Review: Theory of a Deadman
One of the most detested acts in rock, Nickelback is mercilessly mocked by legions of music fans who delight in deriding the band's sound. Nickelback's immensely successful but critically maligned brand of pop-oriented metal has made it the butt of countless jokes. Very few members of the capacity audience of over 2,500 were laughing at Nickelback's sound Friday at The Midland Theater. Theory of a Deadman, a Nickelback knockoff band, headlined a bargain-priced concert that provided an entertaining start to a summer weekend. The four members of Theory of a Deadman do little to conceal their devotion to the approach...

Best news in a long time. Plus I'm just happy The Theory of a Deadman review is no longer burning my eyes at the top of the page.

Good to hear, hope all goes well with their album and tour. Was a fan of the Heaven & Hell version so I hated to see that die with Dio, but this is one of the rare reunions that actually intrigues me.

Oh sure, now that Geezer's a geezer!
Posted by: Old School | August 16, 2011 at 02:00 PM
What other bands should get back together for an album and tour, would love to see Floyd but its to late with Wright passing a couple years ago, it just wouldnt be the same. Anyone have any other ideas for reunions?
Posted by: Green | August 16, 2011 at 02:09 PM
Green, the obvious ones for me are Dire Straits and/or Talking Heads as they seem to be the ONLY two that have stayed apart since initially disbanding. Even though I never saw either band play live and would relish that opportunity, part of me respects them even more for resisting the reunion money grab because let's face it, despite artistic overtures and putting differences aside and all the other BS reasons, getting back together is mostly about cashing in.
Posted by: Pellboy | August 16, 2011 at 02:17 PM
I vote for The Smiths, but it will never happen.
Posted by: Matt | August 16, 2011 at 02:25 PM
There aren't a lot of choices where all of the original band members are still alive, when talking about bands from 20+ years ago.
I'll put my vote in for Guns N Roses though. Need to get Slash, Axl, and Duff back together at the very least.
Posted by: joeboo | August 16, 2011 at 03:05 PM
The Jayhawks are back together!
Posted by: JJ | August 16, 2011 at 03:40 PM
I had tickets to see them on their last reunion tour with Pantera opening up in Denver. They cancelled due to Ozzy's voice. I'm still bummed I missed that show. I'll never see Pantera now, but maybe I can still see the original Sabbath lineup...

Guns & Roses. Basically Slash and Duff back with Axl.

Jellyfish would be the end all for me.
Posted by: wadkc | August 16, 2011 at 04:42 PM
Great! I mean I was depressed to know that RONNIE JAMES DIO passed on over a year ago. Some fans and critics SPECULATED that now..... the original BLACK SABBATH would reunite. Hope they can STILL cut it - playing live. Bubba said it.
Posted by: Bubba | August 16, 2011 at 06:40 PM
Sometimes its just good to let a thing die a dignified death. I prefer to remember Black Sabbath. I don't needs some half-assed reunion spoiling that memory.
Posted by: Ronnie | August 16, 2011 at 09:19 PM
If Sabbath does reunite, and do a tour, I hope they play the Midland or Uptown..... anywhere but the dump on 18th street, that place sucks. Why doesnt that place install real bathrooms?
Posted by: DT | August 16, 2011 at 09:31 PM
Back in the day, I saw the Dio version of Sabbath on the 'Mob Rules' tour and they rocked. I also saw Ozzy with Randy Rhoads, so I am pretty happy with that. But to digress, I'm with you on a Jellyfish reunion, Wadkc! We Power Pop fans salivate at the mere thought. But for now, on the Power Pop front, I am content with the new Fountains Of Wayne disc.
Posted by: Geordan | August 17, 2011 at 09:45 AM
Always wanted to see Alice Cooper reunite with his original band, but that can't happen now as at least one of those guys has passed away.
Posted by: onthemark | August 17, 2011 at 11:12 AM
The one band that I would love to see live if they reunited would be Cream. But I don't think the egos in that band would ever let something like that happen long term for a tour. The other would be Led Zepplin with Jason Bonham playing drums. That is probably as close as you could get to a true reunion with a band having a deceased member. JBLZE was awesome earlier this year at Harrah's. Too bad the crowd wasn't all that great. I'd like to see The Who again with Zack Starkey and Pino Palladino with Daltry and the Townsends but I don't think that will happen since it seems that Pete doesn't want to or can't tour anymore. Will just have to go see Daltrey perform Tommy in October with Simon Townshend in his band. As great as Roger Waters was last year it would be even better if the rest of the living members Floyd would have been with him. I think the Stones are too far gone and wouldn't want to spend the money to see them live anymore.

