This message came to me on Facebook about the Puddle of Mudd show Friday at the VooDoo Lounge. If you were there, weigh-in and confirm. And if you don't know about the refund offer, read more. / T.F.
Did you hear about the 22-minute Puddle of Mudd show? (14 minutes with the front-'man') When the band started, my friend said "Scantlin's way too f'ed up." We were right at the sound board and there was, effectively, no vocal. Scantlin pissed and moaned about there being no decent mikes in the house, and most in the tiny crowd -- couldn't have been 200 people in there -- seemed to misinterpret his derogatory "Welcome to Missouri" as a "Hello, Kansas City"-type thing rather than a bitter put-down. (Friend wondered how much of the sound problem was setup and mix and how much may have been because Scantlin wasn't moving enough air.)
Harrah's promised refunds and took phone numbers, but there was no announcement or anything, and it seemed to be kind of a here-and-now situation for those in the know. No idea what the prospects are for those who didn't stop by the coffee shop and leave their names and numbers.
It sucks that they screwed their fans and hate to put down what others may like, but in this particular case, who the hell is still (or ever was?) a Puddle of Mudd fan, at least to the point of paying decent money (I'm guessing) to see them?

As you may know I like shorter than longer sets but this might be a some sort of KC record... or it might be just right for taking in Puddle of Mudd.

Tasty tidbit TF... darn TMZ like :)
wasnt there, but Ill chime in,
(why not)...
Screw this has been puke and his dad Fred Douchedirtz... What a loser showing up to drunk to fk... Scanlin has sucked since he screwed(dumped) his band mates and went Hollywood... fk him... and really fk "Fred the limp."
ps
I think we have a new band name...
"those who didn't stop by the coffee shop"

I was there.. it was strange from the start. He appeared to be singing hard, but his lips and what you could BARELY hear of the lyrics were not matching up. At one point I was trying to find the band member who was doing the singing I could make out, but there was no one else singing. Maybe he uses a backing track??? Or he really sucks at lip synching. The other thing I noticed was the lights went pitch black after every song. Could barely see what was going on up on the stage, thought that was strange. The person I was with turned to me at one point and said "This is sad to watch"
Posted by: HowlerKC | August 27, 2012 at 12:14 PM
Howler, did it really only last 20 minutes? How did the crowd react? Did you stop by the coffee shop? Did you complain? Do you want a refund?
Posted by: Ronald Crompton | August 27, 2012 at 01:36 PM
I recall these guys were at their peak when I moved here 11 years ago. Everyon eraved about them and how they were going to be the next big thing. I never did understand what all the hype was about.
Posted by: NEW | August 27, 2012 at 02:06 PM
Seems bizarre. Saw them at The Midland not that long ago and they were surprisingly decent.

Posted on band's FB page yesterday:
Our deepest apologies to ALL of our POM fans. Due to a family emergency, the remaining Puddle of Mudd dates from June 26th to June 30th have been cancelled. We apologize for the inconvenience and we will make sure we come back soon.
Posted by: Dio Fan | August 27, 2012 at 03:19 PM
June 26th to June 30th??
Was that a copy/paste?
do you mean Aug 26-30th
Or is the band so out of it that they dont know the month?
Posted by: James | August 27, 2012 at 03:26 PM
I TOLD YOU!!! THEY ARE ALL ON POT!!! THEY NEED TO GET OFF THE POT!!!
Posted by: Bruce | August 27, 2012 at 03:27 PM
Their big hit "She Hates Me," sounds totally like a cross between "I saw your mommy" by Suicidal Tendencies and "Summer Lovin" from Grease.

This is on another topic. Did you know that the Kiss/Motley Crue show is tonight in Maryland Heights, MO (St. Louis)? Why are we missing this tour and they were in Tulsa, OK on Sunday.
Posted by: Kurt | August 27, 2012 at 07:11 PM
Great question Kurt, it would be nice to have someone who could get us a valid answer to it.

Posted by: Steve | August 28, 2012 at 07:47 AM
I watched a video of an earlier show and Wes is clearly lip syncing. I would hazard a guess that is their standard operating procedure and something was wrong with the vocal track in KC. That and Wes was on the pot.
Posted by: BillyB | August 28, 2012 at 08:25 AM
Honestly, wtf is more lame than some douchebag rock singer lip syncing? That is the lamest thing this side of jacking up gasoline prices for any possible reason they can dream up..... That is the lamest thing this side of the dump still using porta potties. HOW LAME??? SOOOOO FKG LAME!!!
Posted by: Paul | August 28, 2012 at 08:43 AM
WOW... how lame. He does lip sync... I thought that was reserved for Pop acts... he must be on pot this show as well..

Nice find Robert, thanks.
verdict? GUILTY AS CHARGED!!
Scanlin = Milli Vanilli = FAKE
Posted by: Walter | August 28, 2012 at 11:19 AM
yes, it was about 20 some minutes. Maybe 5 songs, the last one he sang from off stage. You could see Wes sitting between the sound equipment or something. Now here is the question for all who was there? Wasn't it WES who said "Due to Technical difficulties the show is canceled" ?? I thought it was.. first thing ran thru my mind was, how in the heck did I hear him loud and clear say that thru that "bad" mic yet couldn't hear him sing?
Posted by: HowlerKC | August 28, 2012 at 11:59 AM
Me and my friends did not stop by the coffee shop, crowd was pissed but also they didn't seem surprised by the train wreck that it was either. We got out of there pretty quick. we weren't going to waste the night there. we heard Hinder was playing at the Full Throttle Fest so we figured what the heck, see if we can catch a real concert...
Posted by: HowlerKC | August 28, 2012 at 12:02 PM
Thank you for the info Howler,
UdaMan!
Posted by: Ronald Crompton | August 28, 2012 at 12:23 PM
How can it be worth lip-syncing for a show of 200 people.
Posted by: Steve J | August 28, 2012 at 01:57 PM
Good point Steve.. I saw PoM last December at an almost full Midland with Halestorm. I thought they put on a great show. Must have been tough to go from that to 200 or so at VooDoo. Reminded me a lot of Cinderella, they played Midland.. place was packed.. less than year later they are to play .. .CROSSROADS... and probably a few hundred. They cancelled due to last second illness.
Posted by: HowlerKC | August 28, 2012 at 02:24 PM
BUT.. not the fans who showed up fault it was a bad turn out.. put on a freaking show. Strange night...

