We made contact with jazz musician Matt Chalk, the Shawnee Mission East senior who is in Los Angeles for tonight's Grammy Awards show (7 p.m. on KCTV, Channel 5). Chalk will perform with the official 2010 Grammy Band, then step in and perform live on the air with the Dave Matthews Band. Via text-message, he told us how all this came about:
"I was chosen for the Grammy Band by an audition DVD I sent in. After promoting the program in 20,000 high schools across the country, they chose 26 of us, a choir, combo and big band to participate.
This week we have been, and will be, playing at events and clubs all over town as well as recording a CD at Capitol Records. So far, we've played with James Moody, Kenny Burrell, Hubert Laws, Anthony Wilson, Boney James, Mindi Abair, and Brian Culbertson.
The DMB thing came about early this week when he said he wanted to use some of us for his horn line at the Grammys. We learned the music and did a couple rehearsals , one at a studio and one at the Staples Center earlier (Friday) morning ..."
