A vinyl version of "Dark Side of the Moon" by Flaming Lips and Stardeath and White Dwarfs (and others) is one of several scores of exclusive Record Store Day issues that will be available Saturday.
Saturday is Record Store Day, and across the country, hundreds of independent record stores will celebrate their brick and mortar heritage and the culture they inspired.
Record labels have responded by offering more than 160 collectible items exclusively for the day. (For a complete list, go here.
Several retail outlets in Kansas City and Lawrence are planning festivities. Here’s a breakdown:
• Earwaxx Records & More, 6410 N. Oak in Gladstone. 816-436-9299. Web site. E-mail: [email protected] Hours: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Owner Gary Wilkerson said his store, which doubled in size when it moved up the block in March, will have an all-day 20-percent-off special on all used CDs and vinyl.
“I’ve put out tons of fresh stock since we moved,” he said. He has also ordered about two dozen of the Record Store Day exclusives — about 90 items in all.
Music: There will be DJs in the store starting at the 11 a.m. opening and until late afternoon, Wilkerson said.
• Kiefs Downtown Music, 823 Massachusetts St. in Lawrence. 785-843-9111. Web site. E-mail: [email protected] Hours: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Store manager Steve Wilson: “We’ll have lots of free stuff. And good vibes.”
Kiefs won’t offer many of the Record Store Day limited and special releases, Wilson said.
“RSD is cool, but the record companies are trying to turn it into another opportunity to sell us stuff we can’t return and that might not sell.”
Live music: At 3:30 p.m., Lydia Loveless, an “alt-country songstress” from Columbus, Ohio, performs. At 5 p.m., local punk/garage/glam rockers the Bleach Bloodz perform.
• Love Garden, 822 Massachusetts in Lawrence. 785-843-1551. Web site. E-mail: [email protected] Hours: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Owner Kelly Corcoran said his store will offer nearly all of the exclusive Record Store Day releases. Prices vary on those items, from $5 for various 7-inch vinyl releases with digital download to $260 for a vinyl Joy Division box set. Corcoran said he has ordered a few copies of the four-LP edition of Wilco’s live album “Kicking Television,” which includes eight new tracks. It will go for $75. He has ordered about three dozen copies of the seafoam-green vinyl version of “Dark Side of the Moon” by Flaming Lips and Stardeath and White Dwarfs, which will go for $24.
Other premiums: If you spend more than $50 on Saturday, 10 percent of your total gets banked into a gift certificate. So if your total is $75, you’ll get a $7.50 gift certificate good for six months.
No live music.
•Streetside Records, 4128 Broadway in Westport. 816-561-1580. Web site: search “Streetside Records” on Facebook. Hours: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Streetside, which is part of the FYE chain, will honor Record Store Day with live music, DJs and a special: 10 percent off all new vinyl, and if you buy three used, you get the fourth free.
Music: Local bands will perform nearly all day, starting at noon: Monta at Odds, Restless Breed, Surround Her Box, the Compass, Max Justus, Motorboater and Thee Water Moccasins.
• Vinyl Renaissance, 10922 Shawnee Mission Parkway in Shawnee. 913-962-0014. Web site. E-mail: [email protected] Hours: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“We will be celebrating Record Store Day with 20 percent off all used CDs and vinyl,” said Erik Voeks. “We will have a bunch of the limited-edition releases, like Peter Gabriel (split 7-inch single with Stephin Merritt), Rodriguez (a hand-numbered 7-inch) and Elvis Costello & the Attractions (“Live at Hollywood High” EP in vinyl).
Live music: Kansas City band Everyday/Everynight will perform “in the early afternoon,” Voeks said, “and we may be adding more.”
• Vintage Stock: The regional chain with stores in Belton, Blue Springs, Independence, Kansas City (Zona Rosa), Lee’s Summit, Liberty, Overland Park and Shawnee will offer a buy-two, get-one-free special on all used CDs and vinyl all day at all locations. Web site.
• Zebedee’s R.P.M., 1208 W. 39th St. 816-960-6900. Web site: Search “zebedees RPM” on Facebook. E-mail: [email protected] Hours: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Via its Facebook page: “Huge sale for Record Store Day. Storewide sale, excluding new arrivals.”
Thanks for posting this. I will make sure I stop in at least 1 of these stores Sat. I wish you could have mentioned what Ron Rooks or Anne Winter were planning for this day. They are missed.

I should visit these types of stores more often but I do always make a point of picking up at least 2 or 3 limited edition vinyl pieces on RSD.

On a Flaming Lips note they will be on Jimmy Kimmel's show tonight with Stardeath and White Dwarfs. I don't care for the Dark Side tribute but some of you may, so enjoy.
