Recommendations for a busy weekend
A monsoon of live music hits town this weekend. The big shows: Tool, Roger Daltrey, Michael Buble, Tim McGraw, JJ Grey & Mofro. If you like smaller venues and/or lower ticket prices, there’s plenty for you, too. Let us know what we didn't mention: Above: You can hear some "Pornography" at the Czar Bar on Friday. Donkey Show XXII: Wendy Williamson and Bill Sundahl, the spouses who birthed this modern-day vaudeville/cirque-de-full-moon bonanza, are going to become parents so the songs in their 12th Donkey Show will include the word “baby” in the title or lyrics. Five vocalists will perform with...

Review: Tool
Photos by Shane Keyser/the Star A recording of the voice of the late psychedelic drug proselytizer Timothy Leary echoed inside the Sprint Center at the onset of Tool's concert Friday. The relationship between music and illicit substances would be examined for the remainder of the quartet's two-hour performance. Tool occupies the conceptual space vacated by dormant classic rock band Pink Floyd. The bands share similarly dour perspectives while performing music favored by users of recreational drugs. Although it hasn't issued an album since 2006, Tool's reputation as a live powerhouse attracted almost 16,000 fans. Most weren't there solely for music....

Juggalo. Enough said. Too bad this guy is KC's.
Posted by: bob | June 24, 2010 at 08:52 AM
I have seen lots of his fliers in Lawrence all over town, when he comes here or has a new record out. So I can see why some cities would be annoyed.
Posted by: Steve | June 24, 2010 at 08:53 AM
Finally someone called the bluff of these perpetrators. Drive through KC and all you see are faded, torn pieces of outdated advertising on poles, bus stops, etc. You want to advertise? Then go buy a slot in a local publication. Oh yeah....your targeted demographic can barely read, but while they're waiting for 2 hours on the metro they can at least decipher your next cut will drop on June 23rd.

Come on now, his music isn't that bad and these days when rappers are getting hit with gun and drug charges its kinda nice to see Tech show up with something much less, speeding and hanging posters, some what of a funny story.
Posted by: Green | June 24, 2010 at 09:12 AM
Gotta agree with Tic5. Whether it's local, or blown out of proportion, like the VASTLY overrated Kanye West or Jay Z, Hip Hop, for the most part, is just dreadful and substantially bankrupt. Tech N9ne is a prime example. Call me when you can play an instrument or write an actual melody.
Posted by: Real Musicians Rule! | June 24, 2010 at 10:20 AM
I guess TechN9ne's the only act to ever hang posters? Like his music or not, the guy has become very successful using a grassroots, non-corporate approach in getting his message out. Technically, I'm sure the sign deal is illegal but it's a method that has been used by musical acts for as long as I can remember. Apparently, 'street cred' isn't what it used to be.
Posted by: pellboy | June 24, 2010 at 10:43 AM
Grassroots? No effin' way. Full color, glossy posters and billboards do not come from grassroots. Last I checked grassroots was some copies down at Kinkos and a few cheap stickers. Whether you want to admit it or not, there is some level of corporate backing for T9. There is a fine line between grassroots advertising and littering. This guy's campaign always crosses the line. I've been railing on these damn Irish fests, etc. for their continual blanketing of plastic waste on street corners as well. For the most part, a lot of these ads get taken down when the time comes, but many just lay there or blow away, which is where my gripe comes in.
Posted by: Oscar....a grouch | June 24, 2010 at 11:02 AM
Call me when you can play an instrument or write an actual melody. Seriously, thats like busting a honda civic for not having 4 wheel drive. Judge it for what it is not what it doesnt do for you.
Posted by: Green | June 24, 2010 at 11:20 AM
Yeah, the guy and his team have some coin now but they started out with a very grassroots approach and still maintain some semblance of that by staying local and controlling all aspects of his 'empire'. Look, I'm not a fan of his but hating on somebody simply because they perform 'music' you don't like is acting as immature as the majority of his audience is. Pretty simple for me, not a big fan of most rap/hip hop but it doesn't effect me in the least as I don't listen to it or go see it performed live. Outside of this his recent homage to Ollie Gates, I couldn't even name one of his songs. There are many young folks today who would think alot of the roots-based music that I enjoy is as boring and redundant as I find their favorites. To each his own and god forbid desecrating the beauty and majesty that is a telephone pole.
Posted by: pellboy | June 24, 2010 at 12:03 PM
God forbid desecrating the beauty and majesty that is a telephone pole, haha, well said. I wonder if the police would have arrested a kid posting flyers for a lost pet?
Posted by: Green | June 24, 2010 at 12:59 PM
I don't know, Green but since this has become such a serious offense, it's making me rethink my garage sale strategy.
Posted by: pellboy | June 24, 2010 at 01:59 PM
Better be careful, haha, the police will arrest you, wow, do these guys have nothing better to do, arresting someone for putting up posters, i think i would skip that court date too.
Posted by: Green | June 24, 2010 at 02:38 PM
Pellboy, I tend to agree. I find your response to be articulate, well thought out and persuasive. Therefore, it has no place on this blog...
Posted by: onthemark | June 24, 2010 at 03:32 PM
I can't believe some of the idiots that constantly and consistently post comments on this blog. Here's a generalization for you... 90% of the people in this part of the country are inconsiderate, fat, lazy, inbred, racist, ignorant, Wal-mart shopping luddites...
I love Kansas City, but I HATE (90% of) the people that live here.

