Review: Selena Gomez
Photos by Ryan McElwain / Friend of B2R For the record: Steely Dan did not sell out Starlight Theatre this summer. Neither did Peter Gabriel. Or Janet Jackson. Thursday night, Selena Gomez sold out the place. Signs at the parking gates at the east entrance warned anyone was hoping to drive in and buy tickets. At the box office on the east side, two young fans were hoping to buy/scalp a pair, but it didn’t look like anyone was selling. Gomez is a Disney Channel leading lady (“Wizards of Waverly Place”) who has turned her TV stardom into a successful...

Review: Ke$ha
Photos by Susan Pfannmueller/Special to The Star On the weekend we celebrate the spirit of hard work and labor unions, Ke$ha’s Get $leazy Tour strutted into Kansas City. If the opposite of work is play, then her show is a garish anti-labor celebration, a crass 75-minute pep rally for all things self-indulgent, especially sex and partying. We’ve seen this show before: Ke$ha sold-out the Midland in mid-February, drawing about 3,000 fans. This time, the show was moved to the much larger but just-as-dignified Starlight Theatre, where nearly 5,000 fans came to watch her gaudy spectacle. Some of the audience members...

Maybe it's just me or my computer, but Wilco's website blows. That is all.
Oh and wonder if Nick Lowe is opening this show as in St.Louis?
Posted by: Pellboy | September 02, 2011 at 11:49 AM
nick lowe would be cool.
Posted by: fiddler | September 02, 2011 at 12:35 PM
I think it's just your computer. They have a great website.
Posted by: Andrew | September 02, 2011 at 12:59 PM
Not overly familiar with Wilco; will this show be a pussy ass mellow fest BS show, or is this going to be the rock and roll comeback the world's been waiting on?
Posted by: TK | September 02, 2011 at 01:12 PM
Wilco is pretty laid back, i hear great things but they never really clicked with me, maybe i will buy a tick and see if something changes.
Posted by: Green | September 02, 2011 at 01:32 PM
Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. For some reason, I'm not able to navigate the site very well. I can't even pull up the tour list. Oh well.
Posted by: Pellboy | September 02, 2011 at 01:33 PM
The tour list comes up but no details on kc show for ticket sale dates or price.
Posted by: Green | September 02, 2011 at 01:35 PM
Saw them last year(?) at Crossroads and they were great. They can be laid back but they can rock too. I'm pretty sure that show was sold out. Good times.
Posted by: Musicgal | September 02, 2011 at 01:55 PM
that was in Oct. '09; biggest crowd ever at Xroads -- nearly 3000. this uptown show will sell out in minutes, considering there are no shows (yet) in st. lou, columbia or omaha.
Posted by: Tim Finn | September 02, 2011 at 02:04 PM
I wonder why they are not going back to play at crossroadskc? Any ideas Kilby?
Posted by: Jake | September 02, 2011 at 02:42 PM
They are doing a two night (sold out) stint in St. Louis during the first leg of the tour in October. That being said, you're right it will sell out quickly. Kind of surprised they aren't playing the Midland this time around.
Posted by: Scot | September 02, 2011 at 02:45 PM
TF, there actually is a show scheduled (and already soldout) in St.Louis @ the Peabody (formerly Kiel) Opera House next month.

The Pageant presents WILCO with special guest Nick Lowe at Peabody Opera House on October 4!
This event is sold out.
Posted by: Pellboy | September 02, 2011 at 02:48 PM
Oops, you're right, just one night in St. Louis. I must have had a flashback to previous tours.
Posted by: Scot | September 02, 2011 at 02:59 PM
Uncle Tupelo's cover of Effigy off of the No Alternative compilation is one of my favorite covers of all time. Although Gov't Mule played a mean version of it a few years back at Crossroads KC.
Posted by: Steve | September 02, 2011 at 03:06 PM
The new album is supposed to rock more than the last one, which is, I believe, my least favorite effort of theirs.
Uptown will be a killer venue for them!
Posted by: Mike A | September 02, 2011 at 03:23 PM
They're a nice mix of pussy, mellow-fest bs and some rock n roll comeback stuff. Nels Cline is a guitar wizard live and they put on a helluva show. I hope the new album is good though, they haven't put out an album I loved since A Ghost Is Born.

""They're a nice mix of pussy, mellow-fest bs and some rock n roll comeback stuff""
You better careful talking like that, or Kilby is going to threaten to hunt you down and beat you up... (or was that threaten to feel you up and beat you off?)(hmmmm... it one of those... anyway... just be careful, they are kind of sensitive around here) ;)
as for me?? LMAO... good one Matt.

Crossroads show in 2009 was great, if kind of cold ("we'll play some autumnal songs!")...Uptown will sell out fast. A very, very Merry Christmas!
Posted by: TG | September 02, 2011 at 05:22 PM
They won't play crossroads because it will be December and very cold. If you don't get Wilco, please stay home instead of coming to the show and complaining because they don't sound like what you thought they should sound like. They will sound like what they sound like, nothing more, nothing less.
Posted by: Papoon | September 02, 2011 at 08:08 PM
Oh man this is goinng to be great. Wilco is our fraternity's favorite band, we all just love them. Every time they come to town all of my frat brothers invite the current frat brothers and their girl friends and our wives and to get together at the show. It is the perfect place to catch up with everyone, and talk with everyone with the great music in the background. It is just like old time, getting so drunk, doing shots, having fun. woo-hoo, cant wait.
Posted by: Trey | September 02, 2011 at 11:53 PM
I am driving to Nashville to see them at the Ryman, and going to STL to see them, and now I will get to see them at the Uptown too. It's a Saturday night, they will blow the roof off, don't you worry. They are streaming their new CD this weekend on their website. Please don't be "that guy" at their show that always yells for them to play "Whiskey Bottle."

