Our neighbor to the north is getting prime shows we should be getting. Here are a few: Yeasayer (Omaha, April 25, St. Louis April 26); Butch Walker (Omaha, May 4, St. Louis, May 5); the Mountain Goats (June 13); Delta Spirit (June 17); the Hold Steady (July 6). And there are more.
add to that list Mates of State (June 25), who used to LIVE IN LAWRENCE

The fact that Mates Of State are skipping us is pretty lame.
I'm driving to Omaha on Sunday to see Yeasayer and have done so in the past to see Bon Iver. It's too bad bands aren't really hitting up KC/Lawrence AND Omaha.

Road trip to Omaha to see Gallagher 10/8. Wooo-hooo!!
Posted by: Harpo | April 23, 2010 at 03:35 PM
St. Louis I'm not bothered by. Omaha, however, I have an issue with. How does any band determine Omaha is a better place to go? I don't get it.

I wonder how much the presence of Saddle Creek Records has to do with this.
Posted by: Joel | April 23, 2010 at 04:05 PM
I think Saddle Creek has a lot to do with it. Omaha has a great indie music scene that's better than KC's and is right up there with Lawrence's.
I think it would make sense for these bands to alternate between Omaha and KC/Lawrence every other tour.

Why mention Butch Walker? You didn't review him when he was here 2 weeks ago.
Posted by: wadkc | April 23, 2010 at 06:25 PM
Butch Walker was just here a couple of weeks ago. That's probably why we got passed up. He had a gig at the Beaumont scheduled a couple of years ago and cancelled. Not sure if it had to do with scheduling or ticket sales.
We are getting Murs (in Lawrence), KoRn and Blitzen Trapper (I'm looking forward to this one at recordBar) that Omaha are getting as well.
Sometimes it's all about scheduling. I wonder what's going on in town on some of those dates? I know we're getting the Black Keys and Omaha isn't.

Playing a 45 minute opening set before Train at the uptown isn't the same as headlining your own show.

I have seen this website give a lot of atttention, and props, to some real goofballs, so I wonder if would it be too much to ask for some love and prayers to be sent Bret Michaels way?
Bret is one of the good guys of rock and roll.

I went to Omaha to see Cannibal Corpse the day before they played Sandstone on the Mayhem Fest tour last year. It was at a venur called the Slowdown. Like a bigger Granada fused with Record Bar. I liked it a lot! The drive isn't terrible at all, either. I will be back for more shows, I'm sure.

Seems like the smaller shows have always stayed away from kansas city, hitting up lawrence or columbia instead. Looks like Omaha is grabbing some now as well. The only thing we cn do is continue to support the small scene when it comes through town. If artists know before they mark in a city for a tour that it will sell out there is no discussion to be had, that city gets a show. Having the right venues and treating these bands right helps as well, i think we have a good thing going with the record bar and knuckleheads, corssroads is a nice touch as well, an outdoor place med size, thats gotta be something bands like to see, gets them out of the clubs for a night. You can alwasy write the label asking for a kc show, if they get enough people asking surely they will swing by the next time.

I said this last year. Omaha, specifically The Waiting Room, is killing us.
Posted by: CER | April 24, 2010 at 11:38 AM
You're right, playing a 45 minute opening set before Train isn't like headlining your own show, however any management or booking agency wouldn't book a headlining show about a month after it in the same market.
CER - The Waiting Room is a cool little venue and that whole neighborhood it's in is a lot of fun. I can see why the Omaha kids love it. I had a blast at the Electric Six show there last fall.

Except that's just what they did in st. louis. train/walker played the pageant on april 5. ... i'm sure lots of walker fans around here didn't want to drop $40 on a show in which they didn't want to see the headliner. It's like throwing away your entree on a prix fixe dinner.
Posted by: tim finn | April 24, 2010 at 02:08 PM
That's where you're wrong Timmy. Butch & Train were worth the price. That's why I was waiting for the review. I didn't think there was anything else going on that night either. I hadn't really listened much to Train but that cat's voice is spot on. Both Butch and Pat sang "Rich Girl" together and then did "Dance the Night Away" by Van Halen later in the show. A blast.

No ones wrong. We just disagree.

again? :)
Posted by: wadkc | April 24, 2010 at 07:47 PM
Maybe tim wasn't paid enough to review the show, haha, jk tim, things arn't all that bad here. Something that could help us is radio pushing some of the new inde music. Portland has great scene right now, none of it is played around here, half of the time i go to a show i see a radio station van out front yet that station rarely plays the music thats played and loved by many at the show. Pull a list of bands that are going to columbia, lawrence and omaha then run that list against radio stations here in town.

I heard he name Yeasayer, happened to see the video On Demand Music Choice (the song "O.N.E.") and it was terrible, in my opinion.
Posted by: Steve | April 26, 2010 at 08:57 PM
Both Omaha and Lawrence have similar indie music scenes. That being said, Omaha gets the slight edge because Betsy Wells is from there.