To 'Wow' : You might want to know the meaning of the word GENERALIZATION before you use it in a sentence. C minus, my son.
Posted by: Mister Kotter | June 24, 2010 at 03:49 PM
gen·er·al·i·za·tion
Pronunciation: \ˌjen-rə-lə-ˈzā-shən, ˌje-nə-\
Function: noun
Date: 1761
1 : the act or process of generalizing
How is what I said an incorrect usage? ...other than I should have capitalized "luddite".
Please enlighten me. Oh, and "welcome back".
Posted by: Wow. | June 24, 2010 at 03:58 PM
Mister Kotter you might be in his 10% ... just saying, well you were, clearly you fell head first into the 90% group after the post.

I'm sorry...am I in the wrong class?! My mistake, I was looking for the BAND room!
I do prefer musicians that play the instruments. Not necessarily a hip hop fan but there is something to be said for the writing that goes into it.
Posted by: Naturelle | June 24, 2010 at 05:44 PM
Thing is, it's not just writing that goes into hip hop, there is an entire production behind the music, for example, look at the Roots, they all play instruments. This argument is so weak, I can name a lot of rock bands where the lead singer only sings and doesnt play anything, is he or she any less than the rest of the band, of course not.
Posted by: Green | June 25, 2010 at 01:23 AM
But AGAIN, Green, many of those 'talentless' lead singers at least know how to write actual lyrics that mean something and can conceptualize concepts like melody and chorus, which rarely, if ever happens in Hip Hop. Defend it all you want, but Rap is truly music for the small-minded. One look at it's fans, Black, White, or Purple, is all the proof you need.
For purely scientific purposes, I sat through Eminem's new K-hole of a video and it is just horrendous. He can't make it through one verse without the F-word and he actually thinks his illiterate attempt at being deep is actually meaningful to anyone outside of his own inflated ego......and his half-wit fans.
Posted by: True Dat! | June 25, 2010 at 09:16 AM
The only song I've ever heard of Tech N9ne's is the Ollie Gates deal and really know nothing of the hip hop/rap "scene". I was just saying there is some creativity to the songs/raps.
To say rap is music for the small minded is, well, rather mean and small minded itself.
Posted by: Naturelle | June 25, 2010 at 11:29 AM
There are a lot of genres that are being billed together here. You have to split them up a little, a simple look at it could be the following; hip hop, house, soul, rap, dance and electronic.
Lets compare some lyrics
ACDC - Back in Black
Back in black
I hit the sack
I've been too long I'm glad to be back
Yes, I'm let loose
From the noose
That's kept me hanging about
I've been looking at the sky
'Cause it's gettin' me high
Forget the hearse 'cause I never die
I got nine lives
Cat's eyes
Abusin' every one of them and running wild
CHORUS:
'Cause I'm back
Yes, I'm back
Well, I'm back
Yes, I'm back
Well, I'm back, back
(Well) I'm back in black
Yes, I'm back in black
Back in the back
Of a Cadillac
Number one with a bullet, I'm a power pack
Yes, I'm in a bang
With a gang
They've got to catch me if they want me to hang
Cause I'm back on the track
And I'm beatin' the flak
Nobody's gonna get me on another rap
Don't look at me now
I'm just makin' my play
Don't try to push your luck, just get out of my way
CHORUS
Well, I'm back, Yes I'm back
Well, I'm back, Yes I'm back
Well, I'm back, back
Well I'm back in black
Yes I'm back in black
hooo yeah
Ohh yeah
Yes I am
Oooh yeah, yeah Oh yeah
Back in now
Well I'm back, I'm back
Back, I'm back
Back, I'm back
Back, I'm back
Back, I'm back
Back
Back in black
Yes I'm back in black
Out of the sight!
Wish you were here - Pink Floyd
So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have you found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.
Summertime - DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince
summer, summer, summertime
time to sit back and unwind
Verse One: Fresh Prince
Here it is the groove slightly transformed
just a bit of a break from the norm
just a little somethin' to break the monotony
of all that hardcore dance that has gotten to be
a little bit out of control it's cool to dance
but what about the groove that soothes that moves romance
give me a soft subtle mix
and if ain't broke then don't try to fix it
and think of the summers of the past
adjust the base and let the alpine blast
pop in my CD and let me run a rhyme
and put your car on cruise and lay back cause this is summertime
Chorus
Verse Two: Fresh Prince
school is out and it's a sort of a buzz
but back then I didn't really know what it was
but now I see what have of this
the way that people respond to summer madness
the weather is hot and girls are dressing less
and checking out the fellas to tell 'em who's best
ridin around in your jeep or your benzos
or in your nissan stting on lorenzos
back in Philly we be ou in the park
a place called the plateau is where everybody go
guys out hunting and girls doing likewise
honking at the honey in front of you with the light eyes
she turn around to see what you beeping at
it's like the summers a natural afrodesiac
and with a pen and pad I compose this rhyme
to hit you and get you equipped for the summer time
Chorus
Verse Three: Fresh Prince
it's late in the day and I ain't been on the court yet
hustle to the mall to get me a short set
yeah I got on sneaks but I need a new pair
cause basketball courts in the summer got girls there
the temperature's about 88
hop in the water plug just for old times sake
break to ya crib change your clothes once more
cause you're invited to a barbeque that's starting at 4
sitting with your friends cause y'all remincise
about the days growing up and the first person you kissed
and as I think back makes me wonder how
the smell from a grill could spark up nostalgia
all the kids playing out front
little boys messin round with the girls playing double-dutch
while the DJ's spinning a tune as the old folks dance at your family reunion
then six o'clock rolls around
you just finished wiping your car down
it's time to cruise so you go to the summertime hangout
it looks like a car show
everybody come lookin real fine
fresh from the barber shop or fly from the beauty salon
every moment frontin and maxin
chillin in the car they spent all day waxin
leanin to the side but you can't speed through
two miles an hour so everybody sees you
there's an air of love and of happiness
and this is the Fresh Prince's new defintion of summer madness
Chorus