Hey Steve. Cream reunited in 2005. They did 4 shows at RAH in May of that year, then 4 more at MSG. I was lucky enough to see one of the MSG shows. It was a good show but as you would expect, lacked the power that can be heard on Live Cream Volumes I and II as well as the live disc from Wheels of Fire.
If you are interested, www.wolfgangsvault.com (Bill Graham's archives) has some incredible live recordings of Cream as well as about 1,000 other bands you can stream for free, Sabbath included.

I figured you'd be clued into that one, PB.

Othermark, the surviving members of the 'original' ALICE COOPER group have reunited several times. Look on You Tube. Most recent gig was the Golden Gods Award show. On the VH1 Classic special they sometimes air has just one song. However, on You Tube they have fan videos (decent quality) of maybe 2 or 3 songs that ALICE, MICHAEL BRUCE and the others played. With that particular reunion, ALICE and crew simply waited TOO long. There was talk of a reunion as early as the early '80's we true fans had a VERY long wait. They finally had a one-off reunion at that seedy club in 1997, something like $500 a ticket for a 40 minute set. I've heard a bootleg CD of that show and it was fair quality - certainly NOTHING to brag about.
Posted by: Bubba | August 17, 2011 at 01:27 PM
Sure wish Milli Vanilli would reunite.
Posted by: Glorp | August 17, 2011 at 01:40 PM
New, I remember those RAH and MSG shows. I just know they wouldn't or probably couldn't pull off a full fledge tour without the band imploding like it did in the 60's. Plus, I don't think Ginger Baker could pull it off physically. If I remember correctly one of the reasons they did the shows was because Ginger was in pretty bad shape financially. The Who toured in the mid to late 90's becasuse Entwisle was virtually broke. Regardless, that would have been a cool show to see. It is sad when your music heros get old and don't have the chops they once did (See Jerry Garcia circa 1995). It sucks to get old, but just think about the people who don't get to do it.
Posted by: Steve | August 17, 2011 at 01:51 PM
Steve, I believe I heard that The Who will reform next year to tour playing Quadrophenia. Townsend said that he was just waiting for Daltrey to finish the Tommy tour. Zack and Pino will be on drums and bass.
Posted by: joe | August 17, 2011 at 01:51 PM
Yeah, joe's right, supposedly they came up with some sort of hearing device that would allow Pete to tour again and heard he's onboard. Even talk of a possible album which is good news to me as I'm probably one of the few that actually liked Endless Wire. Perhaps my favorite band all-time so I maybe biased, but I caught their show from that tour in Omaha and I thought it was very good. Zack especially stood out...very Keith-like.
Posted by: Pellboy | August 17, 2011 at 02:02 PM
Pell/Joe, that is awesome news. I've seen lots of shows (although not as many as most of you guys), but The Who were far and away the best that I ever saw. And that was on a tour that was pretty muched panned by reviewers, Arrowhead in 88' (I think). Would love to see Quadrophenia live. Planning on taking my 10 y/o son to see Daltrey. He plays Tommy over and over on his I-Touch.
Posted by: Steve | August 17, 2011 at 02:15 PM
Bubba, thanks for the tip, I will check that out!
Posted by: onthemark | August 17, 2011 at 02:22 PM
Eff the reviewers, I dug that Arrowhead show as well. Counting the Daltrey Spirit Fest show w/ The Ox and Simon Townshend, I've seen The Who 8 times (sadly none w/ Moon) and while they've varied some in terms of quality, they've ALL been great. Again though, such a big fan, I'm probably not the most objective reviewer.
Posted by: Pellboy | August 17, 2011 at 02:27 PM
I'm with ya Pell, if it weren't for the Beatles, for me The Who would be GOAT.
Posted by: Steve | August 17, 2011 at 02:31 PM
Steve,
I'm taking my 19 yr old daughter to see Tommy. She can't wait to see it.
Zack is a beast on the drum kit for them. He clearly makes a huge impact. I just wish he was with Roger for the Tommy shows. When you see the Who with Zack (I got to see a MSG show days after Entwhistle's passing) it becames very apparent in the live setting that the drums are the Who's lead instrument -- not guitar. Getting Zack back there gives them the added punch that Kenny Jones could never deliver.
Posted by: joe | August 17, 2011 at 02:39 PM
Joe, I've seen them perform live on tv in recent years and no doubt, Zack definately is the next best thing to Moon the Loon. You can tell it wasn't his dad who he emulated playing. I frame albums as art and hang in my basement. The Who's "Who Are You" is a centerpiece and my boy knows the significance of what is written on the back of the chair Moon is sitting in. You gotta raise them right.