To go back to someone else digression about KISS/Motley Crue hitting Tulsa and St. Louis and skipping us, in which they state, "Why are we missing this tour and they were in Tulsa, OK on Sunday," I wanted to mention that THE WHO will be playing "Quadrophenia" in it's entirety in Tulsa AND Louisville, Kentucky, early next year, but not here in KC (yet, anyway). I've never seen The Who and it's late in the game, but would love to see this! Townsend's music epitomizes Rock Music to me and I still get chills watching The Who's performances in the film, "The Kids Are Alright."
As for that money-making juggernaut, Kiss, hopefully they will come back after their new album, "Monster" drops in October. I'll probably take crap for this, but I thought their last album, "Sonic Boom" was actually pretty good, in fact, one of the best things they have done in decades. I also liked their show at the Sprint Center back in '09. Almost made me feel like that dorky juvenile member of the Kiss Army that I was back in their heyday. Kiss are truly one of my guilty pleasures. Personally, I'd rather see them without Motley Crue, a band I've never liked. But yeah, how does Tulsa or Louisville rate above us these days?

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=P505zyJfmH4 This might help explain - yikes!!
Posted by: Bigb | August 28, 2012 at 10:36 PM
Just like Omaha rated above us during The Who's last full tour. No worries for me, I'm making the trip to Tulsa. In these types of comments, it seems there's never any mention of the shows we get and those "lesser" cities miss out on. Does seem a bit odd in this case that The Who is passing up KC on their last two tours, but as for the other stuff, just the nature of the biz of these days. And didn't both KISS and Motley Crue play KC within the past 2 or 3 years? Heck, I don't follow them much but it seems the Crue plays KC almost annually. I'm much more concerned with the Knopfler/Dylan show passing us up.
Posted by: pellboy | August 29, 2012 at 08:03 AM
That is a fine opinion and all PB, but it would be nice to have someone who could get us a valid answer to it. Get an answer from someone directly in charge of promoting these tours, it is not rocket science, it is more about connections. ...if only we had someone, like a reporter, with connections to the music business... someone who might ask someone and obtain a real, truthful answer (no speculation or "canned Crue remarks").
Even if the truth hurts, it would be good to know.
Posted by: Bob | August 29, 2012 at 08:17 AM
There are any number of reasons why tours do or don't play a particular city. Industry politics, AEG, vs Live Nation vs The World, money, venue availability, amount of dollars currently out of the marketplace for a particular genre of music, routing, artist or management preference. No matter how connected you are you'll never know the truth. Those that talk don't know. Those that know don't talk.

Mentioning THE WHO in the same thread as Kiss, Motley Crue or Puddle of **** makes me shudder. I've tried to like Kiss (I love basic no frills rock & roll) however Kiss has always seemed lame. Beyond the outfits they simply sound very thin and uninspired. I have more respect for Cheap Trick than these other posers.
Pete Townsend wrote Pinball Wizard for goodness sake. And Keith Moon is a f***king rock and roll god.

The Who and Kiss were mentioned in the same thread, as they both played or will be playing Tulsa and missing us. What, I can't like The Who AND Kiss?? Duly noted....I'll have to update my notes on what's cool, I suppose. It's all Rock % Roll, right?? The diversity of the genre is what keeps me fascinated with it. I love Slayer AND Devo, for instance, and am proud to admit that anywhere! So, yeah, The Who and Kiss are mentioned here (yet again), and as this is a music forum, it seemed like the place to do that.
Posted by: Geordan | August 30, 2012 at 07:58 AM
Geordan - you're right. I suppose I was a little grumpy in my post. I've always been a bit mystified by those who love the music of Kiss. Perhaps I have yet to hear their best material. Plus I know there are a bunch of bands I listen to that others wouldn't care for. That's life.
BTW, your reviews are really well done and appreciated. Keep 'em coming.

Sorry to hear about that PUDDLE OF MUDD gig. They simply have never done much for me. Last time I saw them was in 2001 at the Uptown - as opener for IGGY POP. Sure wish IGGY + the STOOGES would play here. Bubba said it, don't regret it.

And Wes hit rock bottom, according to TMZ, got booted from a plane because he got into a fight because they stopped serving him, so if that's not a parole violation, what is?
Posted by: Steve J | September 04, 2012 at 04:54 PM
Yeah Steve I saw that too.
Its a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll... BUT IT IS A SHORT FAST TRIP DOWN...

And now... is when I stop kicking a man. I hope Wes gets his act together. It is always sad to see someone go through this....unless it is the owners/promoters of Crossroads KC, NO MERCY FOR THEM EVER!!!!
As for Wes, good luck man, you are going to need it.

Scantlin pled "guilty" to felony cocaine possession in July, but the judge agreed to clear his record in 18 months so long as Scantlin obeys all laws ... a condition Scantlin may just have violated.
Bottom line -- if Scantlin actually did cause a mid-air ruckus he could face prison time for the cocaine charge, as well as for public intoxication and interfering with a flight crew.
