This is turning into a three-for weekend for local bands at local venues. Here are three three-band shows worth your while this weekend:
The RecordBar, 1020 Westport Road, is featuring three different but like-minded bands Saturday night: the Old Canes with the Caves and Cowboy Indian Bear.
The Old Canes are Chris Crisci of the Appleseed Cast with a supporting cast of Lawrence/Kansas City musicians. On the “Feral Harmonic” studio recording, that cast included members and former members of White Whale, Boys Life, Fourth of July, the Minus Story and Drakkar Sauna.
Their sound is a rapturous, dynamic, slightly unhinged brew of instruments (guitars, drums and percussion, cello, violin, harmonica, banjo, toy piano, trumpet, blues harp), styles (psychedelic-country, roots, indie-Americana) and vocals — about as far from the Appleseed Cast as you can get. (If you’ve heard Wilco’s “Airline to Heaven” on the second “Mermaid Avenue” CD, you have a notion of where the Canes’ sound goes.) Show time is 10 p.m. Cover is $7. You must be at least 21 to get in the club. Visit www.therecordbar.com (816-753-5207).
Davey’s Uptown, 3402 Main St., has a stout triple-bill on Friday night: the Brannock Device with Howard Iceberg & the Titanics and the Grisly Hand. Show time is 9 p.m. Cover is $6. Visit www.daveysuptown.com (816-753-1909).
If you want something relentlessly wild and loud, head to the Riot Room, 4048 Broadway, on Saturday night. The bill: Cretin 66, the Architects and the Rich Boys. Doors open at 8 p.m. Show time is 10 p.m. Cover is $7. Visit www.theriotroom.com (816-442-8179).
He has already conquered Ben Folds and handled Pink Floyd. In December, he refashioned Radiohead. This month, local jazz pianist Mark Lowrey is taking on an entire genre — hip-hop — and giving it a hard, improvisational twist. Here’s his take on “Mark Lowrey vs. Hip-hop”:
“It is an experiment in cross-genre improvisation, melding groove-oriented free jazz with freestyle rapping. I have selected the drummers: Brandon Draper of the Quixotic band and Organic Proof, Zack Albetta of Shay Estes and Trio ALL; and Giuliano Mingucci of the Barclay Martin Ensemble. Sephiroth a.k.a. Kartoon has chosen the emcees: himself, Les Izmore of Hearts of Darkness, Vertigone and Swayzorbladez.
“I will be playing bass synth, keyboards and toy piano. There will be no rehearsal or preconceived structure. Emcees and drummers will come on and off stage at will.”
More local musicians have been added to the roster, including members of the rock band Be/Non. The show starts at 10 p.m. Friday at the Czar Bar, 1531 Grand Blvd., which is now a 3 a.m. bar on Fridays and Saturdays. Cover is $5. Visit www.czarbar.com (816-221-2244).
Friday is the 75th anniversary of the birth of Elvis Aaron Presley, and if you’re in the mood to pay tribute to the King, you have at least two options:
Jim Kilroy has reserved the VooDoo Lounge at Harrah’s casino for his annual Elvis Birthday Bash. The event will showcase six Elvis impersonators/tribute artists: Bobby Simkins, Michael D., Eric Haws, Elvis II, John Harbolt and Frank Werth & the Heartbreak Hotel Band. Show time is 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 to $20. Visit www.voodookc.com (816-472-7777).