NELS CLINE IS GOD! Oops, I meant good.
Posted by: eddieroot | September 03, 2011 at 08:46 AM
Maybe it's just me or my computer, but Wilco's website blows. That is all.

Thanks for informing us. I am at your site after a long time. Good to see you again.

I'm in for Wilco!
Posted by: onthemark | September 06, 2011 at 09:47 AM
Anyone notice GNR at Sprint Center in November?
Posted by: Steve J | September 09, 2011 at 09:34 AM
I quit caring about Wilco a long time ago -- when they stopped rocking!
Posted by: Rick in PV | September 09, 2011 at 10:34 AM
@Rick in PV-The Wilco show at Crossroads in October 2009 rocked pretty good!
Posted by: onthemark | September 09, 2011 at 11:24 AM
What's the point, otm? I'm now of the mindset that the Mellow Troll is so obsessed with his current crusade, he'd probably accuse Lemmy of softening his sound.
Posted by: Pellboy | September 09, 2011 at 11:38 AM
Pellboy, I am sure that Rick in PV is NOT the dump troll. For one thing, Rick used proper spelling and punctuation which was a sure giveaway!
I figured I would just throw a comment about that Wilco show on here in case anyone else who attended wanted to talk about it. That was my first time seeing them live and I really enjoyed the entire performance!
Posted by: onthemark | September 09, 2011 at 11:52 AM
First time seeing them for me as well and although I enjoyed it for the most part, I must confess that I came away from it a bit underwhelmed. For me, several factors were at work against it...the chilly weather, the incessant talking and visiting around me forced me to move from my original fairly prime spot, the band seemed somewhat detached from the audience and most importantly, my perhaps unrealistic expectations for a band I hadn't seen before.
Again, enjoyable, good show, just a tad less than what I expected. Oh well, can't hit a home run everytime.
Posted by: Pellboy | September 09, 2011 at 12:58 PM
I hear yea PB, been to a couple shows like that, for whatever reason you just cant seem to have the experience others are having. My Morning Jacket show was like that, good set, but for whatever reason it just never overtook me.

Anybody going to see Keller tonight at Crosstown Station?
Posted by: Steve | September 09, 2011 at 02:05 PM
Meh, you see one Keller show, you've seen them all. At least IMHO. Did you go to the Workingman's thing that Molitz did on Wednesday, Steve? I was wondering how that turned out.
Posted by: NEW | September 09, 2011 at 02:12 PM
Was thinking about checking out Keller tonight, haven't seen him in years, thinking it was 03 somewhere in Germany the last time I saw him and he was opening.
Posted by: Green | September 09, 2011 at 02:23 PM
I didn't know about Workingman's Beauty until I looked at the Crosstown Station website this morning. Would have been a cool show to see. Has anyone heard how it was or if they are going to play again? I've never seen Keller but would like to. Had a good friend who passed last year that loved Keller. Unfortunately my Outlaws from AZ are in town so I doubt the better half is gonna let me out of the house though. Sucks for me.
Posted by: Steve | September 09, 2011 at 02:58 PM
Shoot Steve, Keller won't come on until 10:30 or 11:00. Sneak out after the go to bed.
Posted by: NEW | September 09, 2011 at 03:21 PM
Who is opening for Keller?
Posted by: Green | September 09, 2011 at 03:26 PM
I thought it started at 9.
Posted by: Steve | September 09, 2011 at 03:39 PM
If you're lucky, 10. I've never seen an headliner at Crosstown start before 10. It's a 3AM venue.
Posted by: NEW | September 09, 2011 at 05:00 PM
Yeah I am sure that it is your fraternity's official band that doesn't surprise me. Bunch of dbag frat boys drinking bud light and giving high fives sure is my idea of a good time. I can't stand the wilco crowd. full of pretentious pussies acting like they are too cool for school.
I got four tickets for the show at the uptown and I am going to scalp the shit out of the them. Anyone interested?

Nick Lowe opening per their fb page
Posted by: gsp | October 07, 2011 at 10:40 AM
Amazing news gsp! thanks for the scoop. I thought for sure he would only do the first leg and go home. Giddy & speechless. Nick Lowe!!
Posted by: mescalaro | October 07, 2011 at 12:04 PM
Don't always know why bands end up in the venues they do. For example, Wilco sold out so quickly, that The Midland, which they would have also sold out easily, would have been a far better spot for this show. Same thing with The Jayhawks at The Beaumont Club. That show should have been booked at the Uptown. On the other hand, there have been bands recently at Starlight that sold so few tickets that they had to put up a partition to block off the back half of the theater, as well as Sprint Center shows in which the back upper-balcony is curtained off, due to poor sales. Whoever is booking many of the gigs in this town obviously needs to have a wider scope of the market.
Posted by: Keith in KC | October 07, 2011 at 12:23 PM
that nick lowe opener just really sweetened the deal on the ticket price. Keith, you are spot on. The uptown no doubt oversold the bejesus out of this show and those of us on the floor will endure trials and tribulations the Mormon church could only dream of.
Posted by: Professor | October 07, 2011 at 12:35 PM
Saw the Raconteurs at the Uptown a few years ago and the Floor was oversold and crammed as well. Glad I got some balcony seats for this old guy!
Posted by: joe | October 07, 2011 at 01:21 PM
They should move the show to Crossroads, Wilco in the snow would be very nice. Honestly, I think there should be an outdoor show in kc during the winter once a year, maybe early december, jan or feb would be insane but I think it would be kinda cool checking out a band out in the december air, maybe have fire pits, the old oil drum trashcan fires and hot coco, ahh, that would be great!
