Joe Pug is not to be missed.

What jumps out on this list, by that I mean what jumps out that is not a major act, anything not to miss?

Lookin' forward to Bob Schneider at Knuckleheads this Thursday. His show there last summer was quite a surprise. I had never seen him live and he and his band were a lot of fun. He records all of his shows and sells them after the gig and I still get a laugh listening to his wonderful between-song banter. It was a memorable show and this Thursday night should be no different.

note to self-
Sept 10th 2011 will be a good day/night to catch up on some summer blockbuster movies, nothing else going on, at least no where worthy of going to, that night/day.

I'm going to Des Moines, Iowa on May 12th to see Bon Jovi at the Wells Fargo Arena. I got behind the stage tickets for $17.50 plus fees. I missed their March 2010 show at the Sprint Center. I've read that Phil X will be replacing Richie Sambora while, he's gone into a rehab clinic for his alcohol problem. I've read that their April 30th show at Jazz Festival in New Orleans went well with the replacement guitarist.

Kurt, what is a phil X?
It is too bad they are playing without Sambora, but at least Richie wasnt "out in public" making an ass of himself before he went in, it was pretty quiet.

Spiker,FYI just in case you are aka Dump Troll, Crossroads Music Fest is not usually at Grinders. It is spread across several venues including the Brick, Czar Bar and Crosstown Station which you will be happy to know has some of the most magnificent bathroom facilities in town. I mean that too. Absolutely stellar!

Why isn't the Widespread show listed? What do the contributors of BRT have against WSP? I remember that last years show didn't even warrant a review. Really? I mean it isn't like these guys haven't headlined major festivals and put on an incredible show year after year. Tim?

The Show,
Phil X is short for Phil Xeninis and he's an LA session musician. I've read that this musician toured with Triumph years ago also.
Posted by: Kurt | May 05, 2011 at 11:55 AM
Interesting Kurt,
If he could fill in for a trio, I guess he can do Sambora's part, but then again, it kind of verges on being what people accuse YES and Stryz of. I mean, one of the best things about Bon Jovi is they are mostly all original membersbut regardless it should be a good show, have fun.
Posted by: The Show | May 05, 2011 at 12:21 PM
Not sure if this will make you feel better Steve but BTR seems to have an aversion to the jam/jamgrass scene in general. I've yet to see a reference to some of the great original local bands like Brother Bagman, Super Massive Black Holes, Grassgrove or touring bands like Cornmeal or Emmit-Nershi when they do a stop here. They do OK with promting Wakarusa and did a post about WSP the last go around though so I guess it's not totally ignored.

Played guitar for Triumph? How can they even exist without Rik Emmett? That would be akin to Van Halen sans Eddie...worse actually due to the vocals aspect. Used to love Triumph back in the day , but apparently I've been out of touch.
Posted by: pellboy | May 05, 2011 at 03:56 PM
The musician Phil Xeninis was not replacing Rick Emmett. I've seen some U-Tube videos of Triumph on their 86/87 Sport of Kings tour and there were FOUR on stage. He was in addition to the core THREE members of Triumph.

Speaking of Canuckleheads....
Did you know that the Queen of England (personally) owns ALL of Canada (and other places too), and if she wanted to, she could sell the whole country to China.

@Kurt...oh, that makes more sense. After seeing your post though, did some research on Triumph and I guess he did perhaps replace him for a stretch as well and that Rik has sort of been on the outs with Gil Moore and Mike Levine and outside of an appearance or two, has nothing to do with the band anymore. No wonder why I haven't heard much about them in recent years. Nothing against the others, but Rik was definitely the talent behind that trio.

The Bon Jovi show yesterday in Des Moines, Iowa was a good show. I missed the end of the show and the person I went with wanted to leave to avoid the crowds. We drove back the same night and it's about 180 miles. I saw them from 8:00 until 10:00 and probably missed 15 to 20 minutes. The show started with 'Lost Highway' and I thought they were opening with 'Blood on Blood' and maybe the absence of Richie Sambora changed the set list. Phil Xenidis was his replacement and did a fine job of filling in for him. The show must go on without Richie Sambora and obvious that Jon Bon Jovi takes the limelight from the rest of the band.
The stage show was cool and they had a variable LED video system. It would move around with separate pieces at times. In back of the stage, had durable robot controlled video screens that could be walked on like stairs. I had behind the stage tickets and had a great view of the stage and band. They had 360 degree staging and sold out the entire arena. I believe the Wells Fargo Arena has a little less capacity than, Sprint Center.

I wanted to mention that a highlight for me was 'Runaway' from 1982 and that must have gone back to their first album. I wasn't thrilled when they segue into the Door's 'Roadhouse Blues' and Bob Seger's 'Old Time Rock and Roll' during 'Bad Medicine'. It would have been better to play that song by itself.
Overall, it was an excellent show. I regret not staying to the end and the person I went with wanted to leave a little early to get on the road. It was about a 3 hour drive to Des Moines, Iowa and got back at 1:15am.
Posted by: Kurt | May 18, 2011 at 09:09 AM
Thanks for the review Kurt, that is too bad you picked someone to go with who leaves early esp when it was still early. Get home at 1:15?? or see the whole show at get home at 1:30??
Whenever I plan road trips, I advise EVERYONE, before hand, that NO WAY ARE WE leaving early, dont even start.... dont go if you dont like it.
I never understood leaving anything ( concerts, ballgames etc etc, no matter the score) early, we are there to deviate from what we are going back to, why go back early?
Glad you had a good time, thanks for reporting.

I wanted to mention some of the numbers that Bon Jovi are pulling in on their arena tour. I read a review in a St Louis newspaper and Bon Jovi had the highest attendance in history at the Scottrade Center with 20,648. It helps to have 360 degree staging. I've read that they sold out the Bradley Center in Milwaukee also and no figure was given. There was no review of the Des Moines, Iowa show that I was at on May 12th and the arena was filled completely. I believe that Bon Jovi got the top tour of 2010 award and it helped that U2 had to postpone some 2010 shows until 2011. Next up for Bon Jovi is a stadium tour of Europe. It was correct is saying that most of their fan base is women and it was like 2 to 1 with gals to guys at the show.
