Every Thursday in The Star's Preview section, we print photos readers shot at recent local shows. Send yours to [email protected]. It's a sure bet we're going to be inundated with Justin Bieber photos next week, so here's your chance to send us photos of, shall we say, more mature artists. Please.
Phil Palmer of Kansas City sent the above photo of Cherokee Rock Rifle at RecordBar during a Sonic Spectrum tribute to the Doors. "The Cherokees are a must-see band," Phil said. "That Doors show was out of this world."

Are terribly blurry and out of focus cell phone shots okay? If so, then I have TONS of pics to send in!

People, buy a real camera, they only cost 50-150 bucks and are awesome( pics and video)(I recommend Canon) while cell phone pictures are silly, heck cell phones are silly. period.

Please pardon the gate-crashing. I don't have a photo, but would've appreciated reading a review of the Skatalites show which took place at Davey's Uptown last Thursday.
I didn't go, but last night at the Cher UK show, was told that the Skatalites played a solid three-hour set to a packed house, proving once again that ska and reggae still have a following in the area.
Also, maybe an open thread now and then would be helpful for those of us who want to comment outside the boundaries of what's posted.
Thanks - Rick

I'm still waiting for the First Aid Kit review, it was a great show and those swedes sure can sing, not to hard on the eyes either.

Dammit, Geordan, get out there and see more shows!
Posted by: pellboy | October 22, 2012 at 07:46 AM
I actually have a long stretch of about a week and a half in which work has me tied up. The next thing I'm seeing will be Rosie Flores and Marti Brom at Knuckleheads on 11/1, or I might make a right turn and end up at the Midland for the Noel Gallagher/Snow Patrol shindig on that same night - still undecided, which seems to be a common theme around election time. Would love to see Todd Snider tomorrow night, but just can't do it. But November should be hopping. I'm sure I'll run into you at Brooooce's show at the Sprint Center!
Posted by: Geordan | October 22, 2012 at 09:47 AM
I'll fill you in on Todd Snider if B2R can't represent. Am also doing The English Beat next week. You're right, November seems to be packed, there's alot I want to see next month. And yes, I'm definitely looking forward to Springsteen.
Posted by: pellboy | October 22, 2012 at 10:43 AM
I can't believe that The English Beat will have hit KC twice this year and I missed the first show and will likely not be able to attend the second one. But November does look good and there's a few things in December that look promising, so the end of the year is looking good. I was asked by a couple of friends if I am going to The Rainmakers/Belairs show on New Year's eve at Knuckleheads and I am not sure yet. Will definitely be seeing Samantha Fish at Knuckleheads' New Year's Eve EVE show on 12/30. Anyway, I'd love to hear about Todd Snider's show and I think my BTR amigo, onthemark, is also a fan. Maybe he'll be there (??).

Almost more excited about seeing the opener, Jason Isbell's fiance, Amanda Shires, a very attractive and talented lady. And am holding out hope that he might even make an appearance as he's playing w/ Snider and Ms.Shires the following night @ Cains in Tulsa...hmmm....
Posted by: pellboy | October 22, 2012 at 11:17 AM
Geordan, you are correct. I am in for Todd Snider tomorrow night. Also going to see Grace Potter at The Uptown Thursday night. Another upcoming show of interest is Joanne Shaw Taylor at Knuckleheads on Thursday 11/29. Keep that one in mind, I have seen her and she is definitely worth checking out!
Posted by: onthemark | October 22, 2012 at 11:39 AM
I saw Joanne Shaw Taylor the last time she played Knuckleheads, OTM. The only problem I had was when she and her band took an in-between sets break for 90 minutes, which occurred on a week night. A slew of people were upset and left. When she finished her show at around midnight, only about five people were left standing. I remember thinking that she could have sold a lot of merch during that break. Her absence for that period of time was a bit strange, when there were paying customers waiting.
Joanne only ended up selling me and one other guy a cd and appeared to be stoned out of her gourd after taking another 20 minute "break" after her last set and that was after her scary female drummer with dreadlocks told us that they would be down in a few minutes. Hey, touring musicians, what are you gonna do? Joanne is talented, but is in dire need of a manager who can prop her up and point her in the right direction. Having said that, it could be a great show or a train wreck, so I'll probably be there!

