Blink would sell out, anyway, with Weezer. I'm 47 years old,and I had a blast, and I'm female, and I'm a Blnk 182 fan.
Horny psyche? ha, even Greenday talk about masterbation, and I saw them too. I love Blink 182,and I like them more now. I was a bit afraid that DJ Am's death would over shadow this show, but it didn't seem to. Maybe in one of their songs, "Down". Blink 182 and Weezer made a pretty good party.

ummmmmm me likes cougars:)
Posted by: Mastur her | September 06, 2009 at 03:31 PM
For me, Weezer dominated the show. I was right by the stage and the energy while Weezer was playing was amazing. The crowd pulsed with the music and being able to breathe lost its importance. Maybe it's because Im not a huge Blink fan but I felt like that was lost when Blink started playing. Still a really fun show though
Posted by: goodtime | September 06, 2009 at 04:02 PM
I heard Chester French was great. I didn't know anything about them so I iTuned them. They sound fantastic. I also heard the same about Blink's bad vocals. Entertaining for my 15 year old but even he said the vocals were crap.
Posted by: wadkc | September 06, 2009 at 05:42 PM
I had been waiting for this show for 5 years now. It was so great to see the Mark, Tom and Travis back together on stage rocking it out. This is my 5th time seeing them and it was like the first time all over again. There towards the end before they broke up, they seemed detached on stage, but last Friday they seemed connected like in the old days. The back in forth banter was hilarious and as always the music was solid. The last album they put out (Self Titled) was a total shift from Take Off Your Pants and Jacket. They grew as musicians in a sense. I'm really looking forward to the new album. The best part of the whole show was the finale of Dammit. With Mark and Tom getting down on their knees in front of Travis' kit, it was like their own private jam session. I loved it!

okay so what you are saying about blink is that their immature? annoying? assinine? crude? You say that this song "Always" got the ladies in a roar? maybe the ladies that started listening to them just like in the past couple years? the best performance and most anticipated was carousel. why do you think they saved it for an encore? That is rediculous, it was worth being up in the pits just to see blink i mean i was there. And i'm fine. i heard you wore sandals.(thongs) how are you going to write all that about the fans that paid to go see them its not there fault that the place was small.
Posted by: rusty | September 06, 2009 at 10:30 PM
""The kids may rail on you, but not sure the attendees can read, so no worries.""
oops, I guess some of them can ;)
"That is rediculous...."

I absolutely love Island in the Sun!
Posted by: goldflop rakeback | September 07, 2009 at 02:38 PM
I havent seen them in concert so I truely missed out I suppose. The last group I heard live was godfathers of love. With one of the sound wizards from enimens latest lp recovery, I guess they have promise to possibly becoming the next big thing perhaps.