Posted by: Steve | August 17, 2011 at 03:02 PM
Not to be taken away??
Posted by: joe | August 17, 2011 at 03:23 PM
That's it. Moon died right after that album was released. It wasn't intentional, just fit given the circumstances of his death.
Posted by: Steve | August 17, 2011 at 03:38 PM
Oh yeah, The Who kick ass! Can't even tell you how many times I played 'Who's Next' both on vinyl and 8-track (am I dating myself?)
Saw them at Kemper on their 'Face Dances' tour, probably 1982 or so. That was with Kenny Jones on drums. A far cry from Keith to say the least.
Check this out. A buddy of mine saw The Who perform at a Shawnee Mission high school back in the 60's. Not only that, he took pictures and gave me a set of them. Young 'Who' in black and white, how cool is that?
Posted by: onthemark | August 17, 2011 at 03:41 PM
One of my first shows ever was the 1976 tour with Moon. 15th row. Just the 4 of them. I couldn't have been older than 13 or 14. I am not sure if it was my lack of concert experience at the time or just plan intuition but it was like a freight train coming at you for 2 hours straight. 35 year later, it remains one of the highlights of my life.
I could see them playing SMHS in the 60s, OTM. Going back to Cream, I have a list of tour stops on their first run through the US in 1967 and there are a couple of high schools on there. Same with Jimi. We all too often lose sight of the fact that shows back then were not on the scale of what they are now or even what they became in the 70s. The Fillmores and Winterland were the premiere concert venues in the country and they held what? 1,500 and 4,000 respectively?
My how things have changed.
Posted by: NEW | August 17, 2011 at 04:27 PM
@ Steve. I think Ginger is actually doing OK. FYI, the story I hear is those reunion shows werd meant to help out Jack Bruce who had a liver transplant or something. I also heard teh reason they were not able to continue touring the US after the MSG shows was due to Ginger's inability to obtain a work visa but that does not make a whole lot of sense given he lived in Parker, CO at one point.
But you are dead on about Jerry. He fell prey to the boy pretty heavily that last year or two. Such a shame
Posted by: NEW | August 17, 2011 at 04:42 PM
NEW. I didn't realize you saw Moon in 76. What a tremendous memory and count me as extremely jealous. The power of those four will never be matched again, imo.
Posted by: joe | August 17, 2011 at 04:52 PM
Can't beleive I never mentioned that one. It was only my 3rd concert (Stones were first, Return to Forever was 2nd) but it remains in my top 5 shows ever. No wonder I ended up on this twisted path.
Posted by: NEW | August 17, 2011 at 05:09 PM
New, saw the Dead twice in 95. April Fools day in Memphis at the Pyramid. Jerry was on his game and the show was killer. Saw them again less than two months later at the last day of a three day run in Vegas at the Silver Bowl. It was a hot weekend and it took its toll on Jerry as he was barely audible with his vocals. Had plans to be in Chicago for the last shows of the tour, which obviously were the last ones ever and had to sell my tix because the wife was maid of honor in a friends wedding. I have never let her forget that. I know Ginger has had his bouts with the boy over the years himself. Fact is those guys are just gettin old (I think Ginger is in his 70's) as much as I hate to say it.
Posted by: Steve | August 17, 2011 at 06:13 PM
OTM... i was at that show at Shawnee Mission South. So was my brother. they appeared about the time "i can see for miles" was getting airplay.
and get this... they weren't the headlining band.
they opened for The Buckinghams.
Posted by: fiddler | August 18, 2011 at 07:16 AM
hey NEW... you mentioned Jimi... one night in Hollywood i was at an AUTO show at the Palladium on Sunset. Delaney and Bonnie and Friends were the headline act and me and friend of mine were hanging around not far from the stage when they brought out one of their 'friends' -- Jimi. he did three songs--Foxy Lady, Wind Cries Mary, and the other i can't recall. he played behind his head and lit his guitar on fire. i can't recall the date, but wasn't long after Monterey i think. '69?

I have said it before, can you imagine a GNR tour on the 25th anniversary of 'Appetite" with the original band, playing the full album? What kind of money would that tour bring it?
Posted by: Steve J | August 18, 2011 at 09:04 AM
I've been waiting for a Kinks reunion for years. Lord knows, they've been dangling the possibility in front of the press long enough, but now that Pete Quaife passed last year, it's no longer to be.
As for Ozzy & co. please don't. There must be another way to make some scratch.
