Eric Tessmer Band at the Trouser Mouse in Blue Springs tonight. 9:00 show, $5 cover. Face shredding blues guitarist from Austin. Definitely worth seeing!

Scion Garage Fest was great. Got a review of five of the bands on my blog. Will definitely be at the Record Bar tomorrow for Valient Thorr and Howl, but I'll be rocking my HAMMERLORD shirt and supporting one of the best current metal bands around!

Went to catch ALICE IN CHAINS at Sandstone. They were good, their new vocalist does a great job of fronting the band. I know it may not be the same without LAYNE STALEY. But I, for one salute them for carrying on. Plus both openers were fine as well - hadn't seen the DEFTONES in awhile but I especially liked MASTODON. Love the way that (now) that Sandstone has a midnight curfew. That 11 pm curfew when most events close down at 10:30 or so is SO lame! Hope they don't close Sandstone down! Since they tore out the front section seats, it's like the 'new' City Market - only you don't have to deal with the downtown KCMO traffic. Bubba said it, don't forget it.

no review on Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi? Kinda surprised bout that. The two of them put on a great show Friday night at the Voodoo. Derek is a once in a generation player. So tasteful, smooth, powerful, subline... words can't accurately describe it.

Joe, I saw DT the last time he played the Voodoo and while I was blown away with his playing and the band's performance, the reviewer at that time (don't think it was TF) seemed somewhat less than impressed by it all. If I remember correctly, Mr.Trucks just wasn't charismatic enough for him.

Pellboy, I was at that DT show as well. Very enjoyable, a sublime performance. A friend who attended the Friday night show said it was also very well done, almost like a Susan Tedeschi show backed by The Derek Trucks band.
I had thought about going, but the high ticket price along with the Voodoo's Gestapo screening tactics for entrance kept me away.
Instead, I went to see The Eric Tessmer Band perform again at the friendly confines of The Trouser Mouse in Blue Springs. Awesome performance, I highly recommend you check him out when he passes thru again on 10/27, on the way back to Austin from an east coast swing.

Pellboy,
While DT doesn't visually show a lot of emotion, his playing has it all. I guess it is all in the beholder, but I actually think his understated and humble approach shows a tremendous amount of charisma. He's gifted. No doubt about it, he is blessed with an ability that rarely comes around.

@onthemark: what are you referring to here?
"the Voodoo's Gestapo screening tactics for entrance kept me away."
Just curious...

Matt, perhaps I was a bit over the top with my description!
Just that I for one am tired of being treated like a criminal trying to enter the Voodoo Lounge. Here I am, a paying customer, yet I am forced to stand in line, have to pass through a couple of security ID checkpoints and metal detectors, get in yet another line etc., all the while being confronted by rude employees.
Not the sort of entrance that puts me in a good mood, know what I mean?
Posted by: onthemark | October 04, 2010 at 03:15 PM
Not to answer for OTM, but I agree that the bouncers are a bit much at Voodoo. Big thug like fellas patting you down and wanding you? Metal detectors? I realize it's similar to that at SC but I think they are a bit over the top as well. I don't recall DTB shows being havens for terrorists, not to mention the tactics makes for a long wait to get in. At least that has been my experience. Not sure I would let it prevent me from going to a show there, especially DTB with Susan Tedeschi, but it is definitely a pain in the ass. I would normally think it is just the way things are these days but then again, I can't help but notice that the Midland, Knuckleheads, the Uptown, Grinders etc do not deploy such measures. I guess they don't feel the need to put on a show.

damn, I haven't been to a show at the Voodoo in a while...I didn't realize it was so bad now. I don't ever remember being patted down there and I have certainly seem some more "rowdy" shows there than Derek Trucks.
Posted by: Matt | October 04, 2010 at 03:22 PM
I guess I've missed out on these tactics as well but it's been awhile since I've been to a show at the Voodoo...Dave Mason back in January, I believe.
And agreed, Joe and otm...I appreciate Mr.Trucks understated playing, I think it somewhat sets him apart from his contemporaries. Would have loved to have gone the other night with Mrs.Trucks sharing the bill, but had prior commitments at the AR BBQ.

Maybe the security is hit or miss there. I'm not there enough to tell. It was like that for Gov't Mule and DTB last year but maybe not for Lucinda. I can't recall. I just know that there have been times when it is over teh top. I was somewhat baffled because I would think if you are going to enact over the top security measures, it would be for the casino in it's entirety, not just the live music venue.
So PB, was Otis Day and the Knights playing at AR this year?
Back to the thread, well, sort of...this pretty much says it all.

I cant see Sandstone sticking around much longer, not with the new Wizards stadium being built down the road. Having the large outdoor shows there might work better, much more to do in the area, nicer and cleaner, larger stage options, I think Sandstone is hurt by its stage size, seems like I read that in the past. I would like to buy two chairs from Sandstone if it closes! I will say, seating and views kinda suck with the stadium / arena set up, I like the set up of Sandstone type places, think it works better, maybe get rid of the lawn, its kinda pointless.

The show with Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks on Friday at the VooDoo was excellent! I wholly credit the band and not the venue. I was dreading the expected line and wait to get in after reading other reviews of the VooDoo Lounge here but we walked right in. Yes, there was an absurd security wanding at the door from a not so friendly guard and terrible bar service but the show quickly made my irritation pass.

Ha ha, NEW...no Otis (my MAN!)this year (I did actually go that year), only saw some TUF and Liverpool and the countless cover bands/DJs playing at the private parties. I do remember when it was a bigger deal as far as national acts go...saw Big Head Todd & Monsters and Ike Turner Revue (not to mention Otis) at some past AR BBQs.