Geordan or Pellboy - Do you either of you happen to know the camera policy at the Midland? Don't worry... I turn off the flash so I don't disturb the performers or people around me.
I'm just curious if it's strict or lenient. I also know camera policies can vary with the performer.
Posted by: K | October 22, 2012 at 08:13 PM
The Midland gave me a little crap for a larger camera once, they allow the non-pro cameras, point-and-shoot, don't bring a camera with detachable lens, you will most likely be taking it back to your car.
Posted by: Green | October 23, 2012 at 12:36 AM
K, I usually rely on my wife to take all concert pics when she comes with me so I can't really recall what the policy is at The Midland specifically. I think it's pretty much like Green said.
Posted by: pellboy | October 23, 2012 at 07:50 AM
Again, I'd like to point out that the Star used to hire photographers. Now it just wants you all to work as unpaid laborers for them. Am I the only one that sees this as lame?
And for someone who asked about First Aid Kit: My photos, video, and write up are here: http://toomuchrock.com/shows/firstaidkit.html
Posted by: Sid Much Rock | October 23, 2012 at 08:35 AM
Yeah yeah blah blah Sid...
AND it used to be that not everyone and their fkg dog took a camera to every fkg concert.... only us cool guys used to do it.
So.... If everyone is going to take a camera in, why not allow them to post their pictures for all to see... now shut your face Sid!!

Not sure it's just about saving $ although with the current economic state of the newspaper biz, you might be on to something. In reality, I think having BLOGGERS provide pics is just an extension of the more interactive world we live in. Besides, gives folks a chance to share pics from shows that the B2R/Star staff might miss.
Posted by: pellboy | October 23, 2012 at 11:16 AM
One of my pet peeves is when people misuse the word blogger. Tim and the other people who write articles here are bloggers and the rest of us are just readers and commenters. In pellboy's post, the word readers would have been more appropriate than bloggers. [/rant]
Back on topic, flash or no flash? With point and shoot cameras it's hard to get good pics during shows because of the darkness and moving musicians, and sometimes even the light show can present a problem. I realize that the flash is distracting for the musicians, but should they just deal with it as part of being on stage?
Posted by: LiveMusicFan | October 23, 2012 at 02:30 PM
Nice to see that some of the BTR regulars will be at the Todd Snider show tonight! See you there!
Posted by: kcmom | October 23, 2012 at 03:02 PM
LMF, no flash.
Keep it all on the down low, and they will be easy about it. Buy a $100-$150 simple Canon digital camera (Canon SD1000) learn to adjust it and you will be perfect.
Posted by: Photoman | October 23, 2012 at 03:15 PM
Sorry LMF, not sure on all the correct jargon, actually started to type "readers" but since many of us also contribute reviews and other information beyond just responses from time to time, I almost feel like we're in essence, part-time bloggers ourselves. Anyway, some folks adding their pics to that equation, certainly would fit right into the spirit of this site so not sure why anybody would find that to be problematic.
And back at ya, kcmom. Been a fan since the mid-90s but believe it or not, this is my first time seeing Mr.Snider live and am really looking forward to it.
Posted by: pellboy | October 23, 2012 at 03:19 PM
Thanks for everyones input on the camera policy at the Midland! I have a small Panasonic Lumix, however I recently bought a larger model. I'll leave the larger one at home.

What did you think of the show, pellboy?
Posted by: kcmom | October 24, 2012 at 12:17 PM
kcmom, I was there last night. I thought Todd Snider put on a fantastic show, very entertaining. Huge crowd for a 'school night' and great weather for an outside show this late in the season!
Too bad Geordan couldn't make it. I will not attempt to write a review, it would be way too lame compared to the reviews he has been posting!
P.S. I did buy the download of the show so I will have a copy when it is available on his website.
Posted by: onthemark | October 24, 2012 at 04:03 PM
""it would be way too lame compared to the""
aw come on otm,
dont say that...
dont be so hard on yourself,
leave some of that fun for us say.

