Looking for something to do on the cheap or inexpensive tonight? You have a few options, and they're all witinin walking distance of one another:
- Locally Thrown at Crossroads KC, 417 E. 18th St.: Another free event featuring three great local bands: Hearts of Darkness, Making Movies and Diverse, working with local DJs. Showtime is 9 p.m. A raffle will benefit Midwest Music Foundation. The pairings: Hearts of Darkness with DJs Barberic Merits; Making Movies with DJs Brent Tacticl and B-Stee; and Diverse Jazz with DJs Mike Scott and DeeJay Spinstyles. Gates open at 8 p.m. Music begins at sundown.
- Crossroads Block Party: This free event is sponsored by Golden Sounds Records. Eight bands will perform from 5 to 11 p.m. for First Friday crowds on 19th Street between Baltimore and Wyandotte streets. Several food trucks will be on hand. You can see the schedule here.
- First Friday at Midwestern Musical Co., 1830 Locust St.: A free event featuring Deco Auto, celebrating the release of its nifty hard-pop EP “Past Mistakes and Hauntings,” and the Pedaljets. The music starts at 8 p.m.
- Young the Giant, which scored a couple of hits wiith "My Body" and "Cough Syrup," headlines a free show at the Kansas City Live stage in the Power & Light District. Showtime is 8 p.m. It’s a 21-and-older show.
Two good free shows in the KC area tonight (at CrossroadsKC and in Olathe), but it's too darned hot to go to either of 'em. I don't care for CrossroadsKC, but when it's free you can't complain.

Don't make the mistake of judging the evening by the daytime heat when the sun is full bore. I almost skipped out on Fitz & the Tantrums because of that. Awfully hard to leave my AC-cooled abode but instead I just bided my time, got down there about 8:30 blowing off the opening act and enjoyed myself w/o suffering too much. Key was staying out of my normal spot in the crowd up front. As TF said in his review of the show, air was a little thick but not oppressive. I cooled off some w/ my beer runs in Grinders and in fact was surprisingly comfortable out on the fringes of the crowd. Enjoyable show and evening. I've suffered thru much worse in the name of live music.

As much as I'd love to go, I live in Topeka so a trip to KC is two hours round-trip (if I don't hit traffic or get lost in construction) and costs around $25 in gas and tolls. So instead of going to Frontier Park I'll pick up a 20 pack of Boulevard Wheat and watch the Sam Bush dvd that I bought when he was in Olathe in 2009.