^^^ what is that supposed to prove? That AC/DC lyrics are not so good, Pink Floyd's are deep and insightful and Fresh Prince has nearly as many lyrics in a 3 minute song as Bob Dylan?
Posted by: Wow. | June 25, 2010 at 01:37 PM
I don't think AC/DC or Floyd would fit into any of the genres mentioned by Green. Not sure where this is going.
Posted by: Naturelle | June 25, 2010 at 02:13 PM
My point was well written songs can come out of hip hop, its not all about f bombs and random bs, how is summertime any different than something written by acdc or pink floyd, two icons of the music industry. One thing that is cool about hip hop is the commentary is has on its surroundings, i dont think you get that in other genres other than maybe Reggae.
Posted by: Green | June 25, 2010 at 02:55 PM
It's funny to ready the lyrics to "Back In Black" because they're TOTALLY hip-hop. If you were to speak them instead of singing them, it'd fit in perfectly with that genre.
Posted by: Vandelay | June 25, 2010 at 03:17 PM
Oof, that should say "read the lyrics" not "ready the lyrics".
Posted by: Vandelay | June 25, 2010 at 03:18 PM
I love N9ne, Krizz and Kutt. Strange Music has some great product out there right now. Kutt Calhoun's album was just released and has some awesome tunes. Krizz Kaliko's Genius was just that. That was my favorite album last year. The best. N9ne's show was just reviewed by the New York Times after he blew up in Brooklyn. At least New York gets it. I have to admit seeing Krizz Kaliko's show wasn't as diverse as his album, and could have used a live band, but it was still fun. Go Strange or go home.

I HATE RAP.
BUT.......
I respect Tech N9ne's Kansas City attitude.
I dont go to his shows dont wanna hear his recordings .... but I will give this man props for making in the business, however the heck he does it.
I have seen his vans and ads and stuff, AND I SAY ... "good job to him". He aint hatin or hurtin anyone, he just doing his thing. ... and he appears to do quite well at what he does ( did you notice the type of car? ).
I have to give a man props who does it like that IN KANSAS CITY.. HE IS KANSAS CITY BASED....
SO no matter what ....
I got his back,
he is one of us,
HE IS A KANSAS CITY MUTHAFKA I GOT HIS BACK
He has done well for himself and I am proud of him.
If you got nothing nice to say, why bother ragging on him? save it for some other crappy rapper who comes to town, but maybe give Tech N9ne a break.
PS
I "hate on" a lot .....
I am the the king hater of the dump, but I try to balance it by giving props when they are due ....... and Tech N9ne is due some props.