We loved Todd's show as well and how fortunate to be able to have it outdoors this time of year--if it had been inside it would have been a sell-out for sure!
Posted by: kcmom | October 24, 2012 at 04:29 PM
Aw shucks, OTM! You're too kind. Wish I could have been there at Todd Snider, as hanging out with you and Pellboy is always fun. It's also cool that they had it outdoors! I was just cracking up yesterday watching a YouTube video of Todd performing his song, "Talkin' Seattle Grunge Rock Blues." In the video, he's playing in front of what appears to be stained-glass. Anyway, as I stated somewhere else, I am going to see some shows in November, when I can finally get a day or two off. In fact, I am off for a week in the middle of the month and during that week, as I am not going out of town, I am plotting to possibly see four shows in four nights, but am unsure if I will actually follow through. But as my addiction to live music needs to be fed, we'll see....
During that week, I am definitely going to see The Wallflowers on a Thursday night (I'm getting into their new CD) and Springsteen on Saturday. The two tentative shows would be Aerosmith/Cheap Trick on Wednesday and The Supersuckers at the Riot room on that Friday. I have scoffed at Aerosmith and think that they (and Madonna, whom I never liked) crap on their fans when they charge such ridiculous prices for premium tickets. But a friend has a cheap seat in the heavens that he needs to unload and figured that if the show didn't sell that well, they may upgrade us to better seats, which has happened to me at the Sprint Center a few times.
I do like both Aerosmith and Cheap Trick (I had a ticket to that aborted Aerosmith/ZZ Top shows a few years back), but think this show could either be better than I thought it would be, or a complete disaster. Either way, It might be interesting. Still unsure about it. The Supersuckers, on the other hand, kick much ass live and will tear the Riot Room up! I've seen them a few times and they are the self-proclaimed "Best Band in Rock & Roll." It's an arrogant boast (made tongue-in-cheek), but if you catch 'em on a good night, there is a bit of truth to it. They've been around forever and despite a revolving door of members, Bassist/vocalist Eddie Spaghetti always brings the goods. So.....there will surely be a few more write-ups forthcoming.
Posted by: Geordan | October 25, 2012 at 10:51 AM
Huh, didn't even know about that Supersuckers show, I wouldn't mind seeing that. Definitely might see you at that Wallflowers show though, Geordan, $25 for GA tix puts that right in my thrifty wheelhouse. Really enjoyed their recent performance on Live @ The Artists Den, that kind of sold me on going.
As for Todd Snider, thanks for asking mom as I thought it was a wonderful show...great weather, a large, enthusiastic crowd, Amanda Shires helping out and he topped off a great setlist with one of my all-time favorite songs, Mr.Bojangles for an encore...I couldn't have been more satisfied. And good seeing you again, otm.

I guess I'm just old fashioned. I don't think that Tim is a blogger. I think he is a writer. That's a job that people get when they're good at something, work at something, and likely studied and trained at it. It earns them a living. Photography is the same way. Now, however, it seems the only way a writer or photographer can make money is by forcing you to watch ads associated with their content that they must give away for free. I guess that's how the world works now, but I don't have to enjoy it.
Posted by: Sid Much Rock | October 25, 2012 at 12:02 PM
Well stated Sid. However, the banner on top of this page clearly states 'Back To Rockville, the music blog of The Kansas City Star'. So while I agree there is no dispute that Tim (and many contributing reviewers) are all fine writers, in this format I would consider Tim to be a blogger while the rest of us are commenters.
I know I am happy to read just about every article posted and enjoy most of the comments that follow!

Your're all a bunch of blucking foggers.
Posted by: Flogger | October 25, 2012 at 12:55 PM
I'm so bummed I missed this show. Especially with all the regular commenters in the house. I had the ticket in my hand, but a flight back to KC was delayed. Todd is always great. I think the last time he played at Knucklehead's, it was inside and sold out. Thanks to all for the comments about the show. Sounds like everyone had a great time.
Posted by: Musicgal | October 25, 2012 at 02:15 PM
Sorry you had to miss it. Yes, the last time he played there it did sell out. That was seven years ago (he commented on it and apologized for taking so long to return). I remember that because I was planning to go, but the show sold out before I could get tickets!
Posted by: kcmom | October 25, 2012 at 02:52 PM
